Dan Stanley, Stanley having a close call earlier in the main when he had brushed the wall on the back straight. Back up front, Smith started to fade, and both Fay and Wait got by. On lap 11, Hayden put space between himself and Landes. The two front-runners were encountering heavy lapped traffic. Fourth-placed Zemke brake-stalled his Honda in the right-hander. It took Zemke a lap to get going. Schnabel was up to fourth now, as he had gotten past Kopp and Wait and capitalized on the misfortune of Zemke. With a little under half of the race to go, Smith got entangled with a tuff block and crashed. Smith didn't ride the rest of the main. However, the menace of that particular tuff block wasn't over - it landed in front of Stanley and sent him over the bars. Stanley had just made his way inside the top 10 when he crashed. He got back up in about 12th and passed his way back into ninth. With four laps to go, Tommy Hayden and Landes had lapped up to sixth place. Kopp was running a strong fifth, then had some bad luck. With two laps to go, his KTM locked up. "I was coming through the lefthander right after the sweeper," a very disappointed Kopp said. "I got on the throttle, and it just locked up. It wasn't good." Tommy Hayden took his first Formula USA win. "I was getting good starts, but Brett [Landes] had the inside line on me," Tommy Hayden said. "I got a little bit wide, and even Roger Lee [Hayden] got under me for a minute on the first lap, but as soon as I got into second, I got right on Brett, trying to be right there, because it's hard to pass, and I didn't want to miss any opportunities if he made any mistakes. I wanted to jump on him early. He made a couple, and from there I was able to get by. I just rode a little conservative for awhile and tried to pick it up a little and pull a little gap. And it all worked good." Landes took second, with Roger "Not bad for an old guy!" Fay said. Poovey, who would immediately jet off for an AMA Grand National race in Ohio the next day, summed up his seventh-place performance by saying, "I just wanted to get through it." Bailey, Stanley and Rickman rounded out the top 10. Rickman, who had had been knocked onto the ground in the LCQ, was just thankful to be in the main event. "I'd really like thank Roger Aupperlle for all the help they've given me this year," Rickman said. "It feels good to finally make a Grand National-style main event." Early fourth-place rider Zemke came home 11 tho "I was catching Rog [Hayden], and I brake-stalled her in the right-hander," Zemke said. "It took me a lap to get started, and that's all she wrote. We'll be back next time." Hlebo finished 12th after crashing in the right-hander on the last lap. The locked-up machine of Kopp was credited with 13th. Kirk Strong and Bryan Smith rounded out the field. With two rounds to go, fifty-four points seperate the top three in the Pro Singles points. eN Lee Hayden finishing third. Schnabel got fourth, and Wait fifth. With his fourth-place finish, Schnabel picked up only a few precious points on defending series champ and current points leader Poovey. "We made some points on Terry [Poovey], but he's got a big points lead," Schnabel said. "We'll go into Del Mar and see what happens." Wait was happy to finish in the top five after hurting his knee in an LCQ crash. "The track was fun," Wait said.
