It was his ninth overall victory of the year, which tied Steve Lamson's record of nine overall 125cc wins in 1995. "I really had fun today," said Stewart, who also became the first· ever African-American AMA Champion. "On Saturday, it looked like the conditions were going to be pretty bad, but the skies cleared up today and the promoters did a nice job getting the track ready. My KX125 was awesome; I felt really good today and I'm stoked to win the title. Now the pressure's off of me and I'm looking forward to going out and trying to win the next two motos at Steel City." Joining Stewart on the overall podium were Suzuki's Branden Jesseman, who put together two solid motos (2-4) for second place, and Fonseca, who went 3-5 for third. The podium finish for Jesseman was his seventh of the year, and he pulls to within four points of Reed for second place in the overall 125cc points chase. Fonseca, who recorded his second podium finish of the year (Southwick being the first), is in fourth place overall - 20 points behind Jesseman. One of the better battles of the day in the 125cc class was between Fon· seca and Pro Circuit/Kawasaki/Chevy 12 SEPTEMBER 4, 2002' cue Trucks' Eric Sorby. The two went at each other hard on lap eight of the first moto, dicing for third place - a battle that Fonseca would eventually win, with Sorby finishing fourth. And holding off the two combatants in a colorful display of battling brands was Jesseman. Said Jesseman of his plan for the second moto: "Yeah, man, I'm just going to go out and try to get a good start, keep it on two wheels, pick up the pace a little bit and hopefully come out on top." With the title out of the way, the 19,304 fans in attendance were amped for a real burner. And the riders didn't disappoint, as Reed again took advantage of a powerful start on the YZ250F four-stroke and got out to an early lead.
