MRANN Series
Round 8: Fox Road Canyon
Zito Zings 'em
at the Gut Buster 100
By NICK "FACTORY" FAIN
YERINGTON, NV, OCT. 12-13
Coming into the eighth round of the MRANN
Series, which so far has seen five different
overall winners, Chris Zito became the sixth of
the season.
After having to make last-minute changes
to the course, the Mason Valley Dirt Squirts
pulled off a 40-mile, two-loop hare scrambles
that featured a variety of terrain, from fast
roads to technical downhills. Zito took the lead
at the start of the second lap and was never
seriously challenged again on his way to his
first overall win of the year.
After a short bomb run, the racers headed
up a long wash, with Sean Berryman scoring
the holeshot, followed by Zito, Steve Tichenor,
Ryan Johnson and Adam Thissen. Just five
miles in, Johnson took over the lead and started to pull away from Zito and Berryman, with
Tichenor hot on their heels. Recovering from a
bad start, Sam Key started to make his way
up through the pack and was quickly into
the third position. While trying to pass
Zito, Tichenor found a large rock and had a
nasty spill.
"I was trying to pass on the outside of the
dust and clipped a rock, which threw me over
.... the bars and onto the ground," Tichenor later
E recounted. "I was just starting to get up; then
my bike hit me."
:;
Things were starting to change up front,
- also, as Johnson had a nasty spill.
"I was way out front, and I hit something,"
a shaken-up Johnson said, "and when I went
"down, my head hit the ground pretty hard. I
~ also hod a bloody nose. so it looked bad when
~ I came into the pits."
At the end of the first lap, Johnson was
able to retain his lead. but Zito had closed the
_gap ond pulled right up behind him as they
entered the pits. Johnson decided to call it a
day due to his oching head and bloodied face.
With Johnson out, Zito left on the second loop
about three minutes before Key, now in second, entered the pits. Next to leave on the
second loop were Berryman, Thissen and
Tichenor, who was making up ground following his first-loop crash.
On the second loop, Key was charging
hard and catching Zito. Then his tire went flat,
and so did his charge.
"I was having a great second loop and
everything was just clicking," Key said. "Then
I hit a rock and my tire went nat. After that,
I just tried to hold it on without the tire
coming off."
Another three minutes back, Berryman
was enjoying a trouble-free ride in third, and
Tichenor had passed Thissen for fourth.
At the finish, Zito took the checkered nag
with four minutes to spare.
"After Johnson had his crash and pulled
out, I just kept a good pace and had no reol
problems," Zito explained of his first overoll
win.
Key wobbled across the line next, with
Berryman holding on to the third position.
Tichenor held off Thissen, despite his aching
body.
"My ribs hurt, but I think they are just
bruised," he reported. "I had to ride hard to
forget about the pain."
Thissen held on to fifth, followed by Over
30 rider Thomas Hampton, Paul Ziegler,
Jason Alosi, Michael Williams and Eric Hatch.
James"Jackie Chan" Chavis, who finished
13th and won the Four-Stroke class, rode both
loops with a freshly broken wrist.
"I broke my wrist last week, and I was just
going to do one loop, but I felt okay, so I went
out again, Chavis said. "I needed the points
to keep my lead in the Four-Stroke class, but I
didn't expect to win it.
In 80/60cc action, ll-year-old Josh Morros took another overall victory, over Eric
Amacker and Ryan Toomey. In the 50cc race,
Ty Tremoine had an easy day, taking the win,
followed by Cory Chapman and Sierra Hunniwell. In the 70cc Mini race, Tyler Hyman took
the win.

Round 5: Pax Trax MX Park
Truman Makes Trax
ond, where he had to try to hold off Warren.
Truman motored away with the win, and Warren passed Finnegan for second after the
halfway mark. Stewart moved through the
pack to end up fourth, and Dale Kump rounded out the top five.
R.J. Hampshire and Cody Chisholm
resumed their rivalry in the 50cc Oil-Injected
Stock class. Hampshire won moto one, but
Chisholm was not about to give up just yet.
Chisholm led moto two, but Hampshire set up
the pass a couple of laps later. Hampshire
dived to the inside of one of the big bowl turns
to make a block-pass. In doing so. Hampshire
made sure the pass was going to stick as he
took Chisholm all the way out into the weeds.
Chisholm tried the same pass at the same corner on the next lap but was unsuccessful.
Chisholm tried one more time at the start of
the last lap, pulling up beside Hampshire
going down the front straight. The two ran into
lapped traffic, and Hampshire won the moto
and the overall, extending his perfect score in
the series.
Donald Dipema extended his points lead in
the 50cc (7-8) class by winning both motos.
The Cobra rider led moto one from beginning
to end. Staying in second from the start was
Matthew Wall. Hector Roman Jr. held off the
advances of Clifford Sanders for third, and
Darin Walker moved up to fifth.
Dipema resumed the top position the second moto. Roman held second, ahead of
Walker, Austin Cole and Wall. Dipema pulled
away, while Roman tried to hold off Wall for
second. Sanders moved to fourth, ahead of
Cole, as Walker dropped to sixth. WaH passed
into second before falling at the S tum a lap
later. At the halfway nag, Cole moved into
second, ahead of Roman, with Sanders and
Walker only a few feet behind. Sanders was
the next to fall, but he only dropped to fifth.
Diperna won the moto, and it came down to a
two-rider battle for second. Roman wanted the
second spot back and on the last lap decided
it was now or never. Roman got a good jump
going down the back straight and got the pass
over the last tabletop.

BUNNELL. FL, OCT. 13
Dan Truman made his mark at the fifth round
of the Florida Gold Cup Series, where a total
of 413 riders were greeted by great weather
and a perfectly prepared track at Pax Trax MX
Park. Truman left his tire tracks for the field to
foilow in the 250cc B class, winning both
motos. In the first 16-24 moto, Truman made
it up to third; but Truman led every lap in the
final moto, except for the holeshot. Truman's
only loss came in the 125cc B class. to Suzuki
rider Davi Millsaps. Truman leads the 125cc B
and 250cc B-c1ass points but has an uphill
battle trying to catch Ryan Warren in the
16-24 class, with a 13-point deficit.
Truman led the first 250cc B moto, followed by Shawn Mayo, Ryan Warren. Eric
Stewart and Chris Brice. The top four pulled
away in a close battle for the lead, as Brice
tried to hold off three other riders for fifth.
Truman slipped away and let the others
decide the second position. Mayo made a big
mistake. letting Warren and Stewart by. The
top four were set, and Steve Dumond moved
to fifth.
Stewart grabbed the lead in the second
moto, but Truman passed him before the lap
was over. Truman pulled out a few bikelengths
ahead of Stewart, as Dumond passed Brice for
third. Warren started seventh and charged to
fifth by the end of lap one. Stewart kept close
and moved up on Truman's rear wheel with
two laps to go. Stewart made a couple of
attempts to pass but came up just short when
the checkered nag new. Dumond held on to
third, and Warren only got one more spot, for
fourth. Shawn McKenna charged to fifth.
Stewart and Bradley Bernier battled down
the back straight the first lap to see who was
going to lead the first 16-24 moto. Bemier got
the nod past the grandstands, putting Stewart
in second. Mayo, Mike Finnegan and Truman
were all in the hunt. The top two tried pulling
away from the others, but only Bemier was
successful. Finnegan briefly moved to third
before going down. Truman got by Mayo for
third, with Warren in fifth. Bernier won the
moto, and Stewart held off Truman for second. Mayo lost one more spot, to Warren, on
the last lap.
