Meyers Takes Two at Ramona By HOMER EuBANKS RAMONA, CA. SEPT. 29 The racing action was mixed throughout the day at Barona Oaks Raceway. The last day of summer was dry. hot and dusty, which may have contributed to the fact that only 155 riders signed up. David Meyers was on his game and went home a double-class winner after taking repeat wins in the 125cc Intermediate and 16-25 c1esses. For the second week in a row, Meyers received some heated competition from i!ln old nemesis, Josh Navarro, who went 2-2 in the age-group class. Also consistent on the day was Danny Hart, who took home third overall. Navarro won his 125cc Novice class with repeat wins over Hector Hernandez. Kyle Corfman rode his KTM in the 65cc (9-11) and Open classes and captured all four moto wins. In both class events, Nigel Johnson threatened Corfman's perfect day. Casey Harries eamed the third-overall spot in the 65cc (9·11) class with his 4-3 shOWing. Garret Jackson was third in the Open class with his 3-3 moto results. Daniel Overton mastered the 65cc (0-8) class by taking the checkered flag in both motos. The action was for second, as Kevin Weisbruch and Blake Campos swapped the second spot back and forth. Campos was able to edge out Weisbruch in the first moto, but Weisbruch came back in mota two, when it counted most, dropping Campos to third overall. In the 50cc (0-9) Super Pee Wee class, Eric Yorbe enjoyed repeat wins. Yorba was challenged early in the first moto by Carlos Don, but Don did not finish, earning 13th place. Overton ended the day second overall after his 2 -3 efforts. Don was able to keep the rubber side down in moto two and crossed over second, behind Yorba. However, his 13-2 total dropped him to seventh overall. Brian Taylor rode his Polini to repeat wins in the 50cc (0-6) Stock and Modified classes. Clayton Cooke managed to match the pace set by Taylor in the Modified class, allowing Cooke to cross over second in both races. In the Stock event, Cooke hung with Taylor in moto one but dropped back to fifth in the second moto. Wyatt Alvarez had finished fifth in moto one, but he hung with Taylor in moto two for second overall. Results 50 (0·8) m SHAFT, 1. J _ />\ouIck (Pol), 2. a""l Banegas (Hen); 3. Middleweight Grand Prix In the125cc Junior race, Miller had his Suzuki dialed in to the rough Bulldogs track, winning both motos. Wayne Dennis (2-2) turned in a couple of great rides to make second overall. The race for third through fifth was a two-moto dogfight, with Jay Jackson (3-4), Ryan Watson (5-3) and Hiltz (4-5) trading places and paint all day long. Jackson ended up third. with Watson and Hiltz rounding out the top five in a race that could have gone to anyone. The big man at Tech-Care Suspension, David Bowman, was also a double-class winner, grabbing both the Over 35 and Over 40 overalls. In the Over 35 class, Bowman got a with a good start in moto one: he stayed on the gas and took the win. Bowman also took the checkered flag in moto two after a great ride. Courtney Riester gave chase from the drop of the gate but couldn't match Bowman's speed. Riester (2-2) and Phil Peyton (3-3) placed second and third overall. Bowman had his hands full in the Over 40 class, as 16 of District 14's old-school fast guys were looking to grab the top prize. In moto one, Kip Bigelow grabbed the start, ahead of 2001 Over 40 Amateur National Champion Dave Mack, with Mark Reed, Brian Evans and Bowman giving chase. Bigelow rode away with the win, and Mack held tough in second, despite pressure from Bowman. Reed and Evans duked it out all moto, with Reed holding on to win the battle over Evans. Moto saw Bigelow drop out of the race with bike problems. Bowman gated better in moto two and held the lead, but Mack knew that he had to beat Bowman to take the overall, and the race was on. Bowman was solid ali moto long and held off Mack to grab his second overall of the day on a 3-1 score. Mack (2-2) was second overali with a pair of seconds. Reed (4-4) claimed the last spot on the podium. Rounding out the top five were Evans (5-5) in fourth and Tim Jackson (6-6) in fifth. In 125cc B action, Scotty Thomason finished second in both motos for second overllll, coming back from a broken anm suffered at Loretta's that slowed his charge for a 125cc B state championship. Third went to Brandon Reed (3-4). and Matt Durst (5-3) nabbed fourth overall. Fifth overail went to Nick Hiltz, who came home fourth in mota one and then backed it up with a sixth place in moto two after coming from way back in the pack after a less-than-shining start.
