as the race progressed and placed third.
The first Expert to get the checkers was
Yamaha rider Ben Hutchinson, who tore it up
and proved why he's the four-stroke points
leader with another strong performance. Second-placed J.D. Durfey wasn't far behind, just
out of Ben's dust. Third was Honda rider Chris
Godfrey, who started in 10th and had to fight
through the dust but had a great race on his
really fast CR250.
break. On his 10<, Mims gassed it all the way
to the podium, dominating the 65cc (7-9)
class with I-I finishes. Carvey Steele joined
him on the podium in second with 4-2 fmishes, and KTM-mounted Jacob Conn was third
with solid 3-3 finishes.

Beshaw Wins the
Snowflake in a Flurry
By M1KE PARKS
ARIPINE, AZ, SEPT. I
Snowflake has always been a vary fast course.
When the Rodeo-Chedeski fire ravaged the
northern part of our state, it also burned the
technical part of the racecourse. To do our
part to replenish the forest, the Whiplash organization and friends came out weeks early and
helped the Forest Service. The efforts of all
who helped are appreciated; the work done in
the forest is important in letting everyone
know racers leave the forest better and cleaner than they found it!
The part of the course that burned was a
slice-and-dice section in the pine trees that
would keep racers honest when gearing their
bikes. The sky was the limit this time. Riders
on 250s could expect to be pinned in fifth and
still get passed by a big-bore thumper like a
go-cart on an Indy track - now, that is fast!
The locals knew this zmd showed up in waves.
All in all, the local contingent fared well in all
the classes; none, however, tried their hands
with the Whiplash Pros, who also know the
secret in Snowflake is speed.
At round nine, Kawasaki jockey Kyle
Beshaw was the first Pro, and he also scored
the overall victory. Beshaw charged from the
front line, got the holeshot and never looked
back. Beshaw has been trying to claw his way
back into the points championship race since
a DNF in Mexico earlier this year hurt his
chances. Runner-up Eric Brown ran the fastest
lap of the day on his Honda and had Beshaw
in sight at times but couldn't close in through
the dust and some confusion from the lastminute change because of a fire on the
course! Third-piaced Todd Johnson, the Pro
points leader, filled the last podium spot, but
he didn't seem to be riding with the determination he has shown in the past. Johnson
credits the young Beshaw, who is 19, with just
being faster ...on this dayl
First among the Senior Pros was Allen Violette, who pushed his CR450 to a convincing
victory. Placing second was Yamaha~mounted
Tim Wossow, who, after a convincing win in
Prescott last month in the Expert class,
stepped up to run with the big boys in the Pro
ranks. Kawasaki jockey Desi Wolfe had some
problems early on but posted faster lap times

RAVENNA, OH, SEPT. I
Michael Willard from Thornville, Ohio, traveled
north to Ohio International Raceway and put
on an awesome display of talent for riders and
spectators alike. Willard showed why he has
consistently finished in the top eight the last
three years at the Loretta Lynn's Amateur
National Championships in Tennessee.
Sponsored by Tuf Racing Kawasaki-KTM,
Ohlins Suspension and arnxsupport.com,
Willard won three classes and all six motos in
convincing style. Riding a KX85 in Senior Mini
competition, Willard was unstoppable out
front. A horde of Yamaha pilots battied for
second. Evan Gutshali claimed the spot by
going a solid 2-2. Behind him was Grant
Schlabach, third overali with a 3-6 outing.
Fourth fell to Ryan Ford (7 -3).
In the Supermini class, Willard was just as
impressive on the 10<100, besting local fast
guy Ronnie Hunt Jr. from Kinsman, Ohio.
Hunt pushed his Dave Richards Construction/The Kjngs/ProGraph-X/FCR/Yamaha of
Warren YZ85 to second overall with 2-2 finishes. Third overall went to Andy SC2ypta (3-3),
also on a Yamaha.
Willard moved up to a KTM 125 to contest
the Schoolboy (12-15) class. He again
showed a lot of speed and poise, and was not
at all intimidated by the bigger bikes. Second
and third overall went to Suzuki riders Matt
Whiplash Off·Road's Snowflake 100

Szefoyk (3-2) and Jason Ballachino (4-3),
respectively. Kawasaki jockey Joey Mashchak
was fourth overall, posting 2-6 results.
In the first Junior Mini moto, Cory Nething
moved his Yamaha out front, with Kawasaki
rider Chris Carr hoiding down second. Completing the first lap in third place was Hunt,
who started fifth. Hunt dispatched Carr to third
and went after Nething for the lead. However,
Nething wasn't about to tum over the point
and he opened up the throttle even more.
Hunt could not find a way around. As the
white flag came out, both riders seemed determined to win. They were very nearly side by
side the entire last lap. With the crowd leaning
over the fences, Hunt crossed the finish line
first, followed closely by Nething, Carr and
Yamaha rider Jeremy Danford.
Moto two was a lillie different. Hunt
grabbed the lead early and was never headed.
Nething was a firm second again, and Carr
was set to take another third but had trouble
on the last lap that dropped him back to
13th. Danford took third, followed by Keenan
Gutshall, on a Yamaha.
Troy Gould, who has been MIA for a large
part of the season, is back and looking very
strong. The rider from Perry, Ohio, delivered
two quality
moto wins aboard his YZ to win the 125cc
B class. Ballachino (2-3) was second, and
third went to Mashchak (4-2).
Kawasaki jockey Kimberly Kocher won the
Women's division. Despite taking a shot to the
face and suffering a bloody nose, she stili
toughed out a I-I performance.
