Series and took convincing overall wins in both the 250cc and Over 30 classes. Mason's main competition was in the 250cc class, as his third in the first moto, combined with his second-moto win, was enough to take the overall win and the points lead in the 250cc class. Zach Wray ended the day with runner-up honors, and a steady ride by Brian Schackel on a borrowed Honda was good for third. The Senior Over 30 class was all Mason's. He won both motos, with Jeff Pfaller second and Darren Minnick third. The action was for fourth place, as Darrel Ackers and Eric Fernandez swapped positions three or four times each moto, with Fernandez winning the battle for fourth overall. 250 0·1: 1. By GREG ROBERTSON Hacker's 5-2 mota scores garnered second overall, Hudgins went 4-3 for third overall, and KTM rider Brandy Price finished fourth. The 125cc class belonged to J.D. Snedger, who posted two moto wins. Ross Ollberding held off Justin Rose in the second moto for second and second overall, with Rose finishing third overall. Todd Eads came through the pack for fourth. In the 200cc class, John Eynon was able to pull off his first overall win of the season, which made his co-sponsor Beechmont Motosports very happy. Eynon held off Nate Canaan to the checkered flag and, along with a runner-up finish in the first moto, it was good for the overall. Chris Johnston watched the race in front of him and finished third overall. PALMDALE, CA, OCT. 13 Tucker Hicks split moto wins with Kameron Robinson to top the 85cc Beginner class at Los Angeles County Raceway during CaUfor· nja Racing Club's Sunday motocross action. In the first moto, Robinson grabbed the early lead, ahead of Tyson Antillion, Daniel Perry, Andy Babbitt and the rest of the field. Hicks gated about midpack, but by the end of lap two he was up into third, behind Robinson and Antillion. The top three positions would remain unchanged up until the checkers, with Robinson taking the win a few seconds ahead of Antillion; Hicks was an equal distance back in third. Babbitt hung in there for fourth, ahead of Perry and Michael Vanderlip. Robinson was off to another good start in moto two, leading Hicks and Babbitt. Robinson appeared to be well on his way to a sweep of the class when problems arose on the sixth circuit, and he was out of the rac'e. Hicks, who had kept his Red Head Clothing/Demarinibacked Kawasaki within striking distance, was suddenly handed the lead, and with it the overall honors on a 3-1 score. Babbitt's second-place finish eamed him the second-place trophy. Perry slowly worked his way up Into a third-place finish for third overall, with Antillion rebounding from a first-lap fall to go 2-7 for fourth overall_ KTM-mounted Shane Emerson was pretty much untouchable in both the Super Pee Wee (7-9) and 65cc Beginner classes, leaving everyone else to fight over second place_ Shane Miller went 2-2 for runner· up honors in the Pee Wee ranks, over the 3-3 tally of Dillon Rowsell and the 4-5 score of Joey Holt. Junior Delgado's 4-2 score edged out the 2-4 tally of Tomas Hemandez for the second-place brass in the 65cc field. Kyie Smith, on his Simi Cycle/Smith/Maxima-sponsored KTM, went wire to wire for the 65cc (9-11) first·moto win, ahead of Sammy Ortiz and Chris Carrillo. Ortiz led the first half of moto two until a fall dropped him to an eventual fourth-place finish. Smith easily dominated the remaining laps for a sweep of the class. Antillion went 4-2 to top the 2-4 score of Ortiz for second overalL Results P/W YAM. BEG: I. Matthew WoIdman (Yom): 2. Michael Stanford (S",). P/W YAM. ADV: I. Nicholas MercIer (Yam): 2. Vincenzo's Pizzeria RJ Gives Awards at SoCal MX Banquet By MARK KARIYA NEWHALL, CA, OCT. 17 Any racer from the newest Beginner to the most seasoned Pro looks up to champions with respect; getting to hang out with them is a bonus. So when seven-time AMA National and supercross champ Rick Johnson dropped in at the AMA Southern C.lifornia Motocross Championship Series awards banquet at Vincenzo's Pizzeria, the overflow crowd responded predictably. "RJ" accommodated plenty of autograph and photo requests throughout the evening and also acted as the guest awards presenter. The fourth annual eight-race summer series - sponsored primarily by Toyota, Gearhead and Scott's Performance - is put on by District 37 clubs that are often better known for the off-road races they put on. Since there's a marked decrease in activity (especially in the desert) during the summer, the series gives those clubs (Dirt Diggers, Lost Coyotes, Prairie Dogs, RUTS, Rovers, Shamrocks, VCMC and Viewfinders) an opportunity to both do something a little different and keep busy. While everyone seemed to appreciate Johnson's handing out the trophies and number-one plates to the various class winners, few expressed jealousy for his schedule. Immediately after the banquet, he and fellow teacher/partner Mercedes Gonzalez planned to make the drive to Utah in order to conduct a rescheduled class for his Rick Johnson School of Champions MX school. (Fortunately, he'd persuaded a neighbor to do the driving.) Results 65 BEG: 1. Tanner SIsson: 2. Tyler Cobral; 3. Alex laughlin. 65 (4-8): I. Colton SaI'ldel'5. 65 (9-11): 1. Chris Bell: 2.
