take the class win. National number four, Jason Northrup, finished fourth, with Chris Meyer claiming fifth. Harold Waddell was a double winner, taking the 600cc Four-Stroke and 750cc Expertclass wins on his Triumph twins. Tuscarawas County Fairgrounds Track Sellards, Kelley Take Hometown Race By RUPERT X. Dickeyville Hillclimb Mueller Mauls 'em By BUD NORTHRUP DICKEYVILLE, WI, SEPT. 15 Clay Wilwert has done an outstanding job of improving the infamous 500-foot hill outside DickeYVille, Wisconsin, actually making it possibie to run two hills at the same time. The 2003 National Amateur Hillclimb Championships will be hosted by Wilwert's HarleyDavidson, and will utilize that two-hill format. It should be very entertaining. The last Dickeyville climb of 2002 was held on September 15, with Lloyd Mueller from Kewaskum, Wisconsin, posting the fastest ride of the day. Riding his beautiful Harley-Davidson, and fresh from winning the 2002 National Championship in the Open class, Mueller came from behind to win the Open class at Dickeyville. Todd Clpala had set the first-round fast time for the class (and overall) at 10.13 seconds on his hot Harley, while Mueller was hot on his heels with a 10.38-second run. In the second round, however, Mueller chose a new line up the hill and really made it work, posting a 9.97-second run. Cipala crashed at 395 feet on a full-throttle attack, irying to overtake Mueller, and had to settle for second place. In the King Of The Hill Dash For Cash, Mueller and Cipala again emerged at the top. Cipala carded an exceptional 9.78-second time. but Mueller wasn't to be denied - he delivered an unbelievable ride, roaring over the top in an astounding 9.05 seconds to take the King Of The Hill money as well as the overall Fast Time award. Cipala still had a good day for himself. however, as he came from behind for the win in the 750cc Novice class. Tom Daniels had set the first-round time at 11.38 seconds on his Kawi triple, and Cipala posted a 11.68-second run on his triple. In the second round, Kaleb Northrup flew his triple over the top In 11 seconds flat to take the class lead. Daojels crashed trying to overtake Northrup, and all waited for Cipala to come to the line. Cipala was late coming, as he had to change rear wheels from his KX500 to the triple (he'd flattened the triple's tire), but the work paid off for him, as he carded a 10.66-second run to a U a PEuErr DOVER, OH, SEPT. 16 Locally based out of New Philadelphia, both Red Bull KTM team rider Brock Sellards and Buckeye Cycle Supply/Fly Racewear-backed Tom Kelley decided to take in a little "faircross" action in Dover, which was pretty close to home and which presented an opportunity to make a few bucks while racing in front of some home· brewed fans. The event was round 25 of the Ohio County Fairs Motocross Championship Series. Sellards, who recently signed with Yamaha of Troy for 2003, will be on the blue bikes come AMA Supercross time, but on this night he was aboard his trusty orange KTMs. Kelley, a very fast privateer who races wherever and whenever he can, intends on jumping back into the feisty National Arenacross Series and competing in the small arenas. Also joining in the fray were Team Green hero Gavin "Speedy G" Gracyk and fair-race regular Dickie Hoy. In the 125cc Pro class, Sellards used a quick start on his KTM SX 125 to take the lead and win big, while Kelley and Gracyk tangled over second. with Kelley ultimately taking the position at the checkers. The 250cc Money class featured some heroics from Kelley. Though the "Brockster" took the holeshot, Kelley was able to take over first and hang on for the win, with Gracyk third on his Kawasaki and Hoy in fourth aboard his Buckeye Powersports-backed CRF450R. Rounding out the top five was Westerville's Shaun Kuchler, who was also the victor of the 16-24 division. Brewster's A.J. Hattery had a fine evening in Dover. He topped the Schoolboy class on his RM 125 and finished a strong second, behind Kevin Ott, in the 125cc B class. The 250cc B class was owned by Dover's own Brian Beaber, on his RM250. Strongsville's strongman Michael Blauman snatched the first-place trophy in the Mini Junior class. Vermilion's Logan Karnow stole the show in the 50cc (7-8) division; the KTM racer bested Polini rider Zach Knotts in second and Ethan Scarberry in third. 50: I. ZlIchary Noga: 2. David Jude: 3. OCTOBER 16,2002' SPOKANE, WA, SEPT. 20-21 The IFMA Clear Channel Freestyle Motocross tour stopped in Spokane, Washington, and all the regular stars were in attendance to do battle. The soil was a little soft, making for different conditions, but it wasn't really a problem after Answer's Jesse Olsen did a bunch of no-handed landers. Friday night started out with Beau Bamberg qualifying in the number-one position. Rookie Adam Jones completed a run good enough to qualify for the final but wanted to give the crowd one last freebie. Jones ended up crashing hard while doing a Tsunami Kiss of Death, but he was okay. and he finished out the night in seventh. KTM's ·Cowboy' Kenny Bartram came out swinging with a good, solid run, looking like he is back and healthy. Thor's Dustin Miller is the reigning IFMA champion, and he wants to hold on to the crown as long as he can. This day would show Miller's determination, as he came out hot, pulling off huge tricks into no-hander landers almost every time he jumped. Miller took the hot seat, with only Fox's Bamberg left. Bamberg's run was nothing short of great, but in the judges' eyes it wasn't enough to overtake Miller for the win. On Saturday night, Target rider Nate Adams got into the mix after a disappointing performance the previous night. The previous week's winner, Drake McElroy, also stepped it up the second time around with his signature Corpse Air trick. Arizona's Robert Distler would again throw out crazy combos like Double McMetz and Triple Saran Wraps, only to be scored low again. This night was Miller's time: He won, and is closing in on Bartram's points lead. Bartram now holds a 32-point lead over Miller. With seven contests left and Bartram still coming back from an injury, Miller could catch up and hold on to his number-one plate. 600 NOV: 1. Kirk Mueller (Kaw); 2. Emle Beckwith (Hon); 3. For the second week in a row, Northern California's Bryan Yarrow took the honors on the Handicap side of the program. The first Scratch semi saw Costa Mesa points leader Josh Larsen with the win and the transfer to the main. "Fast' Ed Castro got home second, and that was good enough to get him a spot. Andy "The Enforcer' Northrup and Shawn "Mad Dog' McConnell would get one more crack in the last-chance qualifier. It was all Bobby "Boogaloo' Schwartz in the second semi, and moving to the main with him was Brant. Randy "The Rocket' DiFrancesco and Dukie Ermolenko were headed for the LCQ. The pole went to McConnell as they lined up for the LCQ. DiFrancesco was in two, with Ermolenko and Northrop in three and four. It was over as soon as the gate came up. McConnell on the pole is a deadly combination, and he proved it by taking the lead and the win. He would be the final rider in the Scratch majn. They came to the line to draw for starting positions for the Scratch main. The pole went to Larsen, with Castro in two and Schwartz in three. On the outside were McConnell and Brant. Brant took aim at the first comer and when the flag came up he dropped the hammer and got out ahead of Larsen, who locked in behind him. Larsen kept sliding up under Brant, hoping to move him off the groove, but the young man from Riverside was not having any and the win was his. Larsen would have to settle for second. On back, it was McConnell, Schwartz and Castro. The Handicap main had John DeFries on the lO-yard line, Yarrow on the 20, Ermolenko and Northrup on the 30, McConnell and Castro on the 40, and Larsen and Brant on the 50. Northrup was the first fatality, as he grenaded a piston in the LCQ and was done for the night. One lap was in the books when DeFries went down and Ermolenko laid his bike down to keep from hitting him. A single-file restart was called, with DeFries on the penalty line. Yarrow was in the lead, and once there, he is very hard to get around, and he kept the field at bay. Ermolenko came away with second, with McConnell, Larsen and Brant rounding out the field. The Jones boys, Chris and Danny, took the Sidecar main, leading from start to finish. Scott Cole and Chris Sears got close a couple of times but had to settle for second. Mike Fontaine and Mark Adams were third. The Support main was "survival of the fittest.' They finally called it quits on the fourth restart. Rod Lenz was the only one who didn't take a soil sample. John Stunkard and Billy Braden were second and third. Results SCR: I. Scott Brant (GM); 2. Josh Larsen (Jaw); 3. Shawn McConnell (GM): 4. Bobby Schwertz (Jaw); 5. Ed Cestro (GM). HDCP: I.
