Barona Oaks Mini National Barona Oaks Raceway Nick Davis leads Tommy McAdams (11). Cale Wallace (557), Chris Panek (231) and the rest of the 125cc Intennedlate riders through the whoops at the Sarona Oaks Mini NatIonal In Ramona. California, In an effort to catch Mlcq. Griffin, who had already checked out on them en route to the win. pack. With just two laps to go, Wheeler jumped to the inside of Evans at the right-hander on top of the uphill to grab second. In the 125cc Expert class, Sean Thornton was the early leader, with Wheeler, Casillas and Cory Macomber in tow. Soon after, Casillas powered around Wheeler and Thornton. With nothing but rea I estate between him and the checkered flag, Casillas checked out on Wheeler and Thornton. There were eight 250cc Pro riders, but after the gate dropped, Casillas quickly put some breathing room between himself and the hungry pack. In the second 250cc event, Lars-Erik Larson jumped out front and held the position until lap two. Then Casillas again took over and waved goodbye. The only event Casillas didn't win was the 250cc Expert class, in which Wheeler was able to win both motos. Griffin lost the first 250cc Intermediate race to Cale Wallace but came back and turned things around in moto two. Griffin had trouble with Wallace early on in the 125cc (16-25) division, but those troubles turned out to be a "gimme" later on. Wallace got the holeshot in moto one, and it took four laps of catching up before Griffin could attempt a move. Before Griffin could make his move, Wallace dropped back to sixth, giving the lead and eventual win to Griffin. There were 13 125cc Intermediates on the line, each occasionally glancing over and sizing up the riders next to him. When the white flag came out for the race already under way on the track, the glancing stopped and the focus was on turn one. When the gate dropped, it was Cale Wallace that everyone was after. In the second race, Griffin took over, with Nick Davis following. Tommy McAdams had finished 11 th in moto one but used a good start to stay with the leaders in third place. Griffin took the win and the overall, with Davis and McAdams trailing. STORY AND PHOTOS BY HOMER EUBANKS RAMONA, CA, AUG. 31-SEPT. 1 )7 he 16th annual Barona Oaks Mini U National drew nearly 600 riders from all age groups. CMMC, a nonprofit organization, with the help of their title sponsors MotoWorld, MotoWoridRacing.com, KTM Sport Motorcycles, Quinsey Powersports, Barona Band of Mission Indians, Precision Concepts, One Industries, Threat Racing and Escondido Cycle Center, gave away more than $40,000 in prizes. Grand-prize winners received a motorized Go-Ped worth $800 but, most importantly, all the riders got their chance at going through the gift line. Jesse Casillas was the big winner, as he took home a Go-Ped in the 125cc Expert class and also took home most of the $2000 purse in each of the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes. Winning multiple grand prizes was Micky Griffin, who won the 125cc Intermediate, 125cc (16-25), and 250cc Intermediate classes. The other grand-prize winners included Pee Wee (0-6) Stock racer Brian Taylor, Pee Wee (7-8) Stock racer Eric Yorba, Super Pee Wee (0-9) racer Colt Hubbs, 60cc (0-8) Austin PolitelIi, 60cc (9-11) racer Chris Plouffe, 80cc (7-11) racer Trevor Reis, 80cc Novice Donnie Kearney, 80cc Intermediate Adrian Fuller, Supermini racer Cas Swift, 125cc (12-15) racer Michael Parker, 125cc Novice Brock Harden, 250cc Novice Kevin Frisbie, and 250cc Expert Chris Wheeler. In the first 125cc Pro event, Tyler Evans shot out of the gate and Casillas started out in sixth. On the following lap, Wheeler tried to block-pass Casillas and both riders went down. Casillas got back up and was trading the lead with Evans by lap five. The two put some excitement into the event until Evans lost his concentration. In the second moto, Casillas decided not to play around and took his Yamaha around turn one ahead of the 64 OCTOBER 2, 2002' cue I • n _ .... s A total of 28 Supermini riders saw Brad Masters take the first-division event win and Cas Swift win the other. In the final showdown, a total of 23 riders took to the gate, but Swift quickly showed the pack the back of his jersey. Clay Higgins grabbed second at the checkers. Masters didn't enjoy the main event at all, as he finished 22nd. In the Pee Wee (0-6) Stock category, it was all Brian Tayler. In both races, Tayler was able to keep Bryce Cords back in second to win himself one of the grand-prize Go-Peds. A total of 26 Pee Wee (7-8) Stock riders crammed into the starting gate for their main event. Garret Jackson hounded Eric Yorba throughout the event, but Jackson had to settle for second pick in the prize line. Third place was Blake Campos. Campos won the Under 12 XR50 event without winning a single moto. Campos came across second in moto one, behind Ivan Ramirez, who was a DNR in moto two. Cameron Drown won moto two but did not race moto one. Second overall went to Troy Graffunder, who went 4-2 on the day. eN Barana Oaks Raceway Ramona, California Results: August 31-September I, 2002 50 (0-8) FIT SHAFT: 1. Tristan Miller (KTM): 2.
