Glen Helen Raceway Park Marino, Musgrave Mangle 'em at REM MX By ROCKY HASH SAN BERNARDINO, CA, SEPT. 21 With summer temperatures closing in on the century mark, a large contingent of racers turned out for Racing Enterprises Motorsports' weekly Saturday motocross and prOVided some heat of their own on the racetrack with many tight racing battles. in the 80cc Beginner class, Billy Musgrave took home the first-place brass on the day with a pair of fine moto wins aboard hjs Yamaha YZ85. Musgrave led every lap of both motos and never made a mistake as he took the checkered flag each time out without much fanfare. Justin Tucker put in a couple of solid second-place rides, which resulted in second overall on the day. Eli Kukla and Jason Ramsey vied for the third-place honors after lengthy battles in both motos. When the dust settled, it was Ramsey (4-3) finishing up in third overall after he got the best of it in the second moto, while Kukla (3-4) finished up in fourth. Brad Pappalardo came in fifth with his 6-5 rides on the day. In the very competitive Over 40 Junior division, Bob Marino appeared to be a bit much for his competition. as he stormed to two runaway moto wins to earn the overall class win. Marino took both holeshots and romped to victory each time out. There was some intense racing behind him. however, as the 16 other competitors argued in close quarters all day long. Brian Pappalardo got good starts in each moto aboard his Kawasaki KX 125 and then rode at a pace that saw the rest of the pack unable to find a way around him. Eventually, Pappalardo tumed a solid 3-2 score into second overall on the day. Frank Emerson put in a strong second moto aboard his KTM SX 250, and his 6-3 tally was good for third overall. LK Performance rider Leonard Kirschner tumed in consistent 5-5 rides, and he was rewarded with fourth overall for his efforts. Bobby Hunt filled out the top five slots after putting up a 4- 7 on the scoreboard. In Vet Beginner competition, Damon Dunaway took home the overall honors after posting a 1-2 overall score. Tim Dollison won the second moto, but his third in the first moto relegated him to second overall for the day. Mike Kruger finished up in third place with his 4-3 efforts, while Russell Brown (5-5) was fourth and Cam Cameron (7-6) was fifth. Vincent Rhoads bested the 250cc Intermediates with an unbeatable 1- I tally on the day. Honda rider Jason Lentz chased him to the flag both times out aboard his Honda CRF450R for second overall, while Brandon Woods filled out the top three slots with a 3-4 showing for the day. Los Angeles County Raceway No Stopping Those Norrs By GREG ROBERTSON PALMDALE, CA, SEPT. 21 The Honda-mounted brother act of Garrett and Chris Norr proved to be just too much for the competition, as they easily walked away with wins in the 125cc Novice and Intermediate classes, respectively, at Los Angeles County Raceway during the Starcycle-sponsored round of Califomia Racing Club's Saturday night motocross. Garrett Norr's dominance of the 125cc Novices was evident right from the drop of the gate, as he put his Nationwide Cycle/Answer/ N-Style-backed CR125 into an immediate lead. By lap two, Norr had a comfortable 10-second advantage on David Robertson, who was being hounded by Ryan Alexy. Then Alexy found a way around Robertson and set out after Norr, only to go down a short time later and finish an eventual seventh. Norr's lead increased to some 25 seconds over Robertson by the time the checkers flew. Anatol Koslowski crossed the line for third, followed by Tanner Alexander and Matthew Jones. Alexy emerged with the second-moto holeshot. His lead lasted a handful of turns before Norr was running out front. Norr improved on his first-moto performance by totally destroying the competition to the tune of a half-minute lead during the relatively short race, Second place was all Alexy's, which gave him fourth overall on the night. Robertson and Alexander had a great battle over third place, in which Robertson prevailed to earn the second-place trophy. Alexander's consistent 4-4 rides topped the 7-2 score of Alexy for third overall. In 125cc Intermediate first-moto action, Ryan Happy absconded with the holeshot over Matthew Williams, Chris Non and Jason Jeffrey. Norr wasted little time making his way Glen Helen Raceway Partt: Brian Pappalardo (90) passes Tom Flynn (733G) in Over 40 Junior action In San Bernardino, California. Norr put a couple of seconds per lap on the field en route to his seemingly easy win. Garrett Eberle suffered a last-place start but quickly went to work on his competition and climbed all the way to second place by moto's end. Jeffrey hung around for a close third, ahead of Williams and Darin Chisholm. Moto two was a duplicate of the first, as Happy's early lead was quickly swallowed up by Norr. And, just as in the first moto, Norr motored away uncontested for a sweep of the class. Eberle got a slightly better start this time out and would again finish in second place. Jeffrey overcame a first-turn fall and the resulting iast-place start to charge through the field for another third, followed by Kyle Jones and Happy. Montreal, Quebec, Olympic Stadium Roy Rules, Lange at Last By AWSON KENNEDY MONTREAL, QC, CANADA, SEPT. 21 Jean-Sebastien Roy took the win for the second consecutive year at the Motocross ValvoJine de Montreal. The two-time Canadian National Champion grabbed the holeshot and never looked back, riding another strong race in front of his hometown Quebec crowd and taking the win easily in front of more than 60,000 fans. Roy shared the podium with a pair of Yamaha of Troy riders; Ivan Tedesco finished second and Josh Hansen took third. While Roy led from start to finish, the 250cc race had some great midpack battles. Roy's teammate Blair Morgan also got a great start, running in second for the early part of the race. Tedesco and Hansen were third and fourth off the line and kept with the pace from the beginning.
