AMA Texas/Oklahoma Pro Circuit Regional Fall Classic Series Final Round: Village Creek Motocross Park By Zeb Smith took top honors at the final round of the AMA Texas/Oklahoma Pro Circuit Fall Classic Series by winning the coveted Dunlop Silver Cup for the most points collected during all five rounds. CONNIE JOHNSON PHOTOS BY JOHNSON AND JOHN KISOR FORT WORTH, TX, NOV. 2·3 1f/eam Green/D&S Kawasaki/Pro U Circuit/MSR/Alpinestars-backed Zeb Smith of Mansfield, Texas, was named the Dunlop Silver Cup High Points Champion for the best points performance during the sixth annual AMA Texas/Oklahoma Pro Circuit Regional Fall Classic Series. Zeb is the younger brother of former rookie Pro rider Justin Smith, who was the very first recipient of the award, which was introduced into the series two years ago. Justin suffered a severe head injury at the San Diego round of the 2002 Supercross Series, which precipitated a worldwide prayer chain for his recovery and support. Justin has recovered fully over the past year but is not yet up to riding. Zeb collected the most points in the 65cc (7-9) class (128) and in the 65cc Open class (126) and then added points from a fifth-place overall in the series in the 85cc (7-11) class (86) and a fourth overall in the series in the 85cc Junior Open (9-11) class (93) to top the charts with the highest collection of points overall for the prestigious and much-desired award. Not one rider among the thousands who participated in this year's series aced every round. Three riders came close, taking the overall win in four of the five rounds and placing second overall in the round they didn't win: 85cc (7-11) Beginner Austin Collins of Moore, Oklahoma; 85cc (14-16) rider Michael Kasberg of Birome, Texas; and 250cc Beginner Arthur Fonseca of San Antonio, Texas, all finished with 155 points out of a possible 160. Luke It was nothing short of a miracle that Village Creek Motocross Park was able to pull off the final round of the series when Mother Nature did her best to cancel the event. Promoter Terry Cordray, however, pulled out all the stops, and the rains took a break on Saturday, allowing the minibikes', Beginners' and Women's classes to convene and enjoy the day. Showers all Saturday night saw riders balking at the idea of racing, but a simple two- hour delay and the cutting out of the worst areas of the track allowed the event to take place. North Texas had been hammered with heavy rains off and on for two weeks prior to the event, so a big tip of the helmet goes to Mr. Cordray and his staff. On Saturday, Zach Henry got the holeshot in moto one of the 51 cc Open (4-8) Stock class, with KTM rider Caleb Dowell right on his heels. Dowell got by Henry before the end of lap one and led him to the checkered flag. Austin Cox held on to third on his Cobra, while Klay Stephenson succumbed to the pressure from Luke Tankersley. Dowell got the jump off the gate in moto two and led Henry and Cox to the checkers once again. Getting a better start was Zachary Rambin, who put his Cobra into the fourth-place finishing position, in front of Stephenson. Landon Salyer dominated the 85cc D (7-11) class on his Yamaha. Salyer led every lap of both motos while Austin Collins and Drew Brannon, both on Hondas, followed in second and third. The only shake-up in the race was between Kawasaki jockey Shane Samas and Suzuki-mounted Mason Guin. Samas held on to fourth in moto one, with Guin finishing in sixth, behind charging Yamaha rider Dillon Fowler, who made the pass for fifth on the last lap. Guin, however, got around Samas on the second lap in moto two and held him off until the checkers came out. Samas hung on to fifth, in front of Fowler. Another great series is in the books, and everyone's ready to celebrate the holidays and contemplate the next season. eN (Left) Caleb Dowell swept the 51 cc Stock (7-8) and !lice Open classes at Village Creek Motocross Park.
