Ohio International Raceway Hattery Tops 'em at OIR Bv ROB PErRAs RAVENNA, OH, SEPT. 15 A.J. Hattery from Navarre, Ohio, is on the comeback trail. Injuries interfered with his contesting the Amateur National Championships, but he's putting his bad luck behind him and pounding the competition. Hattery took his Black Hawk MotorsportsfThor/Earth £, Wood/Ohio Health Group SU2Uki RM 125 to four moto wins and a couple of overalls. Hattery got the holeshot in both 125cc Schoolboy (12-15) motos and rode with a quick, fluid tempo, despite ever-changing track conditions. With intermittent showers throughout the day, the course ranged from sloppy to very nearly perfect. Taking two second-place finishes was Yamaha-mounted Tom Ahola from Rockcreek, Ohio. Ahola started outside the top five in both motos but easily worked through the pack for second overall. Third overall was Louis Szopo, who charged to 4-4 finishes on his Yamaha. Hattery was just as impressive in the 125cc B class, grabbing the lead from the start in both motos and guiding the pack on every lap. He was never headed, and he even began to work his way up into the Heavyweight Pro-class riders that had stagger-started ahead of him. Kawasaki jockey Johnny Woodford (3-2) topped KTM-mounted Nick Samuels (2-3) for second. Another rider who had a great day was Honda racer Robert Felmlee, who resembles National number 23 Pro racer Kyle Lewis - not only visually but speedwise, too. The qUick starter put his talents to use in the Over 30 and Over 40 classes, leading every lap and pulling out comfortable victories for both overalls. Going 2-2 in Over 30 competition was KLM rider Elmar Kruza, who started lOth in moto two but sliced and diced his way through the pack. Third was Mark Hummer, on a Honda. Second overall in the Over 40 was KTMmounted Don Edixon (2-2). Yamaha rider Daniel Dobrilovic snagged third overall with his consistent 4-4 tally. One of the best races of the day was the 6Scc class. logan Mihoci snatched the lead in moto one, with Curt Gaski and Brandon Zentner behind him. The three Kawasaki jockeys separated themselves from the rest of the pack. At the completion of lap one. Mihoci slid sideways and Gaski pounced into ftrst. Mihoci regained the lead as Gaski went down. Then Zentner took over the lead, and all three stayed close. Suddenly, Zentner took a tumble, knocking himself back to third. Gaski wasn't letting up; he was trying different lines to overtake the leader. In one of those lines, he became bogged down in the soft stuff. Mihoci took the win, followed by Gaski, with Zentner a distant third. In moto two, Gaski was out front off the start, with Mihoci and Zentner in tow. Mihoci made the pass for the lead around the big front straightaway sweeper. Zentner then pushed his way into second a lap later. Gaski held on for third. Fourth overall was KTM rider Garret Leveto (5-4), and Kawasaki pilot Jimmy Kaylor (4-5) was fifth. Possum Trot Track Weisenfels Plays the Possum to Perfection By SAM BARRETT HARRISON, AR, SEPT. 22 KTM of Fayetteville/Acerbis/Renthal/HJCbacked Josh Weisenfels has been simply flawless on his new KTM 200 EXC. Weisenfels and the KTM really work well together. Weisenfels has won seven overall victories in a row since obU3ining the new mount. He raced the series last year as a 15-year-old on a KTM 125 SX and took the third overall in the series in 2001. After the first race of 2002, he switched to a KTM 200 EXC, and everything just clicked. Round nine of the Arkansas Hare Scrambles Championship Series was held at the Possum Trot Track in Harrison, Arkansas, which is a great place to race. The terrain was perfect and the setting was to die for. Racing conditions could not have been better, with cool weather hitting the area and some rains earlier in the weeks making for no dusty trails. Pro rider Weisenfels got off to a good start, getting the holeshot and hanging in first place all day. The fact that there was no traffic on the tight trails helped Weisenfels maintain the lead on the first lap. Weisenfels had started to pull away from the other riders but soon encountered some lapped traffic; the trail was so tight that finding a place to pass was quite a challenge. This was a race where getting a good start was very important. Tulsa Cycle jockey Craig Chapman was in chase from the start on his KTM, followed by Yamaha-mounted Eli Johnson in third. Before the first check, Johnson was on the move as well, and he overtook Chapman and moved into the second-place position. Despite a bad start, Matt Bumett moved into second after the first lap and he held that position until the fifth lap, when Johnson reeled him in and made the pass to claim the second-place position, which he would hold until the end. Burnett had an impressive show, with a third-place finish. Chapman finished in fourth place. M: 1. Josh Weisl!:nfels: 2. Ell Johnson: 3. Matt Burnett: 4. CraIg Chepman; 5. Jeff Lamay. TR: 1. Wild Wilderness Raceway The Blair Mud Project By RUPERT X. PELLETT LOGAN, OH, SEPT. 15 Marietta, Ohio's own Mike Blair, a fonner fast Pro who spends time stalking the older motocross classes now, was not afraid of a little moisture in Logan, as he sped about the greasy circuit like a madman. This intricate circuit. on the side of a ridge in southern Ohio, features all manner of obstacles, both natural and 'dozer-made. However, the steady drizzle that began falling was the "great equalizer," and for those riders who could stay on two wheels through the white ( ...well, brown) flag, things were going good. The promoter decided that one moto would be plenty under these conditions, and when the program was shortened, no one argued much. Blair has an impressive pedigree when dealing with muddy conditions, and, mounted on his Suzuki and ready to take home some contingency money, he was enthusiastic about the prospects of getting wet and dirty. "Mud is good," explained the speedy veterlin racer. "Me like mud!" Blair streaked away with two single-moto wins, taking the Over 25 and Over 30 A victories, enjoying a lengthy lead in both races. The Mini Senior race was all about Codi Adams and his Beechmont Yamaha YZ85. He swam through the muck on his machine and bested the entire class, putting on a mudracing clinic while winning the 85cc (12-15) class. F£,S Suzuki's Charlie Dunaway took the 250cc A win, while Gavin Gracyk slid home first in the 125cc A class. Gracyk's Team Green teammate Justin Weeks from Cincinnati had another great District II/Buckeye Series day, taking the 65cc and Mini Junior 85cc (7 -11) classes by storm. Other double class winners included Kyle Preston, who topped the 125cc B and Schoolboy classes, and Mark Kiser, who was victori· ous in the Over 25 and Over 30 B divisions. Two Brothers Racing teammates Walker and Hunter Brightwell both twisted the throttles 0 their Cobras and won a 50cc class; Hunte took the 50cc (4-6) win, while Walker best the 50cc (7-8) horde.
