Moose Northern California Championship Enduro Series Motul 036 B/C Championship Enduro Series Rounds 7/6: WFO Enduro (LettJ Brian Butler crosses a rising Mill Creek en route to the overall victory at the WFO Enduro, round seven of the Moose Northern California Championship Enduro Series. "I have to commend Matt on doing a good job by always giving us a complicated route sheet," Shift/IMS/ Renthalsponsored Butler said. "It makes us all have to think, socialize and interact - even though I was cursing his name when was programming my comSTORV AND PHOTOS BV puter. " The second test ran from the restart to the third check, and another test followed immediately between checks four and five. Set at 16 mph, test three was routed among thick groves of trees; in many places, handlebars wouldn't fit between the trunks without fancy maneuvering. Some downed trees and log crossings also made the first-and-second-gear-only test a tough one. JILL ASHWORTH PATTERSON FOOTS SPRINGS, CA, NOV. 10 ound seven of Moose's Northern ~ California Championship Enduro Series saw an end to Faultline Suspension's Brian Butler's search for the elusive victory, as he demonstrated that his precise racing rhythm is still intact by claiming the overall win at the WFO Enduro. The Valley Climbers Motorcycle Club's event, which was held at Fouts Springs, California, was also round six of Motul's District 36 B/C Championship Enduro Series. Intermittent rains during the three days preceding the race terminated the dry conditions and choking dust that had plagued the area since the spring. Early race morning, more heavy rains and gusty winds began. The less-hardy entrants loaded their bikes back up and decided not to ride in the stormy weather. For those series participants who did tackle the two-loop, 92-mile route laid out by VCMC's Matt Wallace, their determination paid off when the rain let up about an hour later and course conditions became nearly perfect. Loop one consisted of five checks and three tests and contained the more technical and challenging sections of the event. The first check, which was also the first test's check-in, was placed strategically and several riders burned it or were late. At the checkout, Butler and Billy Russell were the only two to make it on time and score a zero. Check two was also noted as an "end" (of the race), with a "restart" listed 3.9 miles later. The unusual designations caused quite a bit of confusion among the riders, both before and during the race. ~ 22 DECEMBER 4, 2002' cue "I know that creek crossing well and knew to take it careful," Cycle West/Moose/Suzuki-supported Jeff Bauer said. "There are many rocks hidden under that water." Scores at the break indicated that Butler was keeping the best pace, as his 4.060 was ahead of Russell's 5.044 and Wood's 5.061. Pascarella was next with 6.053, and Chris Young was also in the hunt with 7.060. Stowe and Bauer each had 7.075, and Glenn Martinson's 8.108 and Chris lito's 9.077 put them within striking distance. The second loop had two longer tests and six checks and was set at a faster tempo than loop one. Test four, at 12.4 miles long, consisted mostly of wooded single-track trails. Russell railed and scored a 0.10. Butler was on the gas and logged 0.28, Wood dropped 1.61, and Bauer put another 1.65 on his card. lito's 2.93 was the best of several scores in the twos. "The traction was so great, you couldn't not go fast!" Fox/Goat/ Torco-sponsored Russell said. "I told myself, 'Okay, this is going to be your test.'" Bauer held fourth with 8.146, and lito placed fifth with 11.178. "The traction was so awesome," AP Racing/Woodland Cabinet/Jim & Jim's of Sonoma-supported lito said. "This was the best race so far all year!" "I just rode and had lots of fun today!" Butler said. "This is my first win in a long time. I'm pumped!" (LettJ Billy Russell gases It through the second special test en route to third overall in Fouts Springs, California. (RIght) Six was the luckr number of the day; row-six starters (from left to right) Dave Wood, Jeff Bauer and Chris ZIto placed second. fourth and fifth overall, respectively. At the check-out, Butler, Wood and Tim Stowe had the low scores of three. Russell, Mike Pascarella and Ty Spooner each carded fours, and others dropped five or more points. "That tight tree section on Sullivan Ridge had a whole bunch of new stuff in it," Mach 1 MotoSports/Fox Racing/Braking-Motion Pro-backed Dave Wood said. "It was a blast!" From there, it was a long 21.2 miles to the next rest, where crossing the deep and rapidly flowing Mill Creek was difficult. Several riders took a plunge into the cold water and drowned out their bikes just before getting to the gas stop. • • n _ _ so Check eight was placed out of sight, just over a small rise. Several riders got there early, including Russell, Stowe, Pascarella and Young. The extra two points from the burn put some of them out of contention for a best-place finish. Only five riders were able to score zeroes at each of the final three checks, which determined the top five finishers for the day. Butler, being the only one with a full set of zeroes on loop two, easily captured the victory with a total of 4.103. Wood took second with 6.127, and Russell's quick test scores saved his burn and put him third with 7.54. B S/SR: 1. Hugo Zwetsloot (Hon); 2. Don Chose (KTM); 3. Jim Peecock (KTM); 4.
