Oregon State Motocross Championship Series Rounds 5-6: Madras Motocross Park STORY AND PHOTOS BY CLAY LIGHT MADRAS, OR, OCT. 19·20 amaha-mounted Jesse Bath's return from an injury-induced layoff has been one of both frustration and jubilation, but on this particular weekend at Madras Motocross Park, it was one of triumph for the AMA National veteran. At rounds five and six of the Oregon State Motocross Championship Series, Bath scored five overall Pro·c1ass wins at the two· day event while riding his Yamaha YZ250 and YZ426F machines. Bath, though, wasn't the only rider to achieve the ultimate in success, as 15-year-old Pete Sannan topped three classes per day for six overall wins on the weekend, snaring the Schoolboy, Before The Hill and 125cc Intermediate-class wins. On Saturday, Chris Alldredge, Brad Frace and Curtis Sweezey joined Bath and Sannan as winners of more than one class; California's Sweezey was the dominant rider in the 80cc (12·13) and Supermini classes, while Alldredge and Frace controlled the small-displacement classes. Frace flew to victories in the 60cc (7 -8) and 60cc Open classes, while local rider Alldredge won the 50cc (4-6) and 50cc Open classes on his Cobra. Bath's first of two overall Saturday wins came in the 125cc Pro/Intermediate contest, in which he was the lone Professional rider. Bath had challenges from the KTM-mounted Sannan, but Bath held off Sannan in both motos to win overall. Yamaha rider Jacob Oberle trailed the duo in both motos and finished second overall to Sannan in the 125cc Intermediate class. The adjoined 125cc Junior class was won by one of the five 14-year-olds in the field of 16 riders, Kenneth Hammontree. The oldest rider, former AMA National and Supercross rider Nev LaBorde, 37, 72 NOVEMBER 13, 2002' cue won moto two and finished second overall, ahead of Ross Miller. Bath had brutally tough competition in the 250cc Pro class, as Washington's J.R. Vielle brought his Honda CRF450R out to the high desert. Bath found the challenges tough in the eariy going, although the Oregonian pulled away with each successive lap and won both motos, as well as overall. Sweezey and Ben Anglen split moto wins in the competitive Supermini class on Saturday, but it was Sweezey, who hails from nearby Mount Shasta in California, who won the moto-two shootout and won overall. Southern Oregon speedster Byron Young separated Sweezey and Anglen by placing 2-2 for second overall, followed by Anglen (1-3), Matt Wilson (4-4) and Blake Anglen (6-5) in the 15-rider field. On Sunday, Bath had larger fields of riders to contend with in all three of his classes, but the Herb's Cycle Town/Answer-backed rider had all of the answers for the competition. AMA National Four-Stroke rider Jack Meadows gave Bath challenges in the second 250cc Pro moto after Meadows had overcome a poor start; Meadows got around Brian Mockridge and Devin Watson late in moto two to finish two bikelengths behind Bath at moto's end and snare second overall. Mockridge, an Intermediate rider, ran amid the field of Professional riders in moto two, but the Yamaha rider took a nasty spill on the next-to-Iast circuit, and both Tyler Fitzsimons and Shayne Strigle swept past the downed rider before he could remount. Strigle, who was piloting a Honda CRF450R, won the Intermediate class overall, ahead of Fitzsimons, Mockridge and Kyle Cocherell. Sannan's spectacular Sunday started off with a win in the Schoolboy class, which be easily dominated. Suzuki rider Danny Costa kept close tabs on Sannan in the second moto, but Costa was contesting the adjoined Before The Hill Junior class and won overall in that class after trading moto wins with fellow RM jockey Jeremy Mickelson. Sweezey's day wasn't quite as satisfying as the previous day, as, after handily topping the first 80cc Age Group moto, Sweezey fell while lead- Pete sannan was the weekend's top performer, posting the Schoolboy, 12Scc and Before The Hili Intermediate wins in Madras, Oregon, on both days. n _ VII' S • e Jesse Bath scored five Pro-class wins at the twoday Oregon State Championship Series event at Madras Motocross Pari<. ing moto two and had a lot of ground to make up, while Young held the lead. Sweezey was nearly a lap down but kept the throttle on to finish ninth in the 80cc (12-13) portion, which was won by Young (2-1). Blake Anglen (3-2), Aaron McClinton (4-4) and Ben Anglen (7-4) followed. Wilson, the lone rider in the 80cc (14-16) class, challenged Young in a moto-two duel, narrowly losing out to the Honda rider at the finish. Gared Steinke topped both 80cc (7-11) class motos, followed by Bradley Hillman and Cole Huha. eN Mld..s Motocnlss Pirie Mldns, Oregon Results: Octllber 1B-20, 2002 (Rounds 5 Ind &J Saturday P/W (4·6): 1.
