Hiner moved into striking position behind James as they headed into the back section of the track, where Hiner took the lead with a leap of faith over the tabletop, while giving a look over at James. Hiner and James finished one and two, with Klein third, Penhall holding on to fourth, and Curtis Malins coming up through the pack to finish in fifth. Ryan Corum took the lead from James in mota two with a fistful of throttle and an outside line, bumping James to second. Malins got a better start in third, behind Corum and James, with Penhall, Hiner and Brett Moscrop at his rear fender to make up the early top five. James went on to take the overall after Corum was docked a lap for repeatedly completing a double jump on a yellow flag, which was flying for the fallen Tyson Talkington, who took a nasty spill early on. James gave chase in second, and Hiner moved into third, but they were bumped up to first and second, thanks to Corum. MaJins did an outstanding job of holding on for third overall with his 5-3 score, while Penhall picked up another fourth and Brandon Bosworth sneaked into fifth overall with his 7- 10 scorecard. Moscrop dropped the front end in a turn and worked his way back to fifth after losing nearly six positions. Perris Raceway Perris, California Results: October 27, 2002 (Round Pool (Pol). 60 BEG: I. Action Sports Team Hare Scrambles Championship of the World Linscott's Farm Shea lIE Plessinger on Top of the World By DAVID L. PATTON JR. ALBANY, OH, OCT. 27 Nearly 200 teams started the 19th annual Actioo Sports Team Hare Scrambles Championship of the World - sponsored by Budweiser, Don Wood Automotive and Damon's - for three hours of slippery, muddy racing. First to the checkered flag was the Plessinger Cycles duo of Scott Plessinger and Andy Shea, who ran away from the competition to record their second team victory. The 1994 winners, Gene O'Naii and Gary Roach, finished second, ahead of Shawn Sommers and Doug Rinehart. The Pro class was the first wave to challenge the 7 -mile course. The event features a dead-engine, Grand Prix· style start that has one rider from each team sprinting uphill to his bike, firing it up and getting under way. O'Naii outran the competition and fired off the line first on the Pro Action/Moose Racing/DP Brakes Kawasaki. Shea led the rest of the field as they tried to reel in O'Nail. After having raced in the morning program with his son Cory, O'Naii was flying out front. "Knowing the course helped me out a lot," O'Naii admitted. "Doug and Andy have been riding all year, and they are faster than me, but I guess we are the underdogs, so we'll see how we do: Former Hare Scrambles National Champion Doug Blackwell was late off the line, but he had the R&R Motor City/Ohlins/Smith-backed Honda CRF450R wide open, and he passed Shea after a quarter-lap. I "I got in the woods and started crashing." Shea recounted. 'The roots are polished and slick, and you have to watch what you're doing." By the time the riders made it to the RC Scoring barrels, though, Blackwell was out front, with Shea in second, ahead of O'Nail. "I got by Andy," Blackwell said. "Then I caught Gene on a downhill. I was kind of floundering around a little and bumped Gene when I tried to go by, and he got hung up on the next uphill.' With a clear course, Blackwell put his head down and reeled off the day's fastest lap, an 18-minute-and-16-second blast, before handing off to teammate Bryan Caltrider. An Ohlins Suspension technician/engineer from Belgium, Caltrider was contesting his first race in the United States. "I told Scott and the guys that Gary is [goingl to try to psyche them out, but I haven't seen him ride yet," Blackwell admitted in the pits. Caltrider was riding all out on his first lap when djsaster struck. He clipped a small tree that kicked him head on into a big tree, and the team lost about two laps before he could nurse the bent Honda back to the pits. "Ohio has a lot of trees: Caltrider observed. "I've never ridden in forest like this, and there is one less tree out there now." Shea had also switched on the second lap, and Plessinger was on the course, but he wasn't happy. "We are sharing Andy's 250, and it was beating me to death," said Plessinger, who Linscott's Farm: Andy Shea was the fastest rider of the day at the Action Sports Team Hare Scrambles Championship of the World in Albany. Ohio. He and teammate Scott Plessinger won the Pro class_ Sunset Ridge MX held the lead until the end of the lap. "I ran out of gas on an uphill and had to coast back down to get it started again.' Plessinger also lost time when he pulled off course to let the Action Sports crew know there was a rider injured on the course. Roach, on the Sport Cycles RaCing/In-Town Body Shop/GMR Yamaha, took advantage and moved back out front, then he handed off to O'Nail, who then tried to stretch out his lead, despite battling a rear-brake problem. "The rear brake started boiling over in the morning, and I've bled it since, but I can't get it to hold up," said O'Nail, who held off the MSR-backed Shea for most of the lap. Then Shea passed him before the barrels. "I caught him in the back, and I could see he was having problems with his hands and arm pump, so he let me by," said Shea. The two front-runners bracketed a lapped rider in the barrels; the lapper cut off O'Naii coming out of the barrels and they fell, while Shea jetted away. Plessinger swapped rear tires on the KTr:I 125 SX backup bike, and when Shea came in with a 45-second lead, Plessinger put together his two fastest laps to widen the gap. O'Naii handed off to Roach, but Roach wasn't able to come to grips with the slippery course. "I just couldn't keep it on two wheels today," Roach admitted. "I fell six times and just couldn't get it going for us.' When the white flag came out. both teams switched. and Shea set out to finish what he'd started. He ran a 19: 18 to seal the win. "The course was great at the end there, and it's great to win it again." he said. O'Naii thought about catching Shea, but he crashed and decided to smooth out and settle for second. "I won my first Team Hare Scrambles Championship in 1986 with Kevin Brown, my second in 1994 with Gary, and we got second today," O'Naii said. "That's what's so great about our sport: You can race with your friends as you get older." Sommers and Rinehart could nevj!r overcome first-lap problems, but they never qUit and ended the day in third overall. Tarara Takes Two By NIKKI DORANCZYK WALNUT, IL, OCT. 12 Sunset Ridge, one of the newest tracks in District 17, has no problem packing the pits for both practice and race days. Riders look for· ward to turning laps and throwing roost on the wide and sandy dirt mix of Sunset Ridge, laid out on rolling hills. Track owner Bob Pistole and his family know how to put on a great race. Bob and his sons Josh and Chad even line up in the gate on occasion and get in on the racing action. Adam Tarara was flawless on the overcast, misty day. Tarara raced his Tuf Kawasakis to victory in 65cc and 85 Junior racing, but not without a fight from Drew Yenerich. In the first 65cc mota, Yenerich was out front over the first tabletop, followed by Steven Page. Tarara moved around Page and reeled in Yenerich. By the third lap, Tarara passed into first and took the moto win. Yenerich piloted his Subway Suzuki to the second-mota holeshot, but Tarara quickly took the lead and pulled away for the overall, with Yenerich and Page rounding out the top three. Tarara also aced both 85cc Junior motos. with Yenerich and Ty Stead finishing second and third. ,-----------------'" ~ ~ :::> c i1 Z > '" '" ~ :z: Q. linscott's Farm Albany, Ohio Results: October 27,2002 PRO: I.
