California Racing Club Sponsorship Series Round 1: Los Angeles County Raceway STORY AND PHOTOS BY GREG ROBERTSON PALMDALE,CA,OCT.20 Ia\ rmando Aguilar kicked off the ® opening round of the 14th annual California Racing Club/Galpin Ford/Pro Circuit/Sinisalo/N-Stylesponsored Sponsorship Series with overall wins in both the 65cc (9-11) and 85cc (7-11) classes. The Thousand Oaks Yamaha/Factory Effects/ Spy /H RP/Ha nsen' s/Wiseco- backed Aguilar split moto wins with Sammy Ortii on the J.B. Memorial Track in the 65cc class and did the same with Chandler Quimette in the 85cc races. Ortiz opened things up with a wireto-wire romp in the first 65cc (9-11) race, aboard his KX65. Aguilar kept Ortiz honest throughout the moto but would have to settle for second place. Kyle Smith gated in third, and that's right where he would finish, ahead of Tucker Hicks and Cody Eastman. Moto two started as a duplicate of the first, with Ortiz grabbing the early lead over Aguilar and Smith. Aguilar hounded Ortiz for a little over half the moto before being able to make the pass. Aguilar kept his KTM out front for the remaining laps to sew up the overall win. Smith also found a way around Ortiz prior to the checkers, but Ortiz's 1-3 rides earned him the second-place trophy, over Smith. YZ85-mounted Quimette controlled the first 85cc (7 -11) moto right from the drop of the gate. Keith Robinson held down second for a couple of laps until a fall dropped him to an eventual sixth-place finish. Quimette continued on for the win, with Aguilar coming from out of the pack to take second, ahead of Tyler Sjoberg, Smith and Chelsea Candido. Aguilar got a much better start in moto two and led every lap on his Yamaha for his second class win of the day. Sjoberg finished second in the moto to edge out the 1-4 score of Quimette for second overall. Consistency paid off for 250cc Intermediate rider Justin Reese, as he went 3-2 for the win. Kyle Jones charged from midpack to collect the first-moto victory, followed by Neil Chisholm and Reese. Steve Colson had a couple of problems in moto one and finished fifth, but he made up for it by dominating the second moto right from the drop of the gate. Reese got around Tim Laster with time running out to earn the first-place tro- 26 NOVEMBER 20. 2002' cue phy. Second went to Jones on a 1-4 score, followed by Colson (5-1) and Laster (4-3). It was no contest in the Women's class, as Sherri Cruse absolutely dominated both motos. The Y-B-Normal/Reese Racing/O'Neal-sponsored Cruse won the opening moto by a huge margin and then displaced a fast-starting Candido to do the same in round two. Candido easily finished second both times out, ahead of Alyssa Prince, Shelly Imke and Kendall Clements. David Medina overcame a 10thplace start to get to the checkers first in the first 85cc Beginner Division One moto. Jeremy Fraijo and Kalani Walsh each took turns running out front until Medina took over on the penultimate lap. Walsh got another good start in moto two, but so did Medina, and he was around Walsh by lap two and pulling away for a sweep of the field. Walsh went 3-2 for second overall, followed by the consistent 4-4 score of Randy Merrill and the 2-6 tally of Fraijo. Ricky Parks opened up the series with a strong 1-1 showing in the Schoolboy class. Parks led every lap of both races on his Maxima/Scott/ Axo/Renthal-sponsored YZ125, leaving everyone else to fight over second place. A good start in moto one helped Darin Chisholm take home the second-place trophy on 2-4 rides. Derreck Murphy used a 5-2 performance to edge out the 4-3 finishes of Colby Dawson for third overall. Speaking of good starts, Josh Jackson didn't let his pair of good starts go to waste, as he went 1-1 in the 125cc Beginner Division Two class. Steve Simpson went 3-3, with Rocky Maida (4-4) and Max Herter (7 -5) rounding out the top five. Chad Abbott was running away with the first 125cc Beginner Division One moto until problems developed, and he was forced out of the race. A.J. Wilson had been steadily climbing up from a midpack start, and he inherited the top spot and the opening-moto win. Abbott returned with a vengeance to spank everyone in moto two. Wilson's second-place finish gave him the overall, topping the 2-3 tally of Mike Hearns and the 4-4 score of Charles Price.
