Kennewick Washington Fairgrounds DeAtleys Crush 'em at Kennewick Invit'l By LfE LrvESEY KENNEWICK, WA, AUG. 20 More than 5000 fans watched Sam and Matt DeAtley battle for the top podium spots in the 80cc D class under the lights at Shumate Motorsports/DeVol Engineering Kennewick Invitational. The brothers were both coming off top-10 finishes at Loretta Lynn's and looked faster than ever. Sam was quickest out of the gate in moto one, followed by his younger brother Matt. The two quickly got ahead of the competition, followed by Scott Wooiey and Nick Van Sickle. Matt showed his brother a wheel in every corner until he got past Sam on lap four by clearing the huge triple. The lighter DeAtley used his weight-to-horsepower advantage to stay in front for good. When asked, Matt said it was the first time he had beaten his brother in a race and that "it felt really great."' The DeAtleys came back in moto two to settle the score. Sam stayed on the gas longer going into the first turn for the lead. Matt stayed right on his wheels. Sam was quicker through the whoops, but Matt was quicker on the triple. and only block-passing by Sam kept Matt from getting around. Matt got past Sam on lap four and did some block-passing of his own. but Sam retook the lead in the late going for the win. National four-stroke rider Brandon Thomas got to tum one first in the first moto of the combined Pro/Intermediate Unlimited contest and never looked back. Reported turning problems with the 2002 Red 450 weren't visible to the fans. Thomas had the CRF carving like a hot knife through butter on the punishing arenacross track. DeVol-backed Paul Conner and Royce DeVol kept Thomas honest but couldn't catch up. Intermediate Kyle Versteeg got in front of Thomas in the second moto. Versteeg led for four laps; then Thomas got the thumper past him on the long straight. Versteeg stayed close to Thomas until he parked the CR250 past the berm out by the rodeo stock. Versteeg got back on and placed first in the Intermediate class. Another family feud raged in the 50cc Unlimited class, between Hunter and Cody Evanson. The two cousins chased each other all night. Hunter went second and first for the top spot. Shumate's Cody traded piaces with Hunter, scoring a first and a second for the next spot. Vance Davis placed third. The Junior Unlimited class had enough crashes to look more like a WWE event than a motocross. Riders were dropping like Enron stock. Sam DeAtley took the holeshot in moto one on a KXl00. DeVol's Sean Wilson managed to get ahead of DeAtley, but the wicked track design by DeVol ate him up. DeAtley stretched it out, followed by Travis Mullins and Cade Graber. DeAtley was first to the tum in moto two. Mullins got around DeAtley when the latter uncharacteristically missed a shift. DeAtley clawed back and got past when he picked a much faster line through some lappers. The overall spots went to DeAtley, Mullins and Shumate's Tyson Ralston. Results 50 UIl: I. Arrowhead Motor Speedway Brant, Yarrow Headline Arrowhead Lineup By Five Junior Speedway riders were on hand, and it was Dario Galvin who showed the field the way home. Krystal Cramer was second, with Jason Ramirez third. Rounding out the field were Jay Ricketts and Tim Gomez. Rohn Zellner took the gold in the Division Two main, topping Curry and Hector Quevedo. Division II B honors went to Geoff Herkner, with Rusty Hall and Steve Dzaidus second and third. It took up-and-comer Jimmy Wood one lap to get around Joe Steffan, and then it was his race to win or lose in the Division One flattrack main. Fortunately for him, he was right on target, and though Steffan gave it his best shot, he would have to settle for second. Jim Rosa knocked on the door the whole way but nobody made a mistake and the show money was his. There were some smaller flat-track bikes on hand, and it went right down to the wire when Kurt Speir tried to outdrag Amanda Bryant to the checkered flag. They tangled and both went into the wall on the front straightaway. It was a hard hit, and Bryant got the worst of it. When ail was said and done, the win was hers, but she paid the price with a very badly injured knee. Results ELAINE JONES SAN BERNARDINO, CA, AUG. 21 Scott Brant almost came away with a double win on Wednesday night, but Bryan Varrow rained on his parade as he took the win in the Handicap main. To get to the mains, riders first have to work their way up the program. Getting direct transfers to the Scratch main were "Fast" Ed Castro and Brant (from the first semi) and Shaun Harmatiuk and Varrow (from the second semi). The Consi saw the pole go to "Rockin'" Richard Jones, with Jonathan Curry in two and Randy "Cowboy" Krips in three. Rick Valdez had also qualified but was unable to start. The gate went to Krips, who built a commanding lead. Jones was running a solid second when a worn tire caused him to spin out, and that was ail Curry needed to take second. The Scratch main had Castro on the pole. with Brant in two and Yarrow and Harmatiuk on the outside. It was gate and race to Brant. Cast to tried to take him on the outside but just couldn't make up the extra distance against Brant's very fast GM. Yarrow was third, with Harmatiuk fourth. The Handicap main had Valdez on the zero. Harmatiuk and Varrow shared the 20. Krips was on the 30. Castro and Brant were on the 50. Varrow went out hard, with Harmatiuk chasing him. Brant and Castro were on the move from the long yardage, and with three laps down, Brant was already running third. Brant made a pass on Harmatiuk as the white flag came out and set his sights on Yarrow. Time ran out and he would have to settle for second. On back, it was Harmatiuk, Castro, Valdez and Krips. EI Cajon MX Park Build It - And They Will Race On It By HOMER EUBANKS EL CAJON, CA, AUG. 23 "Build it - and they will race on it!" EI Cajon MX Park was built as a practice track, and it turned out to be a nice one, especially with ali the amenities close by. In fact, expansion construction is going on right now. It didn't take long, though, for the regular riders to want to test each other's speed at the track. And so a new racetrack is born! Not being the largest of tracks, and to lessen the congestion, the night events are split into Pee Wee Nights and Big-Bike Nights, on altemating weekends. This past Friday was Big-Bike Night, which drew 67 riders to compete in 18 classes. In the 250cc Intermediate contest, it was Dustin Hollenbeck and Matt Moore providing the action. At the end of the event, Moore had to settle for second, although he had threatened Hollenbeck throughout both motos. Third overall went to Arthur Van Order, who held off Dustin Watson in the first moto; then Watson didn't show for moto two. Robert Golden and Jake Oswald took two class wins apiece. Golden rode in the 125cc Novice and Open classes, taking wins in all four events. In the Novice class, the battle was for second, as David Kenlon outdueled Derek Van Order for the spot in moto one. Derek put things in order for round two, dropping Kenlon to third overall. Steve Rich rode for repeat fourth-place finishes, ahead of Skip Fitch. Having no other Pros to battle with, Tim Beaty took the 125cc class by default. Beaty later came out on a Modified XR50 and took the checkers from Dylan Crower. Crower was to find the competition in the 65cc Beginner (0- 16) class hard to handle as well. Clayton Murilio rode his Suzuki to repeat victories, with Dustin Slade trailing in both events. Kyle Schaaf placed third, ahead of Sonny Arviso, with Crower going 5·6 in the event for fifth overall. Dan Virgilio had to earn his Veteran Novice Over 40 overall honors. Tony Gomez scored first after going unheaded in the first moto. Virgilio crossed over second, with Rick Zeigler third. Virgilio didn't play around in the finai moto; he jumped out early, with Zeigier again trailing. Gomez must have proved his point in moto one and djdn't race the second event. II: U II: I _ n In the Veteran Intermediate Over 40 class, it was another Virgilio taking the top spot on the podium. This time it was Bruce Virgilio. who went 1-1 for the overall.
