Former IT National winner Randy Skiver continued to perform well, despite riding at a much slower pace than he was accustomed to in the 19705 while racing such facilities as Daytona and Ascot. On this day, Skiver topped the Pre-1970 and Over 50 Expert classes while campaigning Penton and Can· Am machmes, respectively. This event honored the late Mike Lightfoot of the Santa Clara Riders Unlimited Club (which promotes the event). who was also a member of the AHRMA board of directors. The Premier 500cc Expert contest was the only letdown experienced by Mcintosh all day. In moto one, Mcintosh overtook the early le.der, 500cc Triumph rider Kelly Shane, and stayed in front the entire moto to take a huge win on his 1960 Matchless. The second moto began .s a carbon copy of the first: Shane powered to an early lead, only to be overtaken by Mcintosh by the end of the first lap. On the end of lap four, with the white flag w.iting, Mcintosh had a momentary lapse of concentration that caused a simple spill at the righthand, high-banked comer, and out the window went Mcintosh's attempt at three wins in three classes. By the time he got restarted, both Shane and Robert Pool, on his 1963 BSA Gold Hollister Hills GP Tracie Chad Mcintosh won two classes and placed third in another at the 13th annual Mike Lightfoot Vintage Motocross Classic In Hollister, California. Star, had gotten by. Mcintosh tried, but there was too great a distance and too little time left for him to regain the lead. His 1-3 performance rewarded him with third overall. Shane (3·1) took first place, while the consistent Poole (2-2) placed second overall. Fortune smiled more favorably on Mcintosh in the Classic 500cc Expert class. He took the overall with double-moto wins over the smooth-riding Clark Sumner, on a 1972 Cheney Triumph, and George Gerstenberg, who put in a good comeback performance on a 1969 Cheney 441 cc BSA. In the Sportsman Open Twin Expert class, Mcintosh had fewer opponents, and they finished consistently behind his 1967 Triumph twin in both motos: Don Dotson, on a 1970 Triumph, and Sumner. on a '65 Triumph, trailed Mcintosh at the end. . The Over 40 Experts field included former World Champion Brad Lackey, worldrenowned Jaroslav Falta from the Czech Republic, and J.P. Morgan, who has had great success in recent AHRMA National and Regional events. However, it was Mountain View, California's Pat Brown, on a 1974 Bultaco, who beat everyone off the line. Nobody could catch Brown, as he was on the gas with a vengeance, braking hard and powering on earlier than anyone else coming off the cor· ners. Tom McKinney showed great form while working through traffic into second place both times out on his 1974 Husqvama. Brad lackey earned third in moto one and fourth in moto two for third overall. An honorary thirdplace trophy was awarded to Jaroslav Falta for his excellent finishes (third in both motos, though he WliS not scored, as he is not an AHRMA member). At the trophy presentation, Falta was given the 1975 CZ that was prepared for him by his personal sponsor. The assembled competitors gave him a rousing round of applause for coming from so far away and for his excellent riding. A Cinderella story unfolded in the Classic 500cc Intermediate class. The 1968 Triumph Metisse that Jim Musich was riding had been his bike a few years ago, but he sold it to Mike Lightfoot. Now the machine was back in Musich's hands. A pumped-Up Musich grabbed the holeshot in the first moto and never looked back; he was followed to the checkers by Robert Stuscavage, on a 1970 Bultaco. Third went to Jim Cole, on a '68 Cheney Triumph. The second-moto start was mastered by Greg Wright, on a 1968 BSA, but he was soon overtaken by Musich, who went on to gamer double-moto wins in the class and great applause from the riders at the trophy presentation. Wright (4-2) was second ovef8I1, and Cole (3-3) was third overall. Picking up the highly prized traveling trophy for first place in Mike Ughtfoot's class (Classic 500cc Novice) was Robert Stone, on his 1969 BSA 441, and he did it with a 2-1 performance. Second went to '67 Husqvama rider James Clark (1-2). James Upscomb, on a 1971 AJS, missed his first moto but sol- cue •• diered on for third in the second moto to pick up third overall. Grand National AMA Champion Joe Leonard was an honored guest. He and twotime Grand National AMA Champion Dick Mann spent some lime on the PA system, talking about their days in the Grand National Championship circuit. Other guests included Johnnie Lamonta, Donnie Castro, Billy Grossi and AI Rudy, who once raced on the Tom Sifton race team. The greatest percentage of trophies awarded to riders who reside outside California went to Nevada residents. Oregon didn't dominate as in years past. though their riders went home with four awards. Sixteen different states zmd two other countries were represented by a huge number of entries. Hollistar Hills GP Track Hollister. Califomia Results: October 20. 2002 (Round 171 SPTSMN 125 NOV: I.
