congrats to Team USA for giving it all that you had." 11 ••• Trailblazers Thanks First of all, I want to thank our three top flat track racers of all time, the Grand Marshals at Del Mar - Scott Parker, Carroll Resweber and Joe Leonard. They provided interviews, made appearances at parties, did autograph sessions, and led the famous "Lap of Legends." I also want thank all the legendary racers from the past five decades who joined our "Lap of Legends." This year's lap was the best ever. Lastly, I especially want to thank all the Grand National racers who provide the excitement and entertainment of the mile race. Every time they go out onto the track, it is for our racing enjoyment. Thanks to all. ~ -< '" ~ Andrea PhIllips Hunttngton Beach, CA m '" :D C :I: ....:=..Il.._ _- l z _ _---J..._ _...JL Phillips is the Trailblazers archivist and the coordinator of the "Lap of Legends"... Editor Thanks for Nothing I just wanted to drop a quick note to say thanks to the off-road riders, and you know who you are, for getting some of the best trails in the Rand Mountains closed. To everyone who rode cross country in the designated trail area, or who cut fences on closed routes, a big thumbs up (or another finger), and thank you for your selfish and irresponsible riding. I just went riding for the first time since last May out in the Rand Mountains, and over 17,000 acres of land now has brand-new, shiny fencing around it, and some of the best trails (5, 15,25,40, etc.) are all now closed. The reason? Off-road vehicles, specifically motorcycles, would not obey the designated trail policy, and barriers put up to close certain routes were damaged, cut and ignored. I have been riding off-road for over 30 years, and while I don't agree with everything the BLM does to us, we need to realize we are a minority that some of the majority hate. Bruce Bluemm Palmdale, CA Excitement Hay-den: a two syllable word that means "Total Excitement." Dirt track will never be the same without Nicky and his two brothers, Tommy and Roger Lee. Those guys bring such excitement and fun back to a sport that, to me, has been missing since Ricky Graham left us. Jeff Evans Agoura. CA Only one Hayden, Nicky, is leaving... Editor The World Cup's Team USA: (from left to right) Sean Hamblin, Kyle Lewis and Tim Ferry. The World Cup, Again Back from the grave, the Motocross des Nations became a Nation of Motocross as the World Cup of Motocross. Great venue at Glen Helen, great future with 80cc Experts, and a great past with the Fast Masters - and a great present with the Teams of the World. We dug the three 20-minute motos and very intense racing. Congratulations to all and thanks for bringing such talent to Southern California motocross fans. I'm glad to have been a part of it, and we'll be back for the World Cup of Motocross in 2003! Lee ChapIn Y7a the Internet And Again Great job by Rick Doughty of Vintage Iron in leading the charge to make the World Cup of Motocross a great success. The many companies and individuals that came on board with such short notice did America proud. The factory Suzuki and Yamaha teams are to be commended for their 1OO-percent support of our sport. You can be sure that my next new bike will be yellow or blue! Honda, Ricky Carmichael and Mike LaRocco - you guys really missed the boat. The track was great, the weather cool, and the racing hot. And what about those Fast Masters? They were fast! It was great to see Marty Smith, Danny LaPorte, Wardy, Chuck Sun and other guys my age flying down Mt. S1. Helens. It definitely was an historical day. Don Wallace Is There a Doctor In The House? One More I just wanted to thank Glen Helen for all of their hard effort to put together a last-minute race to substitute the Motocross des Nations. I did not understand the magnitude of the des Nations shut-down. I am surrounded by motocross in California, so I did not understand that people from around the world had put their vacations and their hard-earned money on the line to attend this event until one day before the event. I met a couple of guys from Canada who were down for the event. They had planned their entire vacation around the des Nations, and now had nothing to do. That moment made me realize that this race was much bigger than I thought. The World Cup was the best I have ever been to, and the racing was none other than top notch. Thank you to all who attended but, most importantly, thank you to all that were involved and all that participated. The race brought a sense of pride, and I was honored to have all of these different teams on our soil. Even though I have never been to the des Nations, I now understand and respect the magnitude of the event. I had the privilege of meeting people from other countries and appreciate their politeness and understanding. The people that came from around the world are the true heroes, and I want to say thank you for making it an event I will not forget. Also, congrats to Team USA for giving it all that you had. I truly believe that we had America's best riders there - the ones with the biggest hearts and the most determination. Somebody call a doctor. I can't stop hyperventilating after watching the Imola round of the World Superbike Series. Please do a special report on what happened to the Honda team after race one at Laguna. I mean, was there a toggle switch hidden that the team hadn't noticed until Colin Edwards came in third behind Ruben Xaus? Surely Edwards is not really going on unemployment insurance, is he? If Ducati really did sign him, then why keep it a secret? I've checked with my accountant to see if I could afford to hire Colin and buy a tip-top World Superbike team - like maybe for just next year. "Not at this time" was the reply on my answering machine, but added to this was "Why not get Cyete News interested?" A big thank you for a very good year of race reporting. Best Regards, JetrMeek Y7a the Internet Allen Mattock Y7a the InffHnet Redlands, CA c U .. I e Edwards Is King I would like to give Colin Edwards a big old "Hell, yeah" for kicking butt and being the new World Superbike Champion. God bless you! I hope Yamaha will get you signed for MotoGP, because if Honda doesn't want you, it would be the perfect payback for them letting you go. Thank you for a great year. You never gave up and rode your butt off. You should be an inspiration to every racer! I wish you and your family well. Don't mess with Texas. God Bless the USA. n • vv s OCTOBER 23. 2002 5
