Summer Stadium-X Classic Pro Night Frozen Ocean Moto-X Park Johnson, Plotts Top Pro Night By LARRY WOOSTER AUBURN,NY, AUG. 21 Frozen Ocean Moto~X Park held the annual Summer Stadium·X Classic - Pro Night, sponsored by G&L Trucking, Spy, FMF, M&R Sports & Mower, Tom's Body Shop, Kawasaki, Husqvarna, and Coca-Cola. The announcers pronounced thjs race "stop number 10.5 of the National Outdoor Motocross Series schedule," noting the large number of top riders taking advantage of everything the Aubum, New York, track has to offer while en route to the big dance in Binghamton. Pro riders Paul Carpenter, Kevin Johnson, Joe Oehlhof, Ty Wallace, Damien Plotts, Ryan Mills, Jack Carpenter, Craig Trugilo, Tommy Harrison, Turbo Reif, Jeff Northrup. Justin Murray, Levi Rega, Todd Gosselaar, Aaron Dieter, and many more thrilled the huge crowd of spectators. This night was sure to live up to its billing, with both the J25cc and 250cc Pro-Expert classes being large enough to necessitate their being divided into two divisions for their heats, and highlighting the night with full-gate feature motos. Also, the top four finishers from each of the 125cc Pro-Expert heats would advance to the five-lap Dash For Cash. The 250cc Division One holeshot went to Paul Carpenter, as did the win, as he held off challenges from Oehlhof and Wallace. In Division Two, Kevin Crine took the holeshot by "fendering" off Dieter and Doug DeHann. In the 125cc Division One heat, Wallace snatched the holeshot, with Johnson and Mills bar to bar and on his tail. Mills powered his way to the win, followed not so closely by Johnson, Wallace and Trugilo, who all advanced to the Dash. In the Division Two heat, Charles Ellis grabbed the early lead, with Crine, Dieter and Jack Carpenter all vying for the all-important second through fourth places. When everything shook out, it was Crine with the win and Rega, Reif and Ellis all earning a spot in the 125cc Dash. With $250 on the line for just five laps of thrills and chills, eight 125cc Pro riders exploded off the starting pad in the Dash. Ellis and Wallace would lock and unlock their handlebars a few times while fighting for the advantage, but Mills tried to stay fast and clean running the inside line. Once Mills was free and clear of his other competitors, he stepped out to a great lead. Mills claimed the $250 from M&R Sports and Mower, and in Victory Circle he thanked the Denman family for putting on such a great race. . The feature 250cc Pro-Expert contest rocked the house, with Plotts, Trugilo and Tom Burton going a bit wide side by side by side and pinching Crine on his inside line. In their wake, Paul Carpenter and Dieter missed the wave and wiped out, berm-surfer-style. Plotts and Crine jumped out front in a twobike breakaway. Crine looked first inside, then outside, then inside again as he searched high and low for a way around Plotts. Oehlhof was on a mission, and he moved past Wallace and was soon challenging Crine for second. Plotts Frozen Ocean Moto-X Park: The 250cc Pro winner at the Summer Stadium-X Classic Pro Night in Auburn, New York, was Damlen Plotts. continued to lay down incredibly fast lap times, but Oehlhof was now past Crine and quickly reeling in Plotts, but Plotts took the checkered flag first in a near-photo finish with Oehlhof, who was a dose second, and Crine placed third overall. The 125cc feature moto matched the excitement level of the 250cc race, and added in a few new wrinkles of its own. Ellis held the holeshot edge, with Wallace, Plotts, Truglio and Johnson four bikes wide behind him. As this deal shuffled out, Mills, Ellis and Plotts captured the huge crowd's applause as they fiew united, bar to bar to bar, over the big finish-line jump on lap one. Mills managed to get into the lead through the next comer and into the nonrhythmic whoop section with Ellis and Plotts in tow. Johnson whaled on the tops of the whoops and skimmed past Plotts and Ellis in a fat way, all in one lap. Now, with Johnson pressuring Mills to pick up the pace, everyone would see just who was qUicker with five laps left. When Mills went whaling on an outside line, he found himself dancing with one of the hay bales but still leading Johnson. Unfortunately for Mills, the FMF cover on the bale decided to get involved with his rear tire and became wrapped around the whole assembly. Mills stayed on the gas as little yellow pieces of the FMF cover fiew everywhere like a yellow snowstorm. Johnson had borrowed WNYMA Amateur rider Jesse Repass' 125cc Yamaha for the night, and now he took the lead with it, over Mills. Johnson won first over· all for the 125cc Pro-Expert class and, incredi- bly, Mills and his FMF-yellow rear tire hung on for second overall. Cook wasn't impressed, and he hung right behind the Triumph's rear tire. The trio pulled away from the rest of the field and stayed in tight formation for most of the first half of the J O-Iapper. Joyce would show Harsh a wheel occasionally, with Cook doing the same to Joyce, but all three stayed in their positions. After the halfway flags, Joyce pulled by the Honda of Harsh in tum 12 and led down the front straight by half a wheel. Harsh came back in the first bowl and leaped out of the comer to regain the point. As Harsh threw it over to the left entering the first 90, he went down suddenly. Joyce was trying the outside, and Harsh's sliding bike took him off as he tried to avoid the wreck. The Triumph rider couldn't avoid the tumbling bike and hit it at speed, rolling over the entire bike and becoming airborne. Joyce miraculously stayed upright and came back on the track, though way behind the opportunistic Cook. "After hitting Buff's bike and fiying over it, I looked up and I was still on two wheels'" said Joyce afterward. "I couldn't beUeve it!" There were still four laps remaining, and the Triumph was about a quarter of a lap By STEVE STASER TALLADEGA,AL,AUG.24 Tim Joyce has won many championships the past few years aboard his Teknic Leathers! D&D Cycles-sponsored 500cc Triumph. Those wins came mostly in the Heavyweight Classic or 500cc GP category. This year, Joyce wanted a new challenge, so he entered it in the Vintage Two class. Atlanta's Buff Harsh has dominated this class the last two years on his Todd Henning 350cc Honda. The two have met three times this year prior to round 19, with Joyce holding a two-wins-toone advantage over the fast Honda. However, that one win of Harsh's was here at Talladega, in the race held in April. The two rivals lined up side by side on the front row, with somewhat of a spoiler to their right: Team Steve-O's Eric Cook (on the WKR Honda), who has also found himself right in the middle of the points battle in Vintage Two, having won a couple of races of late. As the Vintage Two crowd blasted off the line, Joyce took the holeshot and held it until the fast back sweeper, when Harsh motored Talladega Grand Prix Raceway: Steve Staser (911), Robert Macaulay (373), Scott McCain (33) and Charlie McEwan (496) all fight for positions in the tight tum one at WERA Vintage's last stop In 2002 at the Alabama track. c U a I e n e __ s .
