Zero Gravity 600 SuperSport reads much like Formula Superbike. Just change "Jim Carroll" to "Ryan Schnitz" and "ZX· 12R" to "ZX-6R." Like Carroll, Schnitz is unbeaten and un-scored upon in 600 SuperSport action this season. He holds every number-one qualifying position and every event title so far in 2002. Atco was more of the same, although the pack is getting tighter behind the points leader. While Schnitz once had a minimum tenth· and-a-half advantage, it's now just a few hundredths. Schnitz took the pole on the Team Kawasaki ZX-6R with a 9.75, followed by Eddie Krawiec at 9.78, and Keith Thompson at 9.83. Schnitz made the hot lap of the event with a 9.68 in round two against Keith Dennis, and then beat Krawiec in the semis. On the other side of the ladder, standout privateer Pat Leonard got by Chad Millholland before making his first-ever final. Leonard, on the Dels Performance/ Lenc Bros ZX-6R, made a game of it, getting a big holeshot and running a 9.93, but Schnitz was just too strong, keeping his win streak alive with a 9.71. Rick McWaters cleared the table in the Yamaha Hot Rod Cruiser class, taking the number-one qualifier position, the win, and setting both the elapsed time and speed records. McWaters, riding his Terry Reed-prepared Harley-Davidson, took the e.t. record held by Mark Underwood during qualifying with a 9.842 blast. Underwood, riding the Patrick Racing Yamaha Warrior, qualified second at 10.08, followed by the UFO Performance Harley of current champion Jon Cornell at 10.09. Reed set the mph record at 135.18 in the first round against the Orient Express Warrior of Eddie Krawiec and got by Cornell in the next round to meet teammate McWaters in the semis. McWaters showed no mercy, putting Reed on the trailer while establishing new records at 9.823 seconds and 136.34 mph to meet Underwood in the final for the fourth straight event. Underwood pushed the tree in the final and redlighted, giving the win to McWaters, who now has a virtual lock on the championship.
