CMC Trans-Cal Series, Pacific Northwest Region Round 2: Albany Motorsports Park Local Yamaha rider Matt Wilson put in two strong performances to garner second overall to the dominant Hill via 3-2 finishes, followed by Curtis Sweezey (4-3), Danny Gubser (6-4) and Aaron McClinton, who rounded out the top five via consistent 5-5 placings, narrowly edging younger brothers Tyler and Travis, who finished sixth and seventh overall, respectively. eN STORV AND PHOTOS BV CLAV liGHT ALBANY,OR,SEPT.15 o say that Washington's Josh Hill had a great day at the second round of the CMC Trans-Cal Series at Albany Motorsports Park would be a bit of an understatement. Hill was phenomenal in a three-class decimation at the Pacific Northwest Region's finale. The 13-year-old Yamaha rider posted sweeps of the 85cc (12-13), Supermini and 125cc Intermediate classes, logging the only such feat on the day. Oregonians Mike Corder and Tiger Lacey split moto wins in the competitive 125cc and 250cc Pro classes, but it was Corder garnering a pair of overall wins. Aboard his newly acquired 2003 Honda CR250, Corder took advantage of a no-show on Lacey's part in the second 125cc Pro moto to win that class after also winning the 250cc class earlier. Lacey pulled off while leading the second 250cc moto, not wanting to aggravate his freshly mended leg, and Corder took command. Hill faced brutal competition in the 125cc Intermediate class, as Oregon's Ryan Thompson and local KTM rider Pete San nan were on hand. The minicycle speedster also had a tough field of Professional riders to deal with, but the rider from LaCenter didn't let that deter him. Suzukimounted Lacey and Corder had a great battle in the first moto of the combined 125cc Pro/Intermediate contest, a battle that went Lacey's way after the National Arenacross phenom thwarted Corder's last-ditch effort to win the moto. Lacey, who was making his retum to racing after an injury-induced layoff, didn't ride moto two, so Corder got a bit of a break - that is, until Hill came calling. Hill, who started some 15 seconds back in the second wave of riders, worked his way through the field of Professional riders to catch Corder late in the moto, even taking Albany Motarsports Park Albany, 0"'90n Results: September 15, 2002 [Round 2 of 21 P/W (4-6): 1. Garrett Christoffersen (Pol); 2. the lead from the rider who will most likely be sporting a National number shortly. Corder, though, had an answer for all of Hill's challenges and posted a moto victory to win the overall. Tyler Fick finished second overall to Corder in the Pro class, while Hill led Thompson in the Intermediate portion. "I know he [Corder] was just playing with me," said Hill, who's regarded as one of the country's top 85cc riders. "I thought that it was kind of cool, getting out there with the Pros and showing them what I've got." The Pros, however, already know what this kid's got, and just what to expect from him in the future. Lacey was impressive while winning the first 250cc Pro moto, as he held Corder at bay throughout the moto to post the win. Corder finished a close second, while the Shiftbacked Fick netted third, ahead of Washington's J.R. Vielle, who was riding his new HondaCRF450R. Vielle stayed close to Corder for several laps in moto two and, although he couldn't match Corder's pace for the duration, wound up second at moto's end. Fick finished third in the moto but netted second overall via a 2-3 tally to continue his consistency in both rounds of the series. Cllmeron Cunningh21m (Pol); 3. Jeremy Wilton (KTM). P/W (7·8): 1. Thompson was the dominant rider in the 250cc Intermediate class, using a I-I tally to top a competitive field of riders that included AMA FourStroke National veteran Nick Foister. Though Foister stayed within striking range of Thompson throughout both motos, the 17-year-old southern Oregon speedster was not to be denied on this day. Brandon Sinden finished out the day in third overall, followed by the normally dominant David Didier and Garrett Melton. KTM-mounted Sannan was a three-class contestant on the day and, after finishing a disappointing fourth overall in the 125cc Intermediate class, the local rider came back strong to post 1- I wins in the Schoolboy class, ahead of Race Lacey, and the Before The Hill Intermediate class, ahead of Didier. Hill finished out his day with a double-moto decimation of the Supermini class. Honda rider Byron Young was among the select few to keep tabs on Hill on the day, finishing a strong second to Hill in moto one after also netting second overall to Hill in the 80cc (12-13) class. However, in moto two, things went awry for Young right off the start. Young was involved in an opening-lap pileup and eventually finished 18th. cue. e n e _ S • OCTOBER 9, 2002 57
