Fourth Annual Toby Jorgensen Memorial Race Round 11: Hollister Hills &P Track Souza Steps Closer to Proto out this season; he has also ridden in the Eddie Mulder Vintage Dirt Track Series and the Del Mar Mile. Sunday's Open A contest was no iess exciting than Saturday's. Souza Racing's Tony Souza came out of tum one first and, riding flawlessly again, maintained his lead from the green flag to the checkers. Going into the last two weekends of racing, the excitement has been mounting in the points race for the number-one black plate in District 36. Going into this two-day event, Proto was at the top of the heap, and he maintained the points lead, but the CCM/Bieffe/ Motion Pro/AFAM/Rodman Custom Dezinzsponsored Souza is definitely in the hunt. With two more racing events left on the District 36 calendar, it's a very close competition that could be determined at the last race of the year in Vallejo on November 2. By KAREN GOULD LODI, CA, OCT. 19-20 District 36 and Lodi Cycle Bowl proudly presented the fourth annual Toby Jorgensen Memorial Race. As has been done for the past three years, Ladi Cycle Bowl raises funds to assist either a rider who has suffered a serious injury or a family that has lost a rider. This year's recipient of the funds was Dave Worthen, who started his racing career at age 11, winning his first trophy at Lodi and winning his last at the Toby Jorgensen Memorial in 2001. Riddle Racing's Bud Riddle provided a Husaberg for Worthen to take a ride around the track during the intennission. Racing on Saturday featured TT events, including the 1000c National race. With more than 30 heat races and 22 main events, it was a long but exciting night of racing. The Jorgensen family was in the stands, watching as the evening's racing started with the Pee Wees and then moved to the bigger bikes. Brandon Bernardeau and Michael Martin continued their season· long battle in the Pee Wee Senior A class. Bemardeau finished in front this night. but Martin came back to take the victory on Sunday in the short-track event. Little Scott Hampton was the victor on both days in the Pee Wee Stock C class, while Dominic Colindres and Brian Martinez were first and second on both days in the 50cc C class. D.J. Sharkey and Tony Davila traded 60cc A victories on Saturday and Sunday, and Van Nuys, California's Michael Avila took home the tallest brass in the 60cc B class on both days. Fast as lightning, the top finisher in the 80cc A class on Saturday and Sunday was Anthony Fang. Troy Milligan dominated the 80cc C class, and Chad Case took the win in the JOOcc Modified A class on Saturday. Darren Johnson won both the 100cc Modified C and 250cc C classes on Saturday and the 250cc C class on Sunday, while Norman Case won both the Vet C and Open C classes on Saturday. Mark Key was first from start to finish in the 100cc National. Steve Hall rode an incredible race, hitting the first turn in fifth but working his way through the pack to finish first in the Vet Over 40 contest, in front of Rich Oliver, in Saturday's TT. However, it was Robert McDonnell who took home the tall brass in Sunday's Vet Over 40 class. Competition in the Open A class was fierce, with 13 riders that included the fastest in District 36. Shawn Raggio got off the line and into the first turn first, with Matt Proto right on his back wheel, waiting for an error. Jesse Sanchez held tight in third. This was a very fast six-lap race. Coming out of the third turn, Proto unsuccessfully attempted to get by Raggio on the outside. and the finishing order was Raggio, Sanchez and Tony Souza. After finishing fourth in the Open A class, Danny Casey returned to the track to win the Pro Am. During Sunday's short-track racing, McGuire Harley-Davidson/Buell-sponsored Nick Conti took home the tall brass in both the Vet B and Open B events, while Rick Vargas was first in the Vintage C and Vet Over 40 C classes. Rab Racing's Robert Bacosa finished first in the Vet A contest, and Danny Giguere finished first in the Open C class. Giguere is completing his first year as a shorttracker after having raced motocross for five years, and his name has been at the top of the list of riders in his class in District 36 through- 84 NOVEMBER 13, 2002' cue Locli Cycle Bowl LocIi, Califomia Results: October 19-20, 2002 Satw-doyTT P/W S'Tl( A: I. Unlimited Sports 20th Annual Florida State AMA MX Championship Gold Cup Series Round &: Motocross World Ray Lasers to Hitblo Wins By CRAIG AND ANGELA JOHNSON BITHLO, FL, OCT. 20 Someone must have gone to the nearby Kennedy Space Center and borrowed a laser and loaned it to Eddie Ray so he could stun the competition at round six of the Florida Gold Cup Series. Ray lasered to two mota wins in the Over 25 class for the overall. In the first Four-Stroke mota, Ray didn't have quite the juice he needed and only came away with second place, but the next time out, Ray must have used the high-intensity button to hold back the field and take the second-mota win and the overalJ victory. Temperatures soared to the upper 80s. but the track, though rough, was fine all day, with the dust at a minimum. Unlimited Sports Zlnd the Motocross World track crews did a great job, and the day went smoothly, with 410 riders showing up to do battle at the penultimate round of the series. Jarrett Tipping shot to the front in the first Over 25 mota. His lead didn't last long, though, as Ray and Randy Jackson both went around him to head the field. Ray pulled out for the mota win, over Jackson. Tipping held on to third. Steve Dumond held off the advances of Jimmy Penski early on, and Penski later went out with a DNF. Shawn McKenna moved up to claim fifth. Ray shot to the front again in the second mota. This time, Tipping did not slip back and held on to second. keeping Ray in sight. Jackson held off Dumond for fourth, and McKenna was fifth. The Four-Stroke class was a little tougher. Paul Perebijnos took the lead and had the track wired. Ray tried keeping up, but Perebijnos had just a little extra. Perebijnos took the win, over Ray. Darryl Lind came in a distant third after holding off the advances of Quinton Bigalow. Gary Allred made it to fifth. The second moto was run late in the day, and the track was very rough. With the sun getting very low, the Four-Stroke riders set out into the sunset. When they came back to the front section of the track, Ray had the Honda working to his liking. Ray heid off Perebijnos to take an exciting win. Lind finished third, and T.J. Fontenot finished better than his first-mota 10th, in fourth. The scrap was on for fifth, as Sean Collins beat out Tracy Shepard. The first 250cc A mota was headed by Michael Stevenson, followed by Garrett Edmister, Brandon Butler and Allred. Stevenson quickly pulled out a couple of seconds and held that lead. Butler soon got heat from his brother Karsten for third, while Allred dropped back a couple of spots. Karsten made the pass and set out after the two leaders. Karsten kept trying but could only pull up to within a couple of seconds of Edmister. Stevenson kept his distance from the two, and the three finished the mota in that order. Billy Nuzzo and Ray Hansen rounded out the top five. At the start of moto two, Stevenson was nowhere to be found. Edmister and Karsten battled for the lead and overall win. Karsten took the Suzuki to the top, over Edmister. Brandon's luck was a little better this time, as he held on to third. Nuzzo and Hansen finished fourth and fifth. The 85cc Junior Mini (9-13) contest had its twists and turns on this day, Usually, Colten Maynard just about dominates this class, with Ricky Renner trying to play catchup. This day's event started out about the same, with MaynZlrd and Lucas Crespi leading side by side in the first couple of corners. Maynard came out on top of this skirmish, while Renner was back in sixth. Renner dis- =,....-....O;;-----:::--------------,z g z J: Q S w z '" < c z < :;;: '" II: U ~ ~ Q.
