other at the entrance to tum one. On lap two, Del Turco drove around the outside of Grace leading onto the front straight in what seemed to be an effort to break dear. Unfortunately for Del Turco, Grace caught the draft and was able get a tow into tum one to keep in close touch for the lead. Grace and Del Turco swapped the lead for the next two laps, with just inches between them, leaving Mark Applegate alone in third. By halfway, Del Turco had broken away and built such a gap on Grace that Grace wasn't going to be able to use the frontstraight draft to gain any advantage. Back in the field, many other battles were going on, with as many as six or seven riders jockeying for position. Del Turco's lead wasn't to be challenged for the rest of the race, which left Grace with second and Applegate in third. After the race, Del Turco said his Yamaha R6 had more midrange than Grace's Kawasaki and he was able to make up ground on Grace exiting comers and railing through tum one. In the Race of the Rockies, Mark Nudelman'snared the holeshot from the second row to lead the group into tum one. His lead what short-lived, as Dan Turner whee lied out of tum four past Nudelman for the lead. With points leader Ricky Orlando absent, Turner was not to be challenged the rest of the race. Dennie Burke and Doug Vickery were the next to have at Nudelman. and by lap one it was Turner, Burke, Vickery, Nudelman and Mike Applegate. By lap four, a hard-charging Travis Graham had worked his way to sixth and dearly was looking for more. On lap six, Graham caught Applegate, while Vickery dispatched Burke. Graham got around Applegate by the halfway point for fourth, just before Applegate suffered some trouble with his Yamaha. The next with bike trouble was Vickery, who pulled into the pits but then retumed a couple of laps later to limp around, collecting just a few points. Dlivid HlIlImlirk (KlIw). Spring Creek MX Park A Short Story By CONNIE JOHNSON MILLVILLE, MN, AUG. 16 Just under 1000 riders entered the Donny Schmidt Memorial Race at Spring Creek MX Park. The amateur race was held on Friday just before the 10th round of the AMA Chevy Trucks U.S. MX Championship. Getting in some early practice for the "Big Show," Andrew Short raced in the J 6-24 A and J 25cc A classes. Short put his Suzuki out in front early in the 16-24 A contest and kept his distance from the other racers. Matthew Maier stayed close for a lap but couldn't keep up the pace. Maier finished second on his Suzuki, followed by KTM-mounted Jesse Johnson and Yamaha riders Dennis Eckstrom and Dan Weinkauf. Maier absconded with the holeshot in the second moto, but Short came back from a midpack start and flew past the unsuspecting Maier in the whoops, Maier hung on to second, with Weinkauf taking third and Johnson fourth. Shane Lusk put in a good performance on his Kawasaki for fifth.
