Racetown Marek, Lavorci Zip, Zap and Wrap It Up By BOB ALLOY ADELANTO. CA. SEPT. 14 Adelanto's motocross course IS now "Racetown," and it has new owners and a new track layout. Fifty-six ROTMX members, along with 17 L.A. guests and support racers, tumed out to share a great day of racing. Mike Biddenmeier shot out to the early Amateurs Over 40 lead. but he was soon threatened by an uncomfortably close Mike Marek. Biddenmeier managed to hold Marek back until lap three. Marek then made his attack and zapped past and zipped ahead, leading all four remaining laps, with Biddenmeier trailing him in. Joe Osteen did some fast cranking after his midpack start and finished third. and Richard Lamis crossed over in fourth. Moto two was a bit delayed because Eric Alloy couldn't start his Yamaha four-stroke. The more he tried, things only worsened. Luckily, Cleyon Loonsfoot came to the rescue with his never-failing, powerful four-strokestarting right leg and had the bike going in no time. and the moto began at last. Events went well for Marek, and once again he had unbeatable speed, leading lap after lap and wrapping up another top-place finish. Mike McKay had great power and ran a good race. scoring second. Good starts weren't part of Osteen's day, but he more than compensated once again, with a speedy third-place take Michael Mosca secured fourth Randy Valles lore out from the start and led fellow his Novice Over 40 racers for two laps. A fast Greg Landers squeezed his Yamaha past and held back 12 other Novices all the way to win his number-one status. Vin Curek impressively worked his way through the pack and collected runner-up honors. Chris Dysart fired in with third. followed by Valles. Curek upped his speed and beat Landers to the finish in the second event. Mark T oguchi was on fast track too and followed Landers in with third, and Valles picked up fourth. Jimmy Lavorci had the track figured out well. Hitting all the right lines and ripping along at super speeds, he had a perfect set of top honors in Amateur Over 50 class. Dennis Tooman won two powerful second spots, and Tim Cash took both third-place finishes. Fourth and fifth were won, respectively, by Bruce Hoover and Frank Derby in mota one and Ted Jenkins and Hoover in mota two. Nice double jumps and top speeds earned Paul Leos first-place bragging rights in the Novice Over 50 class in both motos. Paul Benedict crossed over with second place in both motos, and an always-fast John Webb added two more third-place finishes to his collection. Battle in Bell Buckle Castleman Cinches the Bell Buckle Win By JEFFREY KETCHUM BELL BUCKLE, TN, SEPT. 15 The Mid-South Summer Youth Camp Series came to an end with the last round in historic Bell Buckle, Tennessee. The weather was perfect for the 45 youths that showed up. The Mini course was a quarter of a mile long, and it made an oval around a woods patch before coming through the scoring area. Cory Rion took the holeshot and was able to hold on to the lead for the entire race. On the first lap, Rion was followed by Dillan Hamilton and Anthony Ferguson. Bobby Brown passed Ferguson on the second lap for second place. The order stayed the same until the sixth lap, when Brown Holden took fourth place from Ferguson. The top five finishers were Rion, Hamilton, Brown, Holden and Ferguson. "The track was very good," Rion stated. The Intermediate, 70cc Four-Stroke and Junior course was about three-quarters of a mile long and consisted of a winding grasstrack with a short loop through the woods. The Intermediate race started with Moose/ Alpinestars/Pireili/Factory Effexbacked Justin Conners getting the holeshot, with Travis Rowland and Trent Hayes following. Conners held on for the lead while Rowland and Hayes battled it out for second and third. On the fifth lap, Dan Taylor was able to pass B.J. Wood for fourth place. Conners, Rowland, Hayes, Tayior and Wood were the top five finishers. The 70cc Four-Stroke race got off to a great start. John Bolton got the holeshot, followed by Isaac Merritt and Caleb Doores. Bolton led for the first four laps but crashed on lap five and dropped to fifth place. Bolton was able to work his way back up the pack to third place by the eighth lap. Rounding out the top five were Merritt, Doores, Bolton, Chandler Gaw and Cody Sharpton. The Junior race was an exciting one, with Chaz Green taking the holeshot and Robert Castleman following right behind him, The Junior riders were riding fast and furious on this day, which made scoring a little tricky on the first couple of laps, but things worked themselves out. Castleman was able to get around Green for first place. It was a close finish, with Castleman getting first, followed by Green. Jesse Maupin, Dustin Smith and Beau Nicewinter rounded out the top five. All the youth wanted to thank the promoters for putting on the race. They are all looking forward to the start of the second annual Mid-South Championship Youth Series, which starts October 6 in Greenville, Kentucky. It looks like it's going to be another exciting season. Battle in Bell Buckle Bell Buckle. Tennessee Results. September 15, 2002 (Round 8 of 8) MINI: I. Cory Rion (Hus): 2. Dillan Hamilton (ATK); 3. By BRAD LETCHER SIOUX FALLS, SD, SEPT, 21 One thing that goes great with the sizzling action of South Dakota short-track racing is some Freys. Daddy ·Safety" Dave Frey brought a couple of his small Freys, Drew and Dean, to the latest evening of races at Saddleback Race Park in Sioux Falls. The Freys take on the competition in several different classes, and sometimes even race against each other. On this night. Drew took on the Mini 50cc B class, "Deano" raced the Mini 60cc class, and the two ganged up to take on the Mini 70cc A, Daddy Frey took on the big boys in the Open A class. Drew "Fritzi" Frey was the first to take to the track as the combined Mini 50cc A and Mini 50cc B classes lined up, The holeshot went to A rider Dillon Miles, followed closely by a trio of ·sevens" - B riders Fritzi (7F), Presley Bott (7X) and Chris Christianson (7). Fritzi hounded Miles for the lead. While Bott was searching for a way into the B-c1ass lead, Cole Gustafson passed Christianson into third. Kayla White passed Christianson for fourth on the next lap. Miles controlled the lead while Fritzi, Bott and White tried to keep pace. Miles took the checkers for the A·class win, followed by B-class winner Fritzi, Bott, Gustafson, White and Christianson. XR pilot Deano Frey was ready to take on the two-stroke crowd in the Mini 60cc class. A bone-stock XR70 shouldn't be able to keep up with the ultraquick 60cc two-strokes, but this one is ridden by a Frey. Local ace Alex Jorgensen snatched the holes hot, in front of Deano, Miles, Chase Castle and Samantha Brinkman, all close. After one lap, Miles began to have trouble and dropped to fifth. Jor- Saddleback Race Park: Riley Johnson (27) leads Gerod Olivier (2), Matt Trabing (832). Travis Degen (815) and Tony Sutter (11X) in the Small Engine class in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. On lap four, Miles pulled off the track with a fouled plug. Deano ended up in the marbles after going in a little too hot. dropping to fourth, behind Brinkman. Jorgensen finished first, followed by Castle, Brinkman, Deano and Kyle Kirlin. Deana and Fritzi paired up in the Mini 70cc A class. Deana won overall and Fritzi placed fifth. Daddy Frey contested the Open A class. Cody Miles shot into the lead. in front of heat winner Mike Robbins, Devin Wenz and Dustin Johnson. Points leader Rick Wagner was mired back in fifth, just ahead of Frey. Any of the top seven riders had a chance at the lead. Wagner started a march toward the front, first passing Johnson, and then Wenz and Robbins on lap three. Now in second, Wagner started to work on the leader, Miles, Meanwhile, Frey had moved up to fifth, while Johnson pulled off the track, Wagner snagged the lead just past midway. Miles was second, ahead of Robbins, Wenz and Frey, and that's how they finished, Results MINI 50 A: I. OUlon Miles (Yam). MINI 50 B: 1. DrN Frey (Hon): 2. Presley Bolt (Hon); 3. Second Creek Raceway Bravo Magnifico! By SHARON JYlAm..AND AND JIM BREWER DENVER, CO, SEPT. 15 Going into the eighth MRA race, the current points leader in the Twin Peaks Powersports Supertwins GTO class was Jon Glaefke. followed closeiy by Pedro Bravo. The two have been battling it out all season, trading wins. and with the season winding down, every point is critical. Off the line, Glaefke nailed the holeshot with his very fast Suzuki TL-R, with Bravo, on his Bimota SB8R, and Jim Brewer, on another TL-R, close behind. The current third-place rider, Dwayne Shawver, suffered a heartbreaking clutch-rod failure on the warm-up lap and failed to make the start. This handed Doug cue' • Lyle a solid fourth-place position in the race and in the points. From the beginning, Bravo was on Glaefke like white on rice, using the brakes to suck up any ground lost on the straights. With Brewer a lonely third, the battle for fourth heated up, with Lyle and David Gossett dicing it out; Lyle got the better of the situation, retaining fourth. When lapped traffic became an issue on lap six, Giaefke was held up slightly exiting the 88 tum, and Bravo saw an opportunity in the making. On the penultimate lap, that opportunity presented itself, Coming down the hill into turn four, Glaefke encountered a backmarker in a very precarious part of the track. Anticipating that the lapped rider would stay to the inside of the left-hander, Glaefke used the power of his TL-R to drive around the outside of the backmarker. Unfortunately for Glaefke, the lapper ran wide to set up for the comer, pinched him off, and opened up a hole for Bravo, who took both riders in one braking move up the inside. Glaefke wasn't able to make up this lost ground after the white flag, giving Bravo a well· earned win. In the Race Of The Rockies, Ricky Orlando took the holeshot, followed by Dan Turner, Travis Graham and Doug Vickery. The pace was hot. Graham pushed the front just a little too much and low-sided going into tum four, giVing third place to Vickery. Staying in front, Orlando heid off Turner for the first lap, Tumer showed Orlando a wheel going into the last tum, and again going onto the front straight. On the second lap, Orlando overshot the exit from the rat's nest. Turner took advantage of the opportunity and made the pass. Orlando dogged T umer, trying to get the lead back, but Turner, on an Rl, outpowered Orlando's GSX-R750, Tumer spread out the lead on the straightaways, while Orlando made up ground on the corners. Rob Christman moved up through the field to take over fourth place, behind Mike Applegate. Christman, back from his AJI\A National tour, took over third place at the halfway nag, and Applegate moved back behind Ryan Burke. Despite Orlando's great effort, Tumer took the checkered nag for the win and extended his lead in the Race Of The Rockies division. Results ROTR: I. Dan Turner (Yam): 2. Ricky Orlando (Sur); 3.
