Branson Motocross Championships Branson USA (Left) Cody Dickey of Texas had an outstanding week at the Branson Motocross Championships, topping the 125cc Stock Intermediate, 125cc Modified Intermediate and 125cc Open Non-Pro classes. Dickey aced every moto en route to three championship wins. Bv KAT SPANN AND THE BECKSTER PHOTOS BV CHRIS ADAMS GALENA, MO, OCT. 3-6 exan Cody Dickey showed the way to six perfect moto performances for three titles at the eighth annual Branson Motocross Championships, topping the 125cc Stock and Modified Intermediate classes in addition to the 125cc Open Non-Pro class. Idaho's Jake Weimer matched Dickey's performance of six moto wins, in the 85cc (14-16) Stock and Modified and Supermini classes to gather up three championships for himself. When referring to the Branson USA Motocross Championships, one can't help but think of the line from the movie Field of Dreams; "If you build it, they will come." A record 1258 entered riders showed up in Galena, situated along the banks of the James River, near Branson. Dickey stole the show, using his Munn Racing KTM to win each of his division rounds, going into all three run-offs with a single point. Sunday's 125cc Open race saw Dickey out front from the start, with Missouri's David Frye and Oklahoma's Robbie Smith in pursuit. Smith got around Frye on lap two, but Dickey had already checked out and was long gone, despite the muddy track conditions. Smith appeared to have second in the bag until he fell in the switch· back section, which handed the number-two spot back to Frye. Later in the day, Dickey returned to the gate in the 125cc Intermediate Stock class and repeated his earlier performance by nailing the holeshot and winning by a considerable mar· gin. Mark Blackwell gated second, but Charlie Morrison got by him on lap two and held the position to the finish, with Blackwell taking third. Blackwell's 2-3 tally, however, knocked out Morrison on the overall scale. Morrison's seven points going into the final and his second-place finish in the run-off garnered fifth overall, behind New Mexico's Michael Chiudioni and Missouri's Ryan Wohlberg, who claimed third and fourth, respectively. Weimer wreaked havoc in the older Minibike classes by staying ahead of California's Justin Keeney in the 85cc Stock (14-16) contest and Texan Ryan Grantom in the 85cc (14-16) Modified contest. In the Supermini class, it was Virginian Zach Osborne who nailed the holeshot in the final run-off, chased by Weimer, Keeney and Grantom. All three got around Osborne on the first lap and set a fast pace. Osborne stayed close to the front-runners and passed Grantom for third before the white-flag lap. In the final stretch on the last lap, Weimer went down in the switchbacks. Keeney was right behind him but slowed down because of the mud; Weimer remounted and headed to the checkered flag. Keeney caught up to Weimer, but Weimer held his mark and took the win by a knobby at the finish line. Ian Trettle made the trek from North Carolina to southeast Missouri to put his Suzuki on top of the podium twice, but not before battling with Georgia's Bubba Crosby. Trettle claimed the 65cc Stock and Modified (9-11) championships with four out of four moto wins. Crosby countered back in the 65cc Open class by taking the run-off win and the championship, using a 2-1 score to best Trettel's 1-4 tally. Washington's Landon Currier (3-2) was second overall. Suzuki· mounted Colt Humphrey of Oklahoma was the big Pro winner, using four moto wins for the overall top spot. Humphrey got the holeshot in the first 125cc Pro moto on Thursday, hounded by Vernon McKiddie of Texas. McKiddie got by Humphrey for a brief period, but once Humphrey repassed him, it was all over. McKiddie followed Humphrey throughout the eight-lap moto to finish second, followed by Michigander Brad Smith and Floridian Drew Kain. The second 125cc Pro moto once again had Humphrey and McKiddie out front, with Humphrey holding the reins all the way in for the win. McKiddie held on to second through lap five, when Smith came up behind for the pass. Then Jon-Boy Monk also got around McKiddie, forcing the Texan back to fourth. Humphrey's perfect pair of aces awarded him the overall win. Smith (3-3) was second, with McKiddie (2-4) third. Humphrey continued his winning streak in the 250cc Pro motos, but it wasn't easy. Eddie Ray got the firstmoto holeshot, with fellow Floridian Drew Kain in second and Humphrey in third. Humphrey got around Kain early and passed Ray for the lead at the top of lap two. Monk gated fourth but passed Kain and then Ray and set out to pursue Humphrey. Monk never let up, but Humphrey held his ground and took the win, followed by Monk, Ray, Kain and Missouri's Ryan Lewis. (Below) Ian Trettel journeyed from North Carolina to southwest Missouri to take wins in the 65cc Stock and Modified 19-11) classes, in addition to placing second In the 85cc Stock (Through II) class and third in the 65cc Open class In Galena, Missouri. The second moto was red-flagged twice before finally getting under way. Monk got the holeshot, with Humphrey giving chase. On lap two, Humphrey railed the inside line of the first sweeper after the finish-line area and went on to take his fourth moto win and second overall championship, while Monk held on to second. eN Branson USA 6alena, Missouri Results; Octllber 3-6, 2002 5/P/W (6-9): I.
