No One's Dabless in Madras Cuw Things went well for most of the riders until they were caught off guard by tricky, loose sand in section six. "We had a lot of riders being thrown to the ground," Fisher said. "Une one (contested by the Expert riders) was one of the toughest, more challenging lines we've come up with. Most of the riders felt that this was one of the better events of the series. It's a really good event for me when no one cleans all of the sections." Don Richardson, a seasoned Trials competitor, had things going his way the first two loops while contesting the Premier Lightweight Intermediate class. Richardson's first two loops ended with only two points lost, although he dropped nine points on the third loop while contesting the number-two line. Richardson finished the day with an II-point loss, although he still topped the class overall, as Harold Heitmiller (21) and Jim Cole (45) were his next-closest competitors. Modem Classic Novice competitor Dangermond, who had the day's lowest tally, dropped only seven points (5-1-1) on the day while using the number-three line - this coming after also winning the class at last year's event. John Laughlin (14) and Tom Ownes, perhaps best known for his motocross prowess, trailed Dangermond in the final tabulations. Owens had a feel for the course on the third and final loop, zeroing the nine-section loop and finishing the day with 17 points dropped. Washington's Neil Giertsen was the top performer in the Modem Classic Intermediate class. In what was Giertsen's second event in that classification, the Montesa-mounted rider lost only nine points, besting fellow Evergreen State riders Dana Salsman and Price. Nordstrom led the way in the Modern Classic Expert class, edging Trevorrow (by a single point) and Scott Stewart. liGHT MADRAS, OR, OCT. 5 The final scores were indicative of just how tough the final round of the Powroll/AHRMA Northwest Regional Trials Series was, as AHRMA course marshal Pete Fisher and his crew set up one of the most challenging courses contested this season in the canyons of central Oregon. Nobody zeroed the course this year, and the lowest of all of the day's scores were a seven and two nines, all coming in the Modem Classic class. Very few of the contestants - who came from as far away as Canada and Southern California - zeroed the sections. The exceptions were Neal Trevorrow, Monty Price, Tom Owens, Steve Mitchell, Greg Salsman, Ken Burningham and Don Richardson, all of whom were successful in one of their three loops of the nine-section course. Burningham, who made the trek from British Columbia, Canada, piloted his 1958 Greeves 200cc Scottish to a win in the Premier Lightweight class, using scores of 5-5-0 (10) while contesting the number-two line on the four· line course. Only three others had lower tallies: Modem Classic Expert-class winner Gary Nordstrom and Modern Classic Intermediate Neil Salsman, both with nine points lost, and Modern Classic Novice-class winner Randy Dangermond, with seven. The toughest sections, according to the majority of the riders, were sections seven and eight. The Beginner riders were excluded from even attempting the sections, as both were strewn with rocks, made addWonally treacherous by heavily watered areas and a muddy stream crossing, which was quite a change for the summerlike conditions. (The weather was a balmy 77 degrees on the day of the event.) Willow Creek Motocross Park: Riding a 1958 Greeves, Canada's Ken Burningham dropped only 10 points en route to the Premier Lightweight Expert-class win at the final round of the AHRMA Northwest Regional Trials Series, held in Madras, Oregon. 64 OCTOBER 23, 2002' a U a I u Results: October 5, 2002 (Final Roundl MORN CLSC BEG: I. AHRMA Northwestern Regional Post-Vintage Series Round 8: Willow Creek Motocross Park Price is Right On! AHRMA Northwest Regional Trials Series Final Round: Willow Creek Motocross Park By Willow Creek Motocross Park Madras. Oregon n u _ s By ClAY liGHT MADRAS, OR, OCT. 6 Washington's Monty Price dominated the PostVintage portion of the Madras Motorcycle Days Vintage Motocross weekend at Willow Creek Motocross Park, site of the penultimate round of the Northwest Maico & CZ/The Motoweb.com Northwestern Regional PostVintage Series. Riding a C&J-framed Yamaha 500, Price won every moto he entered on the day; despite incredibly tough competition from Oregon's Jim Row. Price was the cream of the crop in the Gran Prix and newly implemented Ultima classes. AHRMA Post~Vintage director AI Wenzel made the trek up from the Bay Area to oversee the day's racing and was pleased to see just how much the Post-Vintage classes have progressed in the Northwest in a little over two years. Row, who has made a name for himself while contesting the majority of the AHRMA Nationals this season, gave Price all he could handle in the first of the two Post-Vintage program classes. Although both riders were contesting two separate classes, Row, riding a 1977 Husqvama 360, stayed glued to Price's rear wheel for much of the moto before his chain broke and he recorded a DNF. This allowed Californian Matt Itamura, who was piloting a sano Maico, to move into the number-two position, some] 6 seconds back of Ultima-class winner Price, and Itamura maintained that spot to the finish to garner a win in the adjoined Over 40 Post-Vintage Intermediate class. Price darted ahead of the massive field of riders at the unleashing of mota two, trailed by Itamura and Row. Then Row quickly displaced Itamura and set off to chase down Price, even sticking a wheel under the Yamaha rider at one point. Row's lead, though, lasted less than a second, as Price kept the throttle pinned and from that point would not again be challenged. Row again developed mechanical problems and could only watch from a distance as Price padded his lead with each circuit of the Troy and Chris Neimann-designed course. Mer Row's demise, Keith Geddis, an Ultima Intermediate-class contestant, would be Price's closest competition, although Geddis would trail Price by some 22 seconds at the finish. Donnie Wilson, riding a Dick Mann· framed, Honda-powered machine (one of only 200 produced) finished third (for an Ultimaclass sweep), behind winner Price and Geddis but ahead of another of the many Maico riders on hand, Kenny Geddis. Itamura and Washington's Christopher James, the top rider in the Historic class, rounded out the top six in the 22-rider field. Price poured it on in the first combined Gran Prix 250/500cc moto, having only Itamura to contend with as the field quickly spread out. Price left Itamura in the dust, though, as, after two laps, the rider from Longview, Washington, had clicked off a successive string of nearly perfect laps, leaving Itamura to fend off the likes of Bill Grubin and James, both of whom were vying for the top position in the 250cc Intermediate class - a position that would ultimately go to James, who trailed both Price and ltamura at mota's end. It was that familiar yellow Yamaha of Price at the front of the pack in the day's final moto, although this time a new face would maintain the number-two position to the finish. Maico rider Marvin Newton put in a good performance while holding Montesa-mounted Bill Allaro at bay. Price's win was good for an overall win in the Gran Prix 500cc Expert class, while Newton (in the 500cc Intermediate class), Allaro (in the Over 50 Post-Vintage Novice class), CZ rider Don Matthews, Grub!n and Dale Stevens rounded out the top six. Matthews prevailed in the Post-Vintage program's largest class, the Gran Prix 250cc Intermediates, after beating Grubin and James to the finish line and take a 3-1 win, aboard his CZ Falta Replica. Newton, who trailed Price in mota two, used a 3-1 tally to win the Gran Prix 500cc Intermediate class, beating fellow Maico riders J.R. Cunningham (2-2) and Itamura (1-3).
