The race, however, was won by David Estok. "Something mechanical broke at full lean angle in the dogleg," he said. "The ass end came around and I just got on my back real quick." That put Estok in the lead, with Bemisderfer second with plenty of cushion on Boston Buell/New England Motorsports' Mark Reynolds. All he had to do to win the title was maintain. "I didn't want to waste my tires early in the race," he said. When his engine began to misfire in the final stages, it caught his attention, but he held on for second and the title. The final margin was three points, Bemisderfer's 120 to Barnes' 117. Brotz ended up third at 113. "I feel wonderful," Bemisderfer said, adding that he knew it would take bad luck to hit Barnes and Brotz for him to succeed. "I wanted to be able to take advantage of it." Estok had been drafted onto the Kosco team late in the season to help Barnes. Because Barnes was leading the championship, Estok could have raced him for the win. "I hated to see Barney [Barnes] go down," the Floridian said, adding that he wasn't a threat on this day. "I think I missed the setup this morning. We made some changes before the race and had a real bad chatter." Still, he won by 11.412 seconds, with Bemisderfer over seven seconds in front of Mark Reynolds. "That was a little bit of a surprise," Reynolds said. "I only got in about six laps of practice out there. I was just trying to keep the bike together."
