STORY AND PHOTOS BY GREG ROBERTSON PERRIS, CA, SEPT. 8 ound two of the GFI Racing/Goat Eyewear/Fox/PJ 1/Wiseco/Dunlop-sponsored Fall Series South, held at Perris Raceway, saw Hondamounted Sean Collier collect his firstever 250cc Pro-class victory in only his second attempt. Collier was a front-runner during the series opener on the previous weekend at Glen Helen Raceway Park until a bobble near the end of the race allowed Jonathan Shimp to motor away with the win. The CRF450R-mounted duo of Shawn Bushnell and Kevin Townsend shared the holeshot as the one-shot, 20-minute 250cc Pro moto got under way. Mike Sleeter was quickly on the move and controlled the lead after just a few turns had been completed. Collier gated about fifth, and by the completion of lap one he was running a close third, behind Randy Clark. Collier was up to second place by lap three, with Michael Young joining him in third after a midpack' start. Both Collier and Young were around Sleeter after a lap, with Young going underneath Collier to run out front. Collier studied Young's lines for two circuits of the jump-filled layout before retaking the top spot. Once out front, Collier and his Honda of HoustonjTwisted Threads/MXRider.com/ Troy Lee Designs-backed CRF450R would put a second per lap on Young to earn his first-ever 250cc Pro win. "The track was nice,· ~aid the obviously pleased Collier after his win. "It was a Uttle tight and hard to pass, but it was cool, though. I got around Sleeter after the first couple of laps and then Young slipped by me on the inside unexpectedly; I didn't really see him. I caught and repassed him at about the halfway mark and started pulling away and came away with the win, so I'm pretty excited. I 58 OCTOBER 2, 2002' I: U I: wanted the money. I kept thinking about that Pro purse, so I just kept pushing and pushing.· Young easily collected the secondplace money on his MotoXXX/ O'Neall Maxxis/Smith-sponsored YZ250, a safe distance ahead of Sleeter, who was making a return to racing after an injury. "I got a great start," exc;:laimed the NCY /Maxima/FMF / Acerbis/Sidibacked Sleeter afterward. "My Tom Morgan bike was working great. Collier and Young were riding at a good pace. This was my first race back from breaking my leg six weeks ago, so I've got to keep working hard and get back into the thick of things." Jeff Eide slowly worked up from a 10th-place start to close to the back door of fellow Mid Cities Honda rider Townsend at the checkers for fifth. Bryan Jaramillo slipped past Clark on the last lap for sixth, with Raymond Carvacho, Bushnell and King Smith rounding out the top 10. Factory Suzuki-backed Shane Bess led every inch of the single 20-minute 125cc Pro race. Eide held • • n e _ s ReSDIts: Septenlber 8, 2002 (RDund 2J down second place for a couple of laps before Cody Knauss dropped him back to third. Knauss was soon joined by Collier and Brandon Morgan. Collier pulled off with bike problems before the halfway point, as Morgan reeled in Bess. Morgan was all over Bess before getting out of shape at the end of a series of jumps and going down. Bess ended up being alone at the finish. Knauss earned second, followed by Eide, Carvacho and Chad Frank. For the second consecutive week, Josh Stice has been the one to beat in the highly competitive 250cc Intermediate ranks. A pair of good starts turned ·into runaway victories for Stice: Micky Griffin charged his way out of the pack for an impressive 2-2 score. Jason Larson mixed it up pretty well with Justin Eide and Cory Cross en route to his 3-3 finishes. Carlos Gonzalez continued his winning ways from the opening round as he went wire to wire for the 125cc Intermediate first-moto win. Tyler Duncan kept Gonzalez in his sights and finished second, ahead of Garrett Taylor and Joshua Grant. Gonzalez got the moto-two holeshot, but Duncan got around him within a lap to run out front. Gonzalez tried every trick in the book, but the KTM-mounted Duncan held his own to take the well-deserved overall win by a bikelength at the checkers. Taylor, Griffin and Grant fought over third, with Taylor prevailing this week on his YZF. Grant returned to outrun Gonzalez and 18 other riders for a win of his own in the Schoolboy class with a perfect 1-1 score. Daniel Sani and Gonzalez each earned a runner-up moto finish, with Sani's coming in the tie-breaking second outing. Aaron Gwin (4-4) and Ty Morrow (7-5) rounded out the top five.
