Mill Creek Motocross Park Miller Wheels to Mill Creek Win By MATTHEW HOLT PELL Cm', AL, OCT. 26 Despite the fact that it rained several inches during the week, a huge amount of work was done to get the track into great shape for round 20 of the Alabama Championship Series. The racers held up their end of the deal and showed up in large numbers. Mill Creek went with their two·track setup and ran the smaller bikes on the smaller, lower track, but that didn't seem to bother the racers. In the 125cc Four-Stroke Little Wheel class, 19 riders lined up on the gate. This class is giving kids the chance to get started in racing without having to go out and get a motocross bike. In mota one, Tyson Miller got out front and motored his way to the checkered flag first, followed by Zack Hays in second and Niki Smith in third. These kids gave it their all throughout all of the obstacles, especially the whoops, which were more than big enough to swallow the little bikes whole. Mota two was more of the same for Miller, as he pulled out another moto victory for the overall. Hays stayed in there for second, and Smith rounded out the podium in third. Another class that was great to watch was the 125cc D class. These kids work hard week after week, getting better and better, trying to work their way up the ranks and become the next big Pro superstars. This week, Yamaha rider Jacob Richardson pulled a holeshot and led for several laps. Suzuki jockey Matt Thornburg had different plans, though; Thornburg stayed close for the first and second laps until he could make a move, and then he passed Richardson in a tum. Thornburg held on for the win, followed by Richardson in second and Willie Simmons in third. Mota two started the same way - with Richardson out front, followed by Simmons and Thornburg. It looked as though Richardson was going to get a win, but with one lap to go he let the bike get away from him. With the slippery conditions taking a toil, Thornburg capitalized and took the win, in front of Ryan Helsley and Simmons. The overall went to Thornburg with 1- 1 finishes, second went to Simmons with consistent 3-3 finishes, and Helsley was third with 5-2 finishes. Results 50 SHAFT: 1. Tylr:r Allen (Yam); 2. Carlsbad Raceway Bacon Sizzles at SRA GP By DAVE DAIN CARLSBAD, CA, OCT. 27 The SRA gang made their final visit of the year to the legendary Carlsbad Raceway. With the new watering system on the upper track, the dust that plagued riders in the past was nonexistent. Lee Bacon topped the field of 20 to take the overall honors in the Over 40 Expert division. Brad Oxley got the jump on the field and led the pack down the long start straight. Honda-mounted Craig Adams followed in second, with Bacon, Larry Gross and Jim Harris rounding out the top five. With the track being run backward, the field quickly sprinted toward the drag strip. CRF -mounted Oxley maintained his lead as the field thundered down the drag strip. Bacon was the first rider to come off the motocross track, with about five seconds to spare. Adams maintllined second. Bob Maxwell came from outside the top five to settle .into third and was closing on Adams. Maxwell worked his way around Adams before the end of the lap to claim second, dropping Adams to third. Former leader Oxley dropped to fourth. The top four remained the same for several laps. Bacon continued to pull away in what has been arguably the most competitive class of the year. Maxwell enjoyed an equally comfortable lead in second. Adams was third but was being reeled in by Oxley, who was receiving pressure from Tom Knapp, who worked his way around Oxley for fourth and kept Adams in sight but could not close the gap. With two laps to go, Bacon still retained the lead. Maxwell remained in second but had closed the 10-second gap to five. Adams, in third, seemed to catch a second wind and was closing in on Maxwell. Knapp remained in fourth. Chip Howell came from a midpack start to settle into fifth. With Bacon taking the white flag, the battle for second was heating up. Maxwell heid a slim margin over Adams as the two approached the whoop section just before the finish line. Maxwell stayed to the inside while Adams blitzed the whoops on the What's happening~ Cycle News Calendar. \~ Texas Regional MX .,.',\ December 1 2002 .;;;~\; :. ' :,-:;,:. ,..
