Meigs County Fairgrounds: Joel Boysec contests the 125cc C class at round 16 of the Ohio County Fairs Motocross Championship Series in Pomeroy. Champion Speedway Rafferty Wins Again By JAMES MCCOu.aM OWEGO, NY, AUG. II Cam Rafferty has owned Champion Speedway for the last few weeks. With Tom Sephton dominating at Action Park and Rafferty doing the same at Champion, the other Division One Meigs County Fairgrounds Whitelow Whips 'em All riders are going to have to step up and end these guys' winning streaks. Using his MPS-backed Hondas to their full potential, Whitelow used great starts on his CRI25 and CRF450R to take three class wins, thrusting his red machines through the whoops faster than everybody else. Quiet, as usual, in his victory, White low was simply unbeatable on the evening, taking the overall victories in the single-moto-format I 25cc B, 16-24 and Open classes. Another rider having a good night of racing was Pro racer Dickie Hoy. The bus driver from Newark stole the show in the 125cc and 250cc A classes. Hoy once again was taking all the money home, winning big aboard his Swifty Madinger-tuned, Buckeye Powersportsbacked machines. also incredibly fast. Mikey Robinson and Burge both won their semis. Diem took the win in the last-chance qualifier. This set up an exciting main event. Off the start, Sephton got sandwiched between Diem and Robinson, bringing out the red flag. Off the restart, Sephton and Rafferty were side by side. Going into the third corner, Rafferty pulled ahead. Then, coming out of the second comer, Burge got sideways; he and Diem got together, but were both okay. Since three laps had been completed, Rafferty got another victory. You can guarantee that the other riders will be gunning for Rafferty next week. Brian Hollenbeck returned to Support A action this week after breaking his leg early this season at Action Park Speedway. Floyd Clark also returned to speedway racing after being out for a while. Both returning riders had excellent nights. Clark and Hollenbeck won their heat races and advanced to the main event. Clark came off the gate first, but he was too fast in the first corner and slid outside. Results 125 A; I. Dickie Hoy (Hon): 2. Mark McDaniel (Yam). t25 B: I. Andy Whltelow (Hen): 2. Riding his CR500 in the 600cc class, Fortner took the first-round lead with a good 4.436-second run on the 200-foot hill. In the second round, however, 16-yearold Jared McKay flew his KX500 over the top in 4.401 seconds to move into the c1Z1ss lead and set a new Fast Time. Fortner was up to the challenge, though, and he responded with a typical "Fast Andy" full-throttle assault on the hill and flew his Honda high over the top and halfway down the other side before landing it in a class-winning 4.342 seconds, which would also take the overall Fast Time award. Fifteen-year-old Jacob Tackitt took third place with a 4.479-second time on Gayle Jenkins' Honda, with Randy Trosper and Jason Northrup running fourth and fifth on their Hondas. Fortner was a double winner, as he also claimed the 750cc-c1ass win with a 4.760-second time on his Kawasaki triple. Northrup. also riding a Kawi triple, stopped the clocks in 4.928 seconds for second place, with Greg Rankin taking his Yamaha twin over in 5.981 seconds. Northrup did come away with a win of his own, however. Riding his big four-cylinder Yamaha YZ1220F, he topped the hill on his second ride with a 4.783-second time to win the Open class. He had to come from behind, as Jim Redpath, Gayle Jenkins and Randy "Buzz" Green all posted faster times on their first runs, with Redpath's 4.808-second time on his big Kawasaki four-banger taking the class lead into intermission. In the second round, Jenkins, riding Steve Shafer's Harley, slipped under Redpath with a 4.800-second time to take the lead before Northrup posted his c1ass·winning time. Redpath could not improve on his time, so he had to settle for third, with Green taking fourth on his Harley and Jim Shuler filling out the top five. Holmes County Fair Motocross Gracyk Right at Home at Holmes By RaPERT X. PEu..Err MlLLERSBURG, OH, AUG. 14 Team Green's star racer Gavin Gracyk of nearby Blissfield, Ohio, showed up with his very trick, neon-green Kawasakis and, though he lacked the normal horse-and-buggy transportation used by many locals here in the heart of Amish country, he was never short on horsepower. Returning from a recent strong performance at the AMA National Amateur Motocross Championships at Loretta Lynn's Dude Ranch in Tennessee, Gracyk showed no mercy to the riders back home. Now, the highly talented young man is looking ahead to a Pro career and is ready to leave behind his rich Amateur history. Snatching all the big money with a pair of firsts in the 125cc and 250cc A classes, Gracyk sent series regular Dickie Hoy into an unusual position - second place, as Hoy would beat the rest of the stacked Expert riders. Donning an Amish hat on the podium, "Buffalo" Bill Reiss was the big hero of the old guys' classes in Millersburg. Reiss sailed his Honda to wins in the Over 30 and Over 40 classes. ,----------------,Ul ~ -' UJ >< ~ ~ ~ Results 50; 1. Dylan BIlIdy (Pol): 2. Jeremillh Lyday (Yam). 85 JR: I. Cody Rankin (yam): 2.
