posed of two riders before the triple in the
back and got another rider after the last dou·
ble on that same straight. Renner was in third
and charging to the front. Renner passed
Crespi in the front supercross portion of the
treck. Maynard was the only one in front of
him. Renner turned the throttle even more and
caught Maynard in the back section. Renner
slipped to the inside before the triple and took
the lead away. Renner pulled out to keep Maynard from coming back with a challenge.
Crespi kept third, and Max Rash passed
Bobby Teisler on the last lap for fourth.
The Yamaha-mounted Renner must have
been fed up with playing second fiddle to Maynard on this day. Renner won the second mote
over Maynard. Chase Couture turned up the
wick to place third, ahead of a pack of riders.
Crespi took fourth, ahead of Jesse Freeman in
fifth.

AMI Mid-South Championship Winter Hare Scrambles Series
Round 2: North Alabama Trail Riders Association
Allen's
New Hope Victory
By
DEBBIE ALLEN
NEW HOPE, AL, OCT. 20
Team Green Kawasaki's P.A. Allen was at it
again during the second round of the MidSouth Championship Winter Hare Scrambles
Series. Soon after the AMA/Pirelli Tire/Moose/
Parts Unlimited/White Brothers-sponsored
series rot led into New Hope, Alabama, he
rolled into the lead on his new 2003 KX250
and claimed his second win of the season.
"I wasn't sure about riding my new bike,
because I had just gotten it about two days
ago," said Allen. "It's completely different
from last year's bike, but it's all for the better."
Allen got the holeshot and tried to push
hard to pull away but then crashed.
"I didn't lose the lead or anything," he said,
"but I decided to slow it down a bit, because
the course was real slick on the first lap. and I
didn't want to take a chance and get hurt."
On the AA start, there were 14 riders
breaking in the trail for the 474 A, Band C
riders who followed. Allen edged out a clear
path, with Mike McCrea battling at his side
and Dustin Gibson pushing them both from
the rear. They Jed the remaining riders on a
small grasstrack and then disappeared into
the woods.
Shortly thereafter, it became a push for the
lead between Sarge's Cycles/Pro Action of
Kentucky/GPR/Moose teammates Allen and
Gibson. They had a 20-second lead ahead of
Jeff Cregg by the end of the first lap, while
McCrea dropped back to fifth place. Gibson
rolled into the score tent just seconds behind
Allen on the first two laps.
"Dustin followed me for the first lap," said
Allen. "The second lap, I pulled away but hit
lappers, and he caught back up with me."
At the end of the second lap, Gibson took
the iead when Allen made his first gas stop.
Allen pushed for the lead once again and
regained it four miles later. Then he made the
fastest lap times during his last two laps and
won the race.
·Once I caught up to him, he crashed,"
Allen said. "I passed him, pulled away, and
kind of cruised on from there."
Riding his KTM 250 EXC, Cycra/Smith/
Performance Engineering-supported Gibson
came in second.
"My suspension was a little stiff because
I just got the bike Friday," Gibson reported.
-I thought the motor ran great, though, and I
really want to thank KTM for hooking me up.
I had a great day; I just couldn't catch P.A."
Bloomington Power Sports/Scott/Lidz by
Fid/ Acerbis/Captain Cregg-sponsored Jeff
Cregg was the fourth rider off of the AA start.
"I had a decent ride the whole time, but the
first three laps were kind of rough," Cregg
said, referring to a track that was slick and
mostly c1ear·cut, so 'there were a lot of tree
stubs that made it dangerous. "I couldn't get
in the groove but finally got to doing better
when [Chad) Froman caught up to me during
the third lap."
With Froman prOViding some incentive,
Cregg tumed it up and caught up to Gibson on
the fourth lap. They rode together for a while
until Gibson slowly pulled away from him
when they ran into some lappeTS. The Indiana
State Champion rode a fairly lonely race in
third place for all five laps and topped out the
podium in third place.
Super Bike Shop/Sprocket Specialistsbacked Ch8d Froman and Performance
Cycles' Gary Hendricks came in fourth and
fifth.
"I think I stayed in fifth and sixth place all
day, and I wound up in fourth," Froman said.
·1 heard Mike Sampson and Gary Hendricks
behind me, so that made me want to push to
stay in front of them. It was a great race, and
the promoters did a great job at laying out
the track."
In the 200cc A class, KTM proved to be
the bike of choice among the top five riders.
Chris Taylor was the leader of the KTM pack.
He was on a roll and took his second win of
the season. He finished the race in 19th over·
all and was a minute ahead of Castle Power
Sport's Derek Bratcher.
"I was running fourth and fifth for my first
two laps," Bratcher said. "I think other people
were haVing trouble. and I just got around
them."
He finished the race in second place.
Clay Hedgpath was one of those riders
having trouble. He jumped the creek and went
over the bars, dropping himself back to last
place. He slowly worked his way back and finished in third place.

own groove in fifth place. Walsh soared like an
eagle for first place, and Kelley flew well
enough to capture second place. Cutler
claimed third place, Alger slipped to fourth
place, and Sugg had fifth place in the bag.
As all the WNYMA competitors and staff
worked the track into shape for moto two,
the question became. Would Walsh's experi.
ence tell him to take it easy, and if so, who
was desperado enough to cash in on the
opportunity?
When the gate dropped, Walsh was
already gone, and the new kid in town ready
to challenge him this time around was Nick
Brant. Cutler was ready to take it to the limit.
looking for any way around Brant. Kelley, relishing life in the fast lane, passed Cutler and
then sent Brant home with a heartache
tonight. Walsh was once again soaring with
the lead, but Kelley appeared able to reel him
in at times. I can't tell you why, but Cutler
wrestled his Kawasaki into the thjrd slot, while
Alger moved his Honda into fourth place and
was looking to begin his own challenge. Kelley
repeatedly caught and then immediately lost
Walsh throughout the closing laps. Just as
predicted, the improved track conditions
made for great racing throughout the day. In
the long run, Walsh (1-1) left with a peaceful,
easy feeling after winning first overall, and
Kelley (2-2) was in tune for second overall.
Cutler (3-3) placed third overall, Alger (4-4)
was on his game for fourth overall, and Sugg
(5-5) was fifth overall.
The WNYMA family had a great season
By LARRY WOOSTER
BATAVIA, NY, OCT. 20
WNYMA's ninth round whipped more than
300 riders from New York, Pennsylvania and
Canada into a fever pitch for EVS Sports/
Support Plus Racing Day at Batavia Motocross
Park's last WNYMA points race of 2002. Mother Nature generously overwatered the Gene·
see County motocross facility, but the track
staff did an awesome job of grooming the
track. The old adage that ·a muddy practice
makes for perfect racing conditions" rang true
on this day.
A strong class of 250cc Open Novice riders were ready to battle it out on the 200 I
WNYMA Track of the Year. With the drop of
the gate, David Walsh and Gary Alger got the
jump on the rest of the riders as they sped bar
to bar from the starting line and out into the
holeshot comer. Christopher Kelley absolutely
hammered his way over the tops of the long
whoops section and quickly made the pass on
Alger. Walsh, aboard his yellow Suzuki mount,
got 8 better grip earlier than most riders on the
track. This was, after all, the perfect day to
actually use the new rear tires many riders
won over the long season. Andrew Cutler
joined the fray and made a strong challenge
on Kelley for second. Walsh used his 13 or so
years of motocross knowledge like a power
tool to handle this tough field of Novice riders.
Alger was feeling the pressure from Eli Sugg
for third all moto long, while Canada's favorite
motocross son, Len Dignard, was digging his
