even half-completed. He started to run off with
the win, as Craig Schwan moved in to challenge Carlson. Dan Luloff was also looking
strong as he closed in. At the checkered flag,
it was Gates with i!I big margin over Schwarz.
Luloff displaced Carlson for third, and Michael
Nathe took fifth.
Dan Benham, out to make up for his firstmoto seventh, led the field through the first
tum in moto two. Gates hammered by in short
order to take the lead, locked into warp speed
and pulled away. Benham came lUlder attack,
with Schwarz and Luloff puttin' the hurt on
him during the next lap. That was how they
finished, with Mike Johnson taking fifth.
The talent-laden 250cc A class had more
than 30 entries. Benjamin Johnson blasted
through the first tum first in the first moto. Pat
Donaho motored into the lead on his CR450
early on the first lap, with snowcross professional Trevor John displacing Benjamin for
second. Within another lap, John took over
the lead and Donaho was under attack by
Wisconsin's Kurt Jennison. Donaho failed to
fend off the attack and soon there was another
challenge. Gates, moving up strongly after a
mediocre start. got by on the last lap to nab
third_ Mike Kann trailed Donaho for fifth.
Jennison jumped out front in the second
moto, but John soon motored into the lead.
Jennison was then pressured by Kann and a
hard-charging Gates. When they hit the
finish line, Gates ended up second. Kann led
(Yom).

The gate went to Schwartz, who held off the

The second Scratch semi had Hamill on
the pole. with Scott Brant in two. Eric Carrillo
and Bryan Yarrow were in three and four. It

second. Varrow and Carrillo were slated for
the Consl.

Maximoff Maxin'
at Milan
By ARTMAoRY
MILAN, MI, AUG. 2
Matt Maximoff once again took racing to the
maximum at the Friday night motocross in
Milan. The new father's newbom, Alexie, was
watching as Dad took the wins in the 250cc
Expert, 125cc Expert and Veterans Over 25
classes on his Tech-Care backed Ff,S Suzuki.
In the 250cc Expert class, contender
Trevor Gundlach gave Maximoff a run for his
money aboard his CRF450R but was never
able to catch him. Jason McLosky also gave it
an eamest try on his Vamaha but couldn't get
past either Maximoff or Gundlach. Scott Zielenski whipped his Suzuki around, trying to
get near the leaders, but a crash e2lirly on in
the first mota left him hurtin' for certain.
In the 125cc Expert class, Maximoff again
proved unbeatable, as he got off to a great
start and stepped up his pace as the laps wore
on. He charged into the comers with the bars
dragging on the grolUld and exited the comers
leaving a huge spray of the moist Milan sand
behind him. David Merrill was able to keep
Maximoff in sight during moto two. Merrill
swapped second- and third-place moto finishes with Yamaha racer Stevie "Wonder" Y2liTOSZ.
In the first moto, Varosz was strong, staying in
second place and in front of the rest of the
pack. Contender Kirk Seabolt looked strong in
practice, but a crash landing off the triple
jump took Seabolt's CRF450R out of service
for the evening. Competing on 2Ii borrowed
bike, Seabolt gave it a great try, but the combination of a borrowed bike and an apparent
injury from the crash left him off the pace.
In the Veterans Over 25 class, Maximoff
took on John R.D. Carr, Jasin Kjoller and Dan
Van Thomme. Carr gave Maximoff the most
challenge as he flew around the course on his
Monroe Motorsports RM. Carr took second
place in both motos. Tech-Care technician
JasinKjolier pressured Carr early during the
second moto but settled for third-place finishes in both motos.
The 2002 MRA Championship Motocross
Series has passed the halfway point and the
racing is becoming more intense as competitors are not only are reaching peak racing
condition but are also trying to get their sea·
son points tallies in order. Milan Cycle City
hosts half of the series, with the other half
conducted at Delta Raceway. Series winners
receive recognition at the annual awards ban-
