Demuth made his move at the halfway point and faced the challenge of cutting 'away at Pecsok's lead, which was close to four seconds. When the white flag came out, only a bike length separated Pecsok and Demuth. Coming out of the woods before the finish, Demuth made the pass on Pecsok to take the moto win in come-from-behind fashion. "There was a big sand corner to the left," Demuth said of his last-lap heroics, "and we [he and PecsokJ were both riding really hard. He went in and kind of got stuck in the berm and I got a really good drive going down the straightaway. I jumped by him on a little jump and went to the inside of the following corner and made the pass stick. It was kind of one of those last-lap, last-corner deals. The DeCoster's Kids program raised more than $29,000 on the weekend for their drug-awareness program that uses motocross as a tool to encourage kids to say "no" to drugs. The 2002 Arenacross Champion, Josh Demuth, left on Sunday with four moto wins in four attempts to pick up first overall in the 125cc and 250cc Expert classes. Demuth faced some fast riders all over the nation, including Kevin Windham, on his way to victory. Other big winners included the Alessi brothers, Mike and Jeff, who brought home four overalls between them, as well as Jacob Turbyfill and Caleb Dowell, who battled all weekend for the top spots in the 50cc and 65cc classes. Sunday's 125cc Expert contest provided one of the most exciting races of the weekend. When the gate dropped for the first moto, J.J. Pecsok took the holeshot, ahead of his Honda of Houston teammate Ty Conner and Yamaha-mounted Vernon McKiddie. Demuth moved into fourth by the second lap and went after McKiddie, but he couldn't work his way around the Fly Racing/Smithsponsored rider until the fourth lap. Pecsok was trying to run away from 58 OCTOBER 9, 2002' cue • way I rode, but I made the passes when I should have, and I am really happy that I came away with the moto win after the start I got." Chad Ward of Falkville, Alabama, came away with the lead after the start of the second moto, ahead of James Marshall, Conner and Demuth. Demuth made his passes on Conner and Marshall early, moving into the runner-up spot by the end of the third lap. Pecsok found himself recovering from a slow start and was forced to work his way through the field. At the halfway point, Demuth put his Yamaha YZ250F into the lead, only to have Ward come right back around him. Demuth made the pass one more time on Ward, this time making it stick. At the finish, it was Demuth with the 1-1 sweep, ahead of Ward and Conner. Marshall finished fourth, ahead of Pecsok. With Demuth taking first overall, second went to Conner (3-3), ahead of Pecsok (2-5). Marshall picked up fourth. Rhode Island's Austin Squires edged out Ward for fifth overall, as 12th-place finish in the first moto kept Ward outside the top five overall. "I want to thank Yamaha Shogun Motorsports, Motion Cyclesports, Thor, Universal, Dunlop, EVS and Factory Effex," Demuth said after a perfect day in both classes. "I am going to Tyler next weekend for the Pro Challenge, and after that the U.S. Open, where we will be racing both the 250cc and Four-Stroke classes. After that, I will be back to defend my Arenacross title. We have picked up a few new sponsors: We have Yamaha support and we have great bikes for next year. I am really looking forward to it." Jacob Turbyfill came away with a big win in the Super Teeny Mini (6-9) class. Turbyfill battled all weekend long with fellow Texan Caleb Dowell for the title of "fastest 50 in the state." Turbyfill, sponsored by Factory Cobra, No Fear, JM Racing and Spy, picked up wins in the Teeny Mini (7-8) Stock and Super Teeny Mini (6-9) classes, trading moto wins with Dowell. The Team Green/LCS Racing/TH Racing-sponsored Dowell picked up several victories throughout the weekend, including wins in the Teeny Mini (7-8) Modified, Mini Mini (6-8) Stock and (6-8) Modified classes. eN Maler Velley USA EII....
