Honda Motorsports/Arai/Alpinestars/McAllister Motorsports-sponsored Honda 150 powered dirt-tracker eamed the youngster $100, posted by class sponsor CHM Exhausts. There would be no runaway winner in the Premier class. Casey Yarrow and his Rose ville Cycle/American Honda/Avon Tyres/Motomaster Brakes/Yarrow Racing CRF450R were in top form. After winning the Premier heat, the Fairfield resident then set fast time in Superpole, thus eaming a position of choice on the front row for the main. A solid launch and grim, elbows-high determination through the first turn maintained Yarrow's bid for the winner's share of a $ 1000 purse posted by STTARS. Bagnis wouldn't allow the kid a clean sweep on the day without a fight. While the Honda duo puUed away from the field, only a bikelength separated the pair at the front. Yarrow protected his lead without error, allowing 80gms no opening. But Bagnis wasn't waiting around for a gift from Yarrow, as he repeatedly drove past, still on the gas as Yarrow applied the brakes for a corner, only to overshoot the apex and hand the lead right back. This happened a number of times without contact in an awesome display of clean, exciting action between skilled competitors. As the laps wound down, however, Bagnis' attacks became more desperate. Finally muscling his way past two turns before the white flag, Bagnis opened a four-bikelength gap as they came through the dirt section for the final time. The Argentinean then bobbled in a loamy rut and stalled his engine. Yarrow, riding in his wheel tracks, ran up behind and stalled his bike as weU. It had become a race of who could start his machine first. Both men were still kickin' when Fasst Co./Orange County Honda/Pro CirCUit-sponsored Gary Trachy came from 12 seconds back to claim the win aboard his Honda CR500. AI Salaveria, on the Scuderia West/Suomy/Motion Pro/Braking-backed two-stroke KTM 380 was another beneficiary of the last-lap madness, with Bagnis relighting in time to grab the final podium position. Canadian National Series Round 8: Walton Motocross Track Roy, Fisher Kings of Canada Pacific Yamaha's Hagseth was running in third when Lange hit a rut on the straightaway and crashed, ending his race and handing Hagseth second place. Third-place series contender Dehaan rode in third for much of the race, holding off Jeremy Israel and Chuck Mesley. Eventually Mesley got by DeHaan, but he crashed soon after. With Mesley gone, a fierce battle raged between Dehaan and Dub<; ; Dub<; made the pass to finish fourth. It was Morgan, Hagseth, Israel, Dub.. and Dehaan at the checkers. Roy crossed the line in sixth, earning himself enough points for the title. Mota two came down to the now-familiar battle of Roy and Morgan. While Chad Pederson got the holeshot, he had Dub<;, Morgan and Roy hot on his heels. Within two laps, Roy had taken the lead, while Morgan had moved into second. Dub<; reeled in fourth-placed rider Mike Treadwell, needing to put some distance between himself and Hagseth. The Pacific Yamaha team had done the math and pushed Hagseth to pass Treadwell. Hagseth stole fourth and seemed to slow a little. Roy and Morgan left the rest of the pack behind, a reminder of the series domination that began for team Blackfoot in Regina. By AwSON KENNEDY WALTON, ON, CANADA, AUG. 18 Jean-Sebastien Roy proved he's still the champ, as he claimed his second 250cc Canadian National title in two years. Coors Light Suzuki rider Derrick Fisher earned his first number-one Pro plate, Winning the 125cc East series. Heading to Walton, Roy had all but wrapped up his second 250cc title, entering the moto with a 36-point lead. While the top two spots belonged to the Blackfoot boys, the rest of the top-10 standings were tight. Thirteen points separated third-placed Marco Dub... fourth-piaced Brad Hagseth, fifthplaced Doug Dehaan, and sixth-placed Lance Smail, who was forced to miss the final round due to a family illness. In the first 250cc moto, Roy and teammate Blair Morgan were out front from the start. Kawasaki's Darcy Lange, sidelined for much of the season with an injury, was running in third_ It didn't take long for Morgan to move into the lead. Roy was on the gas, trying to keep his teammate in sight, when he went down. Lange was right there to inherit second place. Walton Motoc:rosa Tracie The series' top four finishers - Blair Morgan (2), Marco Dub4\ (6), Brad Hagseth (11) and Jean-Sebastien Roy (1) - leave the line together at the start of the second 250cc Pro molo at the final round of the canadian National Series In Walton, Ontarlo_ 44 SEPTEMBER 18, 2002' cue • • n • _ • The final podium of the year was a familiar one: Roy took the win, with Morgan second and Dub.. third. Despite Dub"'s numerous podium finishes, it was Hagseth who took third place in the series - by only one point. Entering the final round of the 125cc East series, Fisher had a 12-point lead over KTM's Treadwell. With Richmond Racing Kawasaki's Chad Johnson out for the season, the team brought up American Gavin Gracyk, who took the overall win with 1-1 moto finishes. In moto one, Gracyk got a great start and ran with it. Fellow American rider Brad Erick Smith also got a great start and was running in second place on the early laps. With Gracyk out front, it didn't take long for Fisher to work his way up from a med.iocre start to fourth place. Defending champ Simon Homans was third, holding off KTM's lain Hayden and Fisher. Homans kept the pressure on KTM's Smith and made the pass for second place. Fisher followed suit, catching up and passing Smith for third. Fisher got by Homans, who then had his hands full with Smith; Smith fought and regained the third spot. Treadwell, the only other 125cc rider with a clear shot at the title, had a bad first moto, finishing in ninth place. Fisher headed into moto two with a 22point lead. All he needed to do was finish the moto, earn a few points and hope Treadwell didn't take the win. That was easier said than done. Homans was first off the gate, with Fisher, Ryan Gauld and Gracyk in tow. Fisher was catching Hamans when it became clear he had a mechanical problem. He started losing positions, and eventually he was just putting In laps. It was the perfect scenario for Tread- well to take the win and the title. However, Treadwell had gotten another bad start and was just inside the top 10 when Fisher started falling off the pace. Treadwell fought hard and worked his way up to sixth place, but by then Gracyk and the leaders were gone. Treadwell's sixth-place finish, combined with his ninth in the first moto, was not enough to deny Fisher his first championship. In the end, despite a Walton podium loaded with Americans and a 2-33 record for the day, Fisher took the series overall with a seven-point lead over Treadwell, who had to settle for second. much like in 2001, while Hamans worked his way up from a dismal round-one start to finish third in-the points.
