(Left) Steve Beattie held second place early, dropped back to siJrth, then fought his way back to third· a position he would hold at the finish. (Right) Coolbeth had plenty to smile about - the drought was over. so tightly that they both blew the groove in turn one. Frieze HarleyDavidson/Air Hawk's A.J. Eslick was right there to pounce. Mees fought back to lead three laps, but Eslick was not to be denied as he took the lead back on lap 10. Roeder was back to second by lap 11 and the final order was finally set. Marioneaux-Nallin Racing's Scott Scherb was a lonely fourth over Gutterridge Harley-Davidson/Ope Racing's Josh Toungett. eN SeiotD Downs Columbus, Dhia Results: Sepblmber Zz, ZDDZ [Round 19 of ZDI HEAT 1 (10 laps; 11 riders, top three transfer): 1. SEMI 2 (8 laps; 12 riders, top two transfer): 1. Jake Johnson (H·D): 2. Dominic Beaulec (H·D); 3. BRIEFLY••• With the Progressive Insurance U.S. Flat Track Championship all wrapped up. it was easier for Chris Carr to appreciate Kenny Coolbeth's victory. "I've got to congratulate Kenny." Carr said.•All the bad luck he's had at times. over the years. it's pretty ironic that he's the 13th different winner that we've had this year. So that's cool." Fomner Canadian National Champion Steve Beattie had his best day in awhile. "The podium is good. real good." Beattie said. "It's been awhile - about seven years. Third's good. Thanks to Johnny and Sarah [Goad] and Lancaster Harley-Davidson for getting me up here. The groove was pretty easy to stay on. not near as hard as Vemon, but if you got off you were in trouble. like any groove track. Bottom line was I wasn't giving up the bottom. Anyone going around was going to have to pass me on the outside." Bryan Bigelow was still suffering from the big Vernon pile·up when he came to Scioto Downs. Bigelow stili has a gapping hole in his right knee that will be taken care of post-season. " I'm glad there's only one race left." Bigelow said. "1 need to have some wor!< done on my body." Pre-race favortte Ceo Roeder II made the best of what was a bad situation for him. "If it had been a cushion. we would have won. but it was a groove and we got sixth. so I'm happy with that." Roeder said. "We knew it was going to groove up. and that's the way it goes. We were fast at first. but I knew we were going to struggle. A pea-gravel track in the day. you know it's going to groove up. but I'd realiy like to see it a cushion. They could make it a cushion if they wanted. They've got all the equipment. but that's not what they wanted. The track's the same for everybody. Congratulations to Coolbeth. He finally got one. and I guess we'lI be back next year." Sleepless from Seattle; Terry Poovey, Bryan Smith ans Joe Kopp all took the red eye from Seattle to Columbus after racing in Tacoma. Washington. on Saturday night. All three made it worthwhile by making the main event. Poovey would finish 14th. Smith 17th and Kopp fourth. "1 really needed this today," Kopp said. "It was a long night to get here. and I only made $185 last night." A bad day gone worse: Coziahr Harley-Davidson/Country Motors's Johnny Murphree had mechanical problems in his heat. then was forced to start his semi on the penalty line after changing motorcycles. Murphree finished third in the semi. one spot out. and the number two man in points was forced to watch the main. cyale n • vv s OCTOBER 2, 2002 25
