OH, AUG. 30 Riding three classes is the norm for 33-yearold Brian Gonser of Newark. Winning is also very familiar to the Buckeye Powersportsbacked Vet rider. On this night, though, during Honda Hills Friday Night Series' last race of the season, Gonser would have reason to celebrate. Although he only won two of the three classes he entered on the evening, he would wrap up series championships in the Over 25 B, Over 30, and Open divisions, ail aboard his might CRF450R. "Many thanks go out to Buckeye Powersports, Axo Clothing, White Brothers, Carpenter Oil, and all my other great sponsors thanks so much," gushed the humble winner of the Over 30 and Open classes, who also finished runner· up in the Over 25 class on the night. In other racing action, J.T. Turner whipped up on the Pee Wee 50cc class, as the Circleville native ruled the division on his Yamaha. The Pre classes and the money were split among some fast locals, as Andy Willard took the l25cc A victory and Travis Hartshorn jumped on the 250cc A class. Crowd-favorite fast guy Steve-O Andrich had bad luck in both classes, blowing up one machine in the 125cc class and stailing his Yamaha YZ426F in the 250cc A race. Needless to say, it was not his night - although he did manage to top the Over 25 A class. Clubs: MotoByron Riders Club. (All riders must be AMA members.) He topped Larry Weiss in both of his wins, in the Over 50 class and the combined Over 60 and 600cc Sportsman contest. in the Over 50 event, Brown took the lead from Weiss and Mike Keane. on their 750cc machines, and Bultaco jockey Robert Miller. Weiss slipped into the lead off the second turn on lap three as he and Brpwn ran their screaming Triumphs under the proverbial blanket for the next few laps. As they entered the third turn on lap six, Brown slipped into the lead and held it to the checkered flag. As is the case with many Vintage events, several classes may run combined with others. Nick Taylor led the 250cc Sportsman final from wire to wire from MacQueen, Way and Jim Malloy. With Taylor and MacQueen consistent in front, T eny Waite provided most of the excitement after starting last. By halfway, he was battling Way for third. taking the spot with a lap left. Waite took the brake linkage off his Bultaco for the Brakeless final, again starting last, behind Dave Heberling and Mark Fillebrown. However, he quickly buHt up his momentum, getting by Fillebrown's hardtail Triumph and then stalking Heberling. He took the lead off the second tum on lap three to take his first win in more than 35 years. The '70s Singles final was a processional affair, as Rick Pfanders took the lead at the start from his buddy James Headman and his mentor Larry Weiss and the rest of the pack and kept it. (yam). Mill Creek Motocross Park Capps Grinds 'em at the Mill By MATTHEW HOLT LEEDS, AL, AUG. 31 After a long summer break, the Alabama Championship Series picked back up. Round 10 of the series made the stop at the incredible facilities at Mill Creek Motocross Park. The racing for this round was run on the supercross track under the lights and in the cool of night. The track was groomed perfectly and ready for racing. It appeared that many riders had been honing their skills during the break, most noticeably the 125cc C class. When the gate dropped, RM rider Jacob Capps was out front and already pulling a healthy lead. As the laps wound down. the distance between first and second got larger. At the end of mote one, Capps took the checkered flag first. with David Gravette second and Micah Gregg third. Moto two was almost a repeat of the first. Capps took the win, and with a 1-1 tally for the two motos, he took home the overall. Second overall was awarded to LaDale Smith (4-2), and third overall went to Gravette, who posted 2-3 finishes for the night. Later in the evening, the 250cc C class got its tum at the supercross track. This class has had some great battles all year long, between Capps, Ricky Allen, Damien Brown and Nathan Clanton. Due to a wrist injury sustained in practice the week before. Clanton was on the gate and racing for points in the series only. Capps put his CRF450R out front and left everyone else to race for what was left. Capps took the overall with 1-1 finishes, followed by Gravette with 2-2 finishes, and Allen got third overall with 4-3 finishes. Brown finished just outside the top three with 3-5 finishes. Clanton rode hard and managed ninth overall, despite his injuries. Capps raced three classes, and finished first in all of them. He swept the 125cc C, 250cc C, and Youth classes, all with 1-1 moto finishes. The Mini classes were great, as always. The little guys on the 65cc bikes hit the track with all they had.
