Fast Fridays Speedway: Handicap main-event winner Ian Essary (24) leads Greg Hooten Jr. (212) and Matt Browne (29) through the first turn in Auburn, California. younger Evans in the middle of three and four. years of accumulated injuries by winning the Division Two main event after a battle with David Baker and Devin Defreece. In the Youth Speedway mains, Mark Carrillo made his Arai sponsor proud when he survived a restart to win the Division One trophy from his 50-yard Handicap starting position. Hunter Morris beat Ricky Felicia and Bruce Bast to the Division Two trophy, and diminutive Division Three Youth rookie Bryce Olney won the first main-event trophy of his young Itelia then set out after the elder Evans. Italia seemed to have an edge on Nick, going into three faster, but Nick would get better drives off four to hold the youngster at bay down the front straight. This rubber-band affair continued for eight full laps. A short distance back, Ben Evans and Marshall were waging their own battle for third, while Vanderkooi ran a lonely fifth. Going into turn three on lap eight, Italja ran it in under NiCk, who bent his bike in half and tried to cut back under Italia exiting four. Italia held him off and led past the white fiag. Nick had a head of steam from his superior run off turn four and was dosing fast. Heading into turn one, Nick carried more entry speed and drew even at the corner's midpoint, but Italia enjoyed a smoother exit off two and gapped Nick down the back stretch. Italia raced unmolested to the checkered fiag. Nick Evans settled for a well-deserved but slightly disappointing second. Marshall came home third, in front of Ben, with Vanderkooi fifth. "That was fun," said Italia. Off to Illinois.... career. Results SCR: 1. Bobby Hedden (OM); 2. Bart 8lIst (Jaw): 3. Sc:ott Brant (Jaw); 4. Mike Faria (OMI. HOCP: 1. Ian Essary (Jaw): 2. The Sun Sets on ltalia's Pro-Sport Career By CRAIG GRISMORE GAliON, OH, AUG. 24 The Sunset Rambiers Motorcycle Club hosted another "outlaw" short-track race at their c1ubgrounds in Galion, Ohio, on Saturday night. Once again, their little "action" track lived up to its reputation, providing enough thrills and spills to keep even the most jaded of spectators on the edge of their hillside seats. The Pro-class contest was the night's featured attraction, as 2002 AMA Hotshoe Series champion Charlie Italia was in attendance; the familiar short track was serving as a last practice before his Grand National debut at Springfield. Plenty of heavyweight sparring partners were on hand to ensure Charlie got an adequate workout before his trip to Illinois. Ohio's top Amateur Ricky Marshall lined up on the front row with Italia; Marshall won all three classes at the last race held here. Add in more former' winners with Brad Vanderkooi and the brother combo of Nick and Ben Evans, and you have all the ingredients needed to create a challenge that would send Italia out in style. The riders went to the line. The Pro~c1ass cash awaited the victor. Italia's little "warmup" race had the feel of an all·out, no·holds·barred short-track war. Bikes revved, elbows up - the light went green, and the pack roared off the line, with Marshall first. Cones flew and bars banged as the pack raced through turn one. Down the back straight and through turn three, Marshall maintained the lead and was first to greet the red flag. ... Red flag? "I didn't jump," said Marshall iater. Sunset Ramblers officials saw it differentiy, however, and sent Marshall to the penalty line. The restart belonged to Nick Evans, who gated just in front of his little brother Ben. Italia started third but soon passed'the 56 SEPTEMBER 18. 2002' cue Starwest Motocross Park: Quint Betts (center) poses with a couple of his friends in front of the prize he won - a CR125, courtesy of West Coast Motorsports and FMF - In Moreno Valley, California. Starwest Motocross Park Betts Doubles Down By MIKE ANO BARBARA PALUZZI MORENO VALlEY, CA, AUG. 24 Vet rider Quint Betts was a winner off and on the track Saturday night at Starwest. Betts had his work cut out for him in the Vet class, fac· ing some tough competition from Brian Miller. In the first mota, Betts took the early lead and Miller found himself at the back of the pack. By lap three, Betts was on his way to victory, but a slide· out would leave the door open for Miller to take over the lead. Miller took the mota win, followed by Betts and Jay Siddall. Miller took the second·moto holeshot, fol· lowed by Betts. Miller was able to hold off Betts for three iaps before Betts made his pass in the whoop section to take the lead. Betts took the mota win and the overall, with Miller second and Siddall third. For Betts, the overall r----------------------.,...--~c_--------~w a: o ;:;; '" ~ :I: "- win was great, but what came later in the evening was priceless. Daton Beavers impressed the crowd in the 125cc Pro class. In the first mota, Mike Mead· ows nailed the holeshot, followed by Beavers. Meadows heid off Beavers until the fourth lap, when Beavers carefully planned his pass by sweeping wide in a tum and taking over the lead. Beavers took the win, followed by Meadows and Patrick Terry. In the second mota, Timothy Berger absconded with the holeshot, foliowed by Beavers, who quickly made his pass down the back straightaway and took over the lead. Lap after lap, Beavers got the crowd's attention with his unique riding style and speed. Beavers took the win and the cash, followed by Meadows and Terry. Nick Paluzzi took the overall win in the 85cc Novice class despite some tough competition from Buddy Greene. In the first mota, Brent Bohanon flew to the front, with Paluzzi close behind. Paluzzi made his move quickly in the comer and took the iead. Paiuzzi started to gain some breathing room, with Bohanon and Greene mixing it up for second. Paluzzi took the win, followed by Bohanon and Greene. In the second mota, Paluzzi took his Kawasaki to the front, with Bohanon and Greene close behind. Greene quickly made his pass on Bohanan in the back section to take over second and then set his sights on Paluzzi. For the next four laps, Paluzzi looked strong, with Greene keeping the pressure on. The checkered flag came out and Paluzzi was able to hold on for the win, followed by Greene and Cody Tithof. Bohanan suffered some mechan· ical problems and was unable to finish. Thanks to West Coast Motorsports and FMF, the night ended with some lucky riders going home with an extra set of wheels. A drawing was held and many prizes were given away, but the grand prize was a 125cc FMF Honda, and guess who took the win: none other than Betts. Jake Canada took home a brand-new Honda 250, and on the Pee Wee track, Tyler Wilson also took home a 250. Results SmaD Track 50 SlRTR (4-6): I. Chanz Early (KTM): 2. Hunter McCall (Yam); 3.
