AMA California State Championships Glen Helen Raceway Park clinch a tie, with the final moto being the tie breaker for points. While other riders faced this same situation on Saturday night, Weekley was the only one to succeed. He did take both wins on day two and did use the tie breaker to gain the championship. eN STORY AND PHOTOS BY JOHN BETHEA SAN BERNARDINO, CA, OCT. 12·13 hey came with sharpened elbows and their race faces on. More than 400 riders converged on Glen Helen Raceway Park for the AMAsanctioned California State Championships, and most of them threw caution aside, resulting in two days of some incredible racing, with four motos per class. The poster boy for the event's multitude of hard-luck stories had to be Kevin Frisbie, with his 250cc Novice woes. In the final moto of Saturday's program, he was pushing his FMF/CPR Yamaha to its limits in the lead against an equally charged-up B.J. Burns, on a Nomadik/JBC Yamaha, for nearly the entire race. As they approached the final few turns before the white flag, the finishline flagger reached for the banner and began to hoist the checkered flag in error. Frisbie hit the final turns determined to ace the event, passed the waving flag and heaved a sigh of relief as he coasted to a stop at the base of the jump, expecting to turn and congratulate Burns for a race well run. Instead, to his horror, Burns sped past under full throttle. Spurred by a few screams and yells from the sidelines, Frisbie got on the throttle, angered at the situation and angry at the world. What he had failed to see earlier was the flagger spotting her error instantly and correctly replacing it with the white flag before the two had reached the finish line. It was late in the afternoon, when the shadows were long, and all the bright colors of the day were turning to shades of gray, but all Frisbie could see was red as he and Burns Glen Helen RlcewIY Park Sin Bemlnlino, C.elifomil Resufts:October12-13,2D02 came to the bottom of the steep downhill. He was catching Burns, but time was running out. Proving haste makes waste, Frisbie lost control, spitting himself head-first over the handlebars. Luckily, the cartwheeling bike missed him, and he was able to walk away - but he was unable to race day two. It wasn't the only woe Frisbie had experienced that day. In the first 125cc Novice moto, in another of those great races that dominated the weekend, Austin Prescott got his Chaparral Suzuki to the holeshot, with Frisbie hot on his tail. Before they finished the first tour, Frisbie had his Thor Yamaha in first, with Aaron Gwin, on the RG3/Motul Kawasaki, closing in. Gwin took over on lap two, and the pair attacked the course for the next three laps. Meanwhile, SMP/Varner Yamaha Racing's Michael Parker was inching his way up to prod them. When Frisbie had a last-lap bobble in the whoops, Parker passed him two turns from the end for second, behind Gwin. In the second round, Gwin led the field through the first turns, only to be passed by Parker on the downhill. Late in the race, when Gwin crashed four turns from the finish, Mid Cities Donnie Webber won seven of his eight motos and scored both the 125cc and 250cc Intennediate championships In San Bernardino, California. 50 SHAFT: I. Honda rider Brett Klein and Burns attempted to take up the slack in the race for second. But in his haste to get around Gwin, Klein was forced off the track. He paralleled it for a short bit and then jumped back on - still side by side with Burns. Klein passed Burns in the next tum. It was all done right in front of Glen Helen's race officials, who later penalized Klein one position, giving Burns second instead of third. Frisbie's fifth was his last full race of the weekend. Parker, using the momentum he had displayed on Saturday, came back on Sunday and won overall, even though Gwin fought him in both outings. The top Amateur racer of the weekend was Donnie Webber, who seemed to be coming from behind in nearly every moto on his Smith Suzuki, winning seven of the eight motos and taking both the 125cc and 250cc Intermediate championships. Even he had his problems, taking sixth in Saturday's second 125 race - the only blemish on his perfect score. Other double-class champions included Matt Tedder, in the Vet Experts and Senior Experts; Bernard Unhassobiscay, in the Vet Novices and Senior Novices; Robert Memoli, in the Supermini and 80cc (14-16) classes; Jeremy McCool, in the 50cc (7-9) Stock and Modified classes; Donald Ertel, in the Four-Stroke Beginners and 250cc Beginners; Gunnar Biggerstaff, in the 50cc (4-6) Stock and Modified classes; and Trent Pugmire, in the 60cc (9-11) and 80cc (4-11) classes. The best back-to-the-wall comeback came from Martin Weekley, who finished second to Eric Warrington in the Junior Vet Novice class in both rounds on Saturday, which meant he had to win both races on Sunday to cue' e n e _ OS NOVEMBER 20, 2002 25
