other guys [in the World Cup race]." They were so comfortable together that Dubach actually reached out and grabbed Emig's arm midcorner once, screaming at him the whole way. Lost in all this was the fact that Hughes. on a KTM 125 SX (!), had worked his way into third. despite the power-robbing hills for which Glen Helen is famous. "That [the 125 J is the only bike I have at home," Hughes said. "I didn't decide to race this [race] until Friday, so I just brought it out. I didn't want to put pressure on myself to win, so I just rode the 125 and had some fun." Terry Fowler and Kehoe, on a CRF450R. rounded out the top five, followed by Kelly Andris. Healey, and Ward, unexpectedly riding another CRF. Ward blasted to the front at the start of the second moto, followed closely by Dubach, Healey. Kehoe and Fowler. Hughes and Emig were ninth and 10th. Dubach immediately went into the lead and checked out. "I got a better start than those guys. so they weren't able to really stay right there in touch with me, so it was a lot easier for me," Dubach said. "I could ride my own lines without having to worry about someone coming down the inside or whatnot. It was much easier that moto - I hardly feel like I broke a sweat - but it was a good race going on behind me. I kept tabs on it. On any straightaway, I'd kind of look at the one before. and 1 could see those guys. It was heatin' up, and 1 guess down to that last lap, the guys were all comin' together." Heating up it was. Hughes kept Emig at bay for quite a while as they blitzed through the pack together, eventually sitting third and fourth, behind Dubach and Kehoe. Hughes couldn't do much with Kehoe, as Kehoe's CRF would pull Hughes' 125 up the hills, so Emig made his move around Hughes and went after Kehoe. Coming into the last couple of corners. Emig went around Kehoe on the outside, but the two collided. "I felt I was passing Kehoe in the middle of the turn, and he was on the inside, and he says he came in really hot, and he got squirrelly and just came over into me, so we both went down," Emig said. The crash handed Hughes second. "I was waiting for that to happen for two motos straight. but it didn't happen until the last lap." Hughes joked. Emig got up in third. but Kehoe had a hard time starting the big thumper and had to settle for fifth. behind Fowler. Dubach got the overall with a 2-1, Emig got second with a 1-3. and Hughes was third with a 3-2. Fowler's 4-4 and Kehoe's 5-5 earned them fourth and fifth. respectively. CN Dymond (Yom); 20. Micky World Cup aGee Invitational NO EGUAL FOR ALESSI IN MINI RACE By STEVE COX PHOTO BY STEVE BRUHN SAN BERNARDINO, CA, SEPT. 29 he 80cc Invitational could be summed up in two words; Mike Alessi. He led every inch of every lap. from the first turn on, for two solid motos, winning by nearly a minute both times out. Alessi's nearest competitor was Yamaha-mounted Robert Memoli. who also seemed head and shoulders above the rest of the field. Unfortunately, Memoli had nothing for Alessi at Glen Helen. "The first moto went okay," Memoli said. "I kind of played and just got second. I was just focusing on the second moto, and then I went out and crashed in the second moto. But it's okay, you know. I gave it my all." After finishing second to Alessi in the first moto, Memoli started moto two right on his tail, only to fall spectacularly at the bottom of the first downhill. "It didn't hurt that bad." Memoli said. "I came down that downhill right behind Mike. and I was trying to outdrive him. 'cause I was right on him. and then I came down that thing, hit a big bump, and it G-ed my bike out. It just got all sloppy. I went off that jump and just fell. I was pretty confident I could charge through the pack once I got back up. I wasn't down that long. I just was bummed - I knew once I got in second, Mike would be gone. I knew I could charge back through; I just had to stay on two wheels. If I crashed again, I knew I wasn't going to get back up there. But I'm pretty happy with my charge." Memoli actually passed four riders in one lap to regain second, but by then (lap two). Alessi already had almost 30 seconds in hand. Alessi cruised to his second easy victory, while Memoli and Donnie Kearney rounded out the top three overall. "I got a good start, and I just pulled away," Alessi said. "That was pretty much it. I rode smooth. I made a few mistakes. but I tried not to make no mistakes on this kind of track, when it's really rough. But it was pretty good. I did the big jump in the back - just once in practice and once in the second moto. I didn't do it the first moto." CN Mike Alessi grabbed the holeshot in both aocc motos and led every single inch of every single lap. He was dominant. 7. Jake Hulett (Hon); 8. Michael Lelb (Suz): 9. Nicholos Senche, (Yom); 10.
