jumping the light, took second, ahead of Bill Cook, Hilbert, Jim Lee and the rest of the field. Hilbert caused the third restart when he jumped the second-start light and started the race from tum four, passing three riders on his charge to his fourth-place finish. The Combo feature got off to a strange start when Butler got the holeshot and Lowe thought he had red-lighted. Lowe didn't move until starter Rick Tibbets hollered to him that it was a start. By that time, the field was on the back stretch, and Lowe at the back of the pack. At midrace. Garrison crashed in turn one, bringing out the red flag. On the singlefile restart, Butler again took the lead, while Matthews passed Brown for second. At the finish, it was Butler, Matthews. Brown and the rest of the field. Tyler Sheppard continued his domination of the 100cc class, winning the heat and the feature. In the 250cc class, Dave Wolf won the heat race by a large margin over Sheppard and the rest of the field. In the feature, Wolf charged into the lead but then retired after one lap with a stuck throttle cable, giving the race to Sheppard. This event was marred when Joey Brit· ton and Jacob Tolbert tangled in tum three; both riders went down and Britton was trans· ported to the hospital. Fortunately, his injuries were only bruises and abrasions. Results 50: 1. Danny Hasty (Hon): 2. Austin Simmonds: 3 Ryan (KTM); 4. Anthony Horton (Yam); 5. CAYUGA, IN, AUG. 31 "Fast" Andy Fortner lived up to his name again at the Pleasure Riders hillclimb on the last night of August. Some 147 riders rode the I 50-foot, three-stage hill, but none were as fast as Fortner. Riding a CR500 Honda, Fortner flew high and far over the top in 4.098 seconds on his first ride in the 600cc class, and no one was able to match him the rest of the night. Jared McKay was closest in the 600cc class, posting a fine 4. I 36-second time for second place. with the "Rocketman," Randy Trosper, turning a 4.198-second time on his Honda for third. Ron Todd and Doug Campbell were close behind Trosper with 4.214- and 4.251-second times on their KX500s. Fortner was actually his own closest challenger for the overall fast time, as his 4.126second winning time in the 750cc class on his Kawi triple was second· fastest overall. The next three places in the 750cc class also went to triples - ridden by Paul Hillard, Mark Goodman Jr., and Jason Northrup. Boots Weber brought his beautiful Yamaha twin in from Wathena, Kansas, to take fifth. Scott Pearson was also a double winner on the night, riding a pair of CR450R Hondas. Riding his stock- length bike in the Open Stock class (401cc and up), he carded a 4.463-second time on his first ride. which held up for the win. Tom Brown grabbed second on his CR500 in 4.509 seconds, with Butch Fetters, Doug Campbell and Tate Pearson filling out the top five places. Pearson returned just a short while later with his stretched Honda and claimed the 600cc Four-Stroke-c1ass win with a 4.526second time. (Yes, he was faster on the stocklength bike.) Weber, riding an incredible CBR600-powered rocket, spun his tire the entire length of the hill and stopped the clock in 4.566 seconds for second place. Fetters, Pearson and Bud Northrup claimed the next three spots. Jon Creek came from behind to take the 250cc·c1ass win after sitting in fourth at inter- mission' with a 4.505·second time. Gordon Green had set the best time at 4.439 seconds on his YZ250 in the first round, but, one by one, he got knocked down to fifth place. Mark Schroeder nailed a 4.353-second run on his stock YZ250, and looked like he had the win until Creek flew his RM250 over in a classwinning 4.353 seconds. Goodman slipped into third on his KX250 in 4.371 seconds, and Don Barber Jr. claimed fourth on his CR250 with a 4.406-second time. Results 50: I. Dylen Bl1Idy (Pot): 2. Matt Goeken (Act): 3. Christmas Motor Sports Park Bloyer's Early Christmas By PAUL BLOYER CHRISTMAS, MI, AUG. 31 Larson's Cycle Racing/FMF/Scolt USA/Klotzbacked Chris Bloyer was the overall winner at the second annual Mark Knox Memorial Hare Scrambles, held at the Christmas Motor Sports Park in Christmas, Michigan. Bloyer, currently the Minnesota District 23 and Wisconsin District 16 hare scrambles A-class series leader, won his second overall D16 hare scrambles in convincing fashion with a 1:44 advantage over second overall Wisconsin racer J.D. Friebel, who paced himself nicely throughout the race on his Moose Racing-backed RM125. Kevin Kolbus of the promoting Christmas Motor Sports Park did a fantastic job with the sanctioning and motocross-track preparation. Helping Kolbus out with trail cutting and layout were co-trail bosses Scott Snell and Jack Drummond of the Sandstormers Motorcycle Club. As this is probably one of the more piCturesque facilities in the Midwest, located in one of America's most beautiful areas, 127 racers from Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota and Ontario, Canada, were not disappointed with the very organized event on the fun, 3.2-mile course. With temperatures in the 80s, the first wave of A riders took to the nicely groomed and watered motocross track, followed in one-minute intervals by the B riders, the Seniors and C-class riders, all of whom must have thought they'd died and gone to Hare Scrambles Heaven. The first half of the !'IX track had a long start straight, followed by a long and unique flat· track curve around the watering-system pond. Then they came back onto the motocross track for a third of a mile before the first I-mile woods section. That was followed by half a mile of fun motocross track, with a variety of doubles, tabletops and whoops, followed by another half-mile woods section that mirrored the first with its mixture of logs and off-camber and tight trail. When the racers emerged from the last woods section, they were treated to the last third-mile of motocross track, with doubles, sandy berms, and whoops. With the top A riders totaling 12 laps and the rest of racers making anywhere from seven to 11 laps, Hare Scrambles Heaven was looking a little more tarnished, especially in the later stages of the race. Racing action started out with Michigan rider Nate Zambon pulling the holeshot on his big KTM 520. Zambon then showed off his Christmas Motor Sports Park: Chris Bloyer was the overall winner at the second annual Mark Knox Memorial Hare Scrambles, in Christmas, Michlgan_ flat-tracking abilities around the aforementioned pond. The top six A riders stayed pretty much the same through the first three laps, with the exception of Nate Zambon, who crashed his way out of the top five. Bloyer, who was seventh on lap one, had now moved into fourth, and he started methodically picking off riders through laps four, five and six. On lap seven, he disposed of Jordan Zambon for the lead, and he was never challenged throughout the remaining four laps of the race. Senior rider Brett McCoy had a good ride to take first. Mike Mutterer finished with a strong ride for first place in the B class, and Paul Parker had an impressive race to win the C class. the danger of motocross tracks. With rules in place that do not allow racers to do doubles and triples, racing can be kept safe for entrylevel racers while keeping it exciting for Expert-class racers who demand these types of obstacles. Since motocross racing has evolved to include more and more man-made obstacles, Veteran racers no longer feel left out of the motocross action. Instead, racers can race in a class that keeps it fair and fun for all. Beginners are also prohibited from doing doubles ands triples, which has greatly reduced injuries and greatly increased the levels of fun and excitement. Delta Raceway is down to the "Final Four" weeks of the Saturday night series. The 2002 season will end on October 4 and 5 at the Stars of Tomorrow and Today event. Results: A O/A: I. Chris Bloyer: 2. Delta Raceway Navy Invades the Delta By ART JYlABRY DELTA, OH, AUG. 31 Naval reserve officers invaded the weekiy Saturday night motocross in Delta, taking over the Veterans Over 30 Novice class. Todd Brooks and Roy C. Murphy, both just back from active duty in Afghanistan, paraded their Yamahas into the first and fourth positions at the Labor Day episode of Saturday night motocross madness. In moto one, Brooks charged his YZ426F into the left-handed first tum and kept the lead throughout the moto. Murphy was right behind his Navy buddy for the first half of the moto, but track regulars Eric Leedy and Scot Kruse were able to pass Murphy and leave him with fourth place at the finish. Murphy, the defending 2001 Veterans Over 30 Novice champion, was pleased with his finish, considering this was his first race of the season after spending way too much time in the Middle East fighting terrorism. Both Brooks and Murphy are in excellent physical condition from the grueling desert conditions they are used to. Also returning to action in the Veterans Novice class this week was Mike Sabatos. Tough as nails, Sabatos was able to beat a battle with cancer and a racing injury, and he came back with eighth- and sixth-place finishes to take sixth overall. The Veterans Novice class, introduced in the 2000 racing season, has been a popular class each week.
