On Sunday, in the shadow of Grand Lake's Pensacola Dam, Chaves made certain of the win by posting a perfect day - 24 clean rides - taking the win and the championship. Kempkes took a single dab on loop two at the top of one of the biggest walls of the event to finish second for the day and second overall in the series. Saturday's win might have been determined more by a tire-pressure adjustment than by rider execution. With the extremely good traction afforded in the Langley riding area, combined with the very large rocks used for the event, most riders were playing it safe and running a bit more tire pressure to avoid punctures. (Kempkes elected to run five pounds in the rear after suffering a rear puncture on lap one.) However, the course marshals tripped everyone up when they added a slippery log section for variety. Two days of steady rain over the weekend left competitors checking the lake level for fear that too much rain might prompt the Corp of Engineers to open the dam gates. flooding the course. Luckily. the lake level had been unseasonably iow prior to the weekend.
