win, followed by Monjaras, Everett Vangsnes, Fernando Santos and Christian Prida. The second-moto holeshot belonged to Mexico's Ramiro Perez, who had crashed out in the first moto after an overly aggressive pass on KTM-mounted Vangsnes. Perez went on for the second-mota win, but a DNF in the first moto kept him off the podium. James fell off the pace and settled for third, giving him second on the day, with Prida and Santos rounding out the top five. The Open Intermediate race was quite intense. The pack went speeding into the first turn led by Suzuki-mounted Paul Pederson and Prida. Suddenly, Pederson's wheel blew out the top of the berm, forcing him to fall over on Prida. Yamaha thumper pilot Bill Russell narrowly escaped the crash and finished 1-1, giving him a well·deserved first overall. Santos finished second with a 2-3 tally, while Port Isabel's Levi Woolverton proved that consistency pays off by taking third on a 3-4 score. Chris Clark owned the 250cc Beginner class after mopping up his competition with 10 perfect laps and a 1-1 score. Robert Kruger was the only rider who could keep Clark in sight, but he didn't catch him; Kruger went 2-2 on the day. Suzuki-mounted nice guy Ramiro Martinez also put his boots on the podium, finishing third overall on a 4-3 tally. In the 125cc Novice class, young gun Michael Chandler won both his races after an epic battle with Mike Heggie. Lap aher lap, these guys would mix it up, swapping posi· tions and keeping the crowd interested until arm pump set in and forced Heggie to back off. Cycle Shop/Brownsville-backed Alfredo Escovar and his trusty Husqvarna 250 found out that just finishing the race under these hot conditions is a victory in itself. Another noteworthy race on the day was between 50cc Senior racers Cesar Garcia and Joey Pardo of South Padre Island. These kids went back and forth nonstop all ahernoon, but it was Garcia who came out on top this time, winning the class on a 1-1 score. Results 50 JR: I, Clitia VUllirrelil (Suz); 2. Schantzen topped his third-place finish in the Supermini class with two moto wins and the overall victory in the competitive 85cc Mini (12-15) class at the MJ's High Performance Products·sponsored event, which drew more than 800 entries. The track was in prime con· dition - even better than John Martin's usual high standards - with less-choppy bumps due to slightly drier weather than on previous weekends. Schantzen blitzed to the front of the 38rider field as the Mini (12-15) class hit the track for the first moto. Bruce Dehn latched on to second place early on and gave chase, but Schantzen prevailed. Chad Schmidt overtook Craig Radle late in the race to nab third. Nolan Radle crossed the finish line behind Craig to take fihh on his Yamaha. Dehn got a nice holeshot in the second moto, but Schantzen took over before the end of the first lap. Dehn kept the pressure on, but again Schantzen prevailed. Schmidt was not far off the pace for a strong third, with Erickson and Radle trading mota finishes this time out. Iowan Mike Carlson pulled a sweet holeshot on his RM250 to lead the Vet A riders through the first tum. Perennial hotshot Bruce Gates took control before the first lap was IJ~@~ @[]:{]o@ Friday, Sept. 6: Gates Open 1:00 pm (S"'I· By ROlFE OrrERNESS KENWORTHY'S HOTO(ROSS PARK N MOTOCIIO• • • u~'"' • .-oN.OIIS W'E S INFORMATION: 1-937-335-4763 WNW. kenworthysmxpark. com No Pets, Bicycles, Glass, Video Cameras cue' e n e _ s AUGUST 28.2002 75
