Formula USA/Lockhart-Phillips Unlimited Superbike Series Final Round: Daytone International Speedway Larry Denning (Yam) was his foil in the Expert Unlimited Supersport, the pair taking over the front two spots on the second of five laps, then swapping the lead until the fourth lap when the Suzuki GSX-R 1OOO-mounted Ashmead took it for good. Denning never gave up, chasing Ashmead to the line but coming up 0.570 seconds short. Team Embry/Roadracingworld.com's Geoff May, who ran off the track in the West Horseshoe on the first lap, charged back to finish third. Two races later, Ashmead was at it again, this time on his Suzuki GSXR750 and against a different opponent, the front-runner Scott Greenwood. New England Performance's Greenwood got the jump on the field at the start and built up a two-second lead in the early going, Ashmead making his way forward and into second on the second lap. From there he began whittling away, catching Greenwood on the final lap and blowing by on the backstraight. The margin of victory would be .51 of a second, Greenwood second, and KSW Cycle's Anthony Fania. The result was protested and, a day later, Ashmead conceded the victory, preferring not to have the engine tom down. "They think there's cams in it," Ashmead said. "My mechanic's [Dave Buckman] in the hospital and they want to tear it down. I just ride the things. I don't work on them. I'm going to pay the fine." Formula USA/Buell Lightning Series Final RoundL: Daytona International Speedway STORV AND PHOTOS BV HENNV RAV ABRAMS DAYTONA BEACH, FL, OCT 20 Ua1k about long odds. In order for Bryan Bemisderfer to win the Buell Lightning Series championship, he had to first find a motorcycle to race, then hope that misfortune somehow struck both series leader Michael Barnes and second in points Clint Brotz. Sure, it could happen, but it didn't look good, at least not until the second lap. Bemisderfer came to Florida as something of a hard-luck case. The tall and sturdy Pennsylvanian was leading the championship going into the penultimate round at Portland International Raceway when his team owner pulled the plug. While Michael Barnes was running away from a very small field, Bemisderfer was suffering at home in Greencastle, Pennsylvania. He spoke then of the possibility 28 OCTOBER 30. 2002' a: U a: of borrowing a machine for Daytona, and it came through. He qualified fourth fastest, though Barnes was in a class by himself, nearly three seconds faster than Kosco Harley-Davidson/Buell teammate David Estok and almost five up on Bemisderfer who had machine problems in qualifying. Brotz ran afoul of FUSA rules in qualifying and was disqualified, put to the back of the five-row grid. Barnes, as expected, took the lead from the start, Bemisderfer and Estok going with him, Brotz moving up from the back of the field, but not for long. Going into turn one on the second lap, Brotz crashed, taking Hal's Harley-Davidson teammate, and brother-in-law Richie Morris with him, ending his hopes for the title. Michael Bames (11 crashed out of the lead, and the championship chase, In the Buell Lightning final, giving way to Bryan Bemlsderfer (981. who took the title. Out front, Barnes was crUisIng, eight seconds in hand by the third lap, nearly 12 by the fifth. He wouldn't complete the sixth. Going into the dogleg on the sixth lap, less than three laps from a certain title, Barnes crashed spectacularly, the bike reducing itself to its component parts. Barnes was lucky to walk away.
