MXWest Nevada State Championship Series Round 12: Fernley International Raceway Jarret Returns in Fernley By worked temporarily, but by the midway point Jarret had found Hazel's rear fender. Hazel fought hard to hold Jarret to second, but Jarret eventually found the momentum to gain the lead. Hazel didn't give up, but it wasn't long before trouble sidelined his effort; he would eventually score 15th in the second moto for ninth overall in the 17-rider field. Honda-mounted Clint Martin filled the second spot left vacant by Hazel in the second moto to score a solid second overall through a 4-2 score. In Pro action, Yamaha's Jimmy Nelson brought out his YZ250 to top the 250cc Pro class via a 1- 1 posting. He was followed by the Jeff's Cycle Shack-backed CRF450R oITy Carson, who tallied a 2-2 effort, while Works Racing's Nick Baugh scored third aboard his Kawasaki with a 3-3. In the 125cc Pro division, this time it was Carson who snagged the top spot through a 1-1 tally aboard his KTM 125. Tommy Jean borrowed his sister's YZ250F to score second via a 2~2 score, while Matt Buyten grabbed third with a 4-3 tally on his RM 125. With all but the final round now recorded, the series is ready to conclude in seven days in Fernley. And speaking of Fernley, it has become the largest draw in the series with each round it hosts, as the sand circuit seems to be a favorite of many. It's therefore fitting that the whole deal will conclude there. amid the roughness of the popular course. Expect another sizable crowd to say goodbye to Fernley for the winter as the MXWest Nevada State Championship wraps up in one week. ROBERT BEAUPRE FERNLEY,NV.NOV.3 It's becoming the time of year in northern Nevada when riding motocross is increasingly associated with a number of woes: bikes that refuse to start; watered tracks that turn to ice~skating rinks; fingers that become frozen in the shape of a grip; and, of course, the lure of a warm bed on early Sunday morning, instead of the cold, windy terrain of a motocross course. Despite all this, the turnout of racers in Fernley, Nevada. for the 12th round of the MXWest Nevada State Championship Series could've led one to believe it was May instead of November. It seemed that the chance to wring out the machines another time or two before the snow flies was an opportunity that many couldn't resist. Big Valley Honda's Nick Jarret was one racer who refused to stay away, likely the result of the fact that shoulder problems in the late summer had temporarily sidelined his racing. However, it didn't seem as though the break had slowed him, as he convincingly claimed the wins in both the 125cc and 250cc Intermediate classes with all four moto wins. In both classes, Jarret had to fight off the advances of Yamaha-mounted Jimmy Hazel, who ended the day in the second spot in the 250s via a 2-2 score but threw away what likely may have been at least as good a result in the 125s after giving Jarret his biggest challenge of the day in the second moto. After taking second in the first 125cc moto, Hazel grabbed a clean holeshot in the second mota, with Jarret a couple of spots back. It seemed that Hazel, realizing that Jarret would move up. attempted to stretch out a lead that would allow him a little breathing room when Jarret reached second. AMA Mid-South Championship Winter Hare Scrambles Series Round 3: Willow' Creek Outpost and Campground Allen Wraps Up Another One By DEBBIE ALLEN LINTON, KY, NOV. 3 The Mid-South Championship riders made their way north as the third round whipped into high gear in Linton, Kentucky. Friendly weather greeted them at the Willow Creek Outpost and Campground, which was a refreshing spot for the 566 riders to break in some new trail. Everyone appreciated the efforts of the land owners, Daniel Hale and Mike Shelton, whose facility was a great place to hold a hare scrambles. P.A. Allen, riding his Team Green KX250, harnessed another overall finish in the AMA/Pirelli Tire/Parts Unlimited/White Brothers~sponsored series. "I had a decent race going today: Allen said afterward. "I was second off the start and swapped back and forth several times with my good buddies. A few mistakes here and there pushed me to the front. I'm happy with the results, because it's always nice to win." Off the AA start, Charles Mullins got the holeshot. At 16. he was riding for the first time in AA competition. He made the holeshot turn like a Pro and entered the creek section one bikelength in front of Allen and Dustin Gibson, who were battling for second place. "Mullins was riding really, really fast," Allen remarked. "I could tell he was going to crash, and he did." Mullins went down hard; along with losing positions, he lost his bark~buster, too. He was going down a hill and hit a breaking bump and flew over the bars. and Allen, Jeff Cregg, Blair Bersano and Gibson got around him. At the end of the first lap, F&S Suzuki/Blow Racing Suspension/No Fearbacked Bersano picked up the pace and moved into first place, while Allen dropped back to second. They were tight from that point forward and pulled away from Gibson, Cregg and Mullins. Both Bersano and Allen continued their battle and were seconds apart at the score tent on each iap. They swapped places a few times. In a power~line section four miles from the finish, the Sarge's Cycles/Pro Action of Kentucky/GPR/IMS-supported Allen passed Bersano, pulled some distance and finished the race in first place. Meanwhile, Bersano was stuck at the side of the trail because something was wrong with his bike, and everyone passed him. "I didn't have a very good start," Bersano said, "but I just rode smart and kept plugging away. I let everyone else make mistakes and got out front. Then, about three miles from the finish, I ran out of gas. Next time, I'll make sure I stop for a squirt of gas. because I'd like to be a contender at this year's championship." Maxima/Twin Air/Cycra-backed Cregg made a comfortable move for third place, while Plessinger Cycles-supported Mullins fell into a ravine. They went back and forth
