Round 8: Douglas County Fairgrounds RMXA/AMA District 25 Summer Series Karlsen, Flesia, Boyel Double Down at Douglas Cody Boyd (424) took three wins, in the Schoolboy, 125cc Band Non-Pro classes. By JOHN CLIFFORD PHOTOS BY DALE WINCZEWSKI/ MX PHOTOGRAPHY CASTI.E ROCK, CO, SEPT. 28 he first motorcycle event ever held at the luxurious new arena at the Douglas County Fairgrounds in Castle Rock, Colorado, was round eight of the AdrenalX RMXA/AMA District 25 Championships, and the mountains rang with the sweet sounds of Supercross and Freestyle. More than 3100 spectators and 467 racers jammed the arena to see racing, MotoXXX Freestyle exhibition, the Hooters Girls of Fort Collins, and Team Dirty Girls' Dawn, making for a first-class show. MotoXXX jumper Shaun Nielsen and Colorado's own IFMA competitors Chris Dennison and Darin Con net brought the fans to their feet with a half-time exhibition of aerobatics freestyling. This year's AdrenalX Racing Against Arthritis event raised $935 for the local chapter's Mountain Plains branch, plus $75 for the Clayton Memorial fund. Colorado Powersports/Cortez Auto Transport's Matt Karlsen captured two titles, in the American Furniture Warehouse 250cc Pro and Twin Air/Boyesen Open Pro classes. Shawn Morgan of Vickery Motorsports took home the Hooters of Fort Collins 125cc Pro purse and won the Over 25 Pro class. Cody Boyd grabbed 125cc B, Schoolboy and Non-Pro honors, while Mini sensation Chris Flesia doubled up in the 85cc (14-15) class and the loaded Supermini class. With excellent weather, a free RMXA Ice Cream Feast, and the Clayton Memorial Horseshoe Contest, there was plenty to enjoy during the Cortez Auto Transport Summer Series' eighth round, which was also the Bridgestone/Team Dirty T (Above left) Matt Karlsen topped the 25Gec Pro and Open Pro classes at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, site of round eight of the RMXAlAMA District 25 Summer Series. Girls/LSE Racing AdrenalX Supercross RMXA/AMA District 25 Championship. HEI Construction's track layout made for fast 38-second lap times on the sandy, rutty, rough supercross track, much like Daytona. Douglas County Sand and Gravel's donation of loamy dirt put smiles on all the riders' faces. The fabulous Two Rivers Racing crew handled the capacity racing, and free stuff was handed out until the Capco Tile custom trophies, Bridgestone hats and Twin Air products ran out. Other major sponsors included Dal- Tile, Interstate Honda, X-Trade Repairs, Skoprbordz, Wiseco, Rio Grande Mexican Restaurants, Grand Drywall, Colorado Powersports, WRP, Ridley Motorcycles, Bent, Mountain Motorcycles, Xtreme Performance Center, Hampton Inn of Castle Rock, Daily Star, Fay Myers, Go Fast, Advo-care Systems, and Red Beard Trucking. Chris Flesia started his winning ways in the morning program with two excellent starts and two moto wins. His victory at night in the Superminis was even more impressive. Zach Larson of Franktown, Colorado, won the first moto. Flesia gated fourth, passed Aaron McClintock in the Warp Speed whoops and outjumped last year's champ, Kyle Cohrs, at the MotoXXX Monster Leap to move to second by the conclusion. Flesia won the second moto to take the overall. Larson followed Cohrs for four of the six laps but jumped deep into the Pro Circuit Pounders and floated by for second overall. Cohrs was third, and McClintock and Brett Preuss rounded out the top five. Top Colorado Pro rider Shawn Morgan hooked the 125cc and Over 25 Pro Wes In Castle Rock, Colorado. Cody Boyd of Aurora, Colorado, mixed it up with Wyoming's Tony Valdez and Joey Shedron of Uttleton for the 125cc B title. Valdez won the first moto on his Yamaha but finished eighth in the second outing for fourth overall. Joy Hawkins took his Honda to second in moto one but was trafficjammed to sixth in moto two. Shedron was pinned back in fifth in the first moto but broke free in moto two with an early move on the HRP Sports Rockers for second overall. Boyd rocketed out of the gate in moto two, made an inside move in the whoops and pushed his Suzuki to victory. Karlsen ruled the Pros, despite vigilant opposition - and having just removed a cast from his wrist. "I'm glad I called the promoter [to inquire about] track conditions," Karlsen said. "When he said it was sandy, like Daytona, I cut it [the cast] off. I like that kind of track." Morgan took second, behind Karlsen, in the 250cc Pro class but captured the Hooters of Fort Collins 125cc Pro-class win and also won the Over 25 Pro title. Teen sensation Doug Leavitt was the 125cc Pro runner-up, and placed fifth in the Open Pro class and sixth in the 250cc Pro class. One of the classiest racers in all of Colorado, the Pro Women's champion, Glad Umbaugh, took an amazing fifth in the 250cc B class. Ashli Hoiland wrapped up the Women's C title before a bad crash over the MotoXXX Monster Leap while racing the boys left her with a possible wrist injury. Six Douglas County Fairgrounds employees were competing on the day. Mechanic Kris Johnson placed second overall in the Vet C class. eN 50 (7·8): I. Austin Keller; 2. Garrett Kite; 3. Vernon Oshea; 4.
