McAllen Racing Motor Sports Park Vallejo Rattles 'em and Snakes the Win McAllen Racing Motor Sports Park: Mexico's Miguel Herrera placed third in the Open Pro class at round three of the Summer Series in McAllen, Texas. This up-and-coming rider is on fire lately. The 60cc-c1ass victory belonged to KTM rider Christian Bosada after a great race with Andrew Gomez and Brandon Ortega. In the 50cc Senior class, Joey Pardo and Cesar Garcia Lopez have been mixing it up over first at several south Texas tracks. This race win went to Lopez, as he shut the door on Pardo and the rest of the class. When the awards presentation was finally finished, this author and Cary Ray walked over to the Pro Shop, where he happened to notice a 4-foot-long rattlesnake that just beat us through the door and then hid under a Renthal handlebar display. Cary calmly asked if the snake was someone's pet; within three seconds, the shop was empty. Results By GARY T. OBER 50 JR: 1. Bryant Stites (Pol): 2. Mark MlIldomtdo (Lem): 3. MCALLEN, TX, JULY 27 This was the third race of the six-round Summer Series held at night, under the lights of the McAllen Racing Motor Sports complex. The series is sponsored by McAllen Motor World, Valley Skydive, Media Man Productions, South Texas Used Cycles, and Suzuki of McAllen. The series features a $5000 cash purse, loads of prizes, and a bad-to-the-bone skydiving demonstration at every race! The track was in great shape, thanks to Ernesto ZarazuB, Mando Gutierrez, Joe Leal and the track staff. Honda Galleria of Mexico/Acerbis/Pro CircuitfTag/Klotz-backed Erick Vallejo was all business, taking the Open Expert cash purse, followed by fellow Mexican superstar Pedro "Speedy· Gonzalez. The Axo/Shoei/Bill's Pipes/Scott/RG3 Suspension-backed Gonzalez pulled the first-moto holeshot and the early lead on a borrowed KTM 250 but was no match for Vallejo, and he settled in for a comfortable second in both motos. Gonzalez is still getting back up to speed after breaking his femur during the arenacross season. Vallejo went on to win both motos uncontested, and he whipped his CR250 for the crowd. Gonzalez also busted out a classic heel-clicker over the finish-line tabletop jump, even though his bike was giving him some problems. Suzuki of McAllen/MSRfTucker Rocky-backed Bryan Monjaras gave it his all, but a third-place finish in the first mota was the best he could do for the night. Mexico's Miguel Herrera had a great race, finishing out with a 4-3 score and just edging out Monjaras, who finished fourth in mota two. Honda-mounted Ramiro Perez Bazan rounded out the top five in both Expert motos. Twelve bikes lined up for the alwaysintense 80cc Beginner ciass, with CR80mounted Ricardo Daniel Guajardo leading the way to the checkers in both motos. Suzuki pilots Alfonso Lumbreras and Carlos Gutierrez kept within striking distance the entire race but could not make it happen. John David Franz and Michael Maldonado finished fourth and fifth overall, while young charger Christian Bosada took sixth on the day. 50 SR: 1. Cesar A. Gardll Lopez (Cob): 2. Joey Pardo (Pol); 3. Portersville AWRCS Bennett Surfs to Round Three Win thick, which kept visibility down to a bare minimum. J.T. Bennett held the lead early on. Close behind him were Yamaha rider Josh Lojak and Suzuki rider John Barber. Bennett's lead gave him a slight advantage over the other riders: less dust, which helped him lengthen the lead every lap en route to the overall win. Barber refused to let up and held on to Bennett for much of the race, placing second overall. On the third lap, Lojak ran into a few problems (read: "trees"), which cost him. the race and a few injured ribs. Lojak is optimistic and hopes to be back for the next AWRCS event, though he'll wait out the next one to get back to 100 percent, if necessary. Bennett commented that the track was the best one yet - which he's been saying after each race - and added, "Keep up the good work, Chuck.· Bennett enjoys racing in the tight woods and does it well. "The GNCCs are just getting too wide open: the MSR/WER/Lojak Yamaha/ScottI Pirelli-backed Bennett stated. "It's like a three-hour motocross. This [AWRCSI is off· road racing." Mentioning that the heat made the race more challenging, Barber felt that Greenlee laid out an "awesome" track. "He kept it challenging and tough." Extreme Suzuki/Smith Power Sport/MX Tech Suspension-backed Barber said. "That keeps it more fun and makes you push harder for the win." Russ Cherry, Dan Ford, Ron Corsello, Bill Miller and Rich Miller are all enduro enthusiasts, and they all mentioned that they normally don't ride hare scrambles because they're too wide open, but they all gave high marks to Greenlee's course and are thinking about finishing the series. The next race will be held on August 25 at Cable Creek, Ohio - the site of the first race, but this event could offer a whole new course without the heavy downpours that soaked that event. By JaSTIN WHARTON PORTLAND, OR, JULY 25 Despite a slightly smaller turnout than usual due to the Washougal Nationals, there were still more than a few die-hards who raced first at the Amateur Days in the day, and then proceeded to Delta Park in the evening. The most exciting race of the day was the battle between Mini Connection's Kasey Wallace and Cobra-mounted Brody Thom in the 50cc (7-8) class. Grabbing the holeshot in moto one was the Wulfsport/Service Tire/Team Dirty Girls' Sierra Bragg, followed by Thom, Wallace and Jason Doane. It wasn't even half a lap before Bragg had been relocated to fifth place, and Thom and Wallace had begun to get into a race of their own. The two were never more than two seconds apart throughout the entire moto, as they put a huge lead on the rest of the field. When the checkered came out, it was Thom with the win and Wallace right behind him. Tyler Webb finished third after passing Doane when the latter crashed. Doane still garnered fourth, and rounding out the top five was Bragg. In the second moto, it was once again Polini rider Bragg nabbing the holeshot, and repeating her moto-one performance, she was in fifth by the time the second lap rolled around. Thorn and Wallace were right back out front again, trying to get that precious second-moto win. While the two pulled away with the first and second spots, there was a great race going on between Doane and Webb. Each one was trying to take home that thirdplace trophy, and they battled all the way to Results By GRETCHEN ORTON PORTERSVILLE, PA, JULY 21 Round three of the Lojak Yamaha Racing/Grove City Motorsports/Augustine KTM/Five Star Cycle/WER/FMF/Ron Hartman Concrete/Pirelli/DP Breaks/Kosmic Signs f, Designs/Thor/Renthal-sponsored American Woods Racing Series (AWRCS) was held in Portersville. Pennsylvania. near Moraine State Park. At only five miles, this course may have been short, but mix in some tight wooded trails with the dust and g3-degree heat and you have one tough race. Promoter Chuck Greenlee laid out the racecourse, with a little help on the grasstrack by Russ Cherry and friends. The start was set back in a secluded field that instantly sent the riders into a tight, twisting trail and then up into the grasstrack. No mud was to be found, but the dust was AA O/A: I. J.T. Bear Hollow Castleman, Ketchum Capture 1st Conquests By JEFFREY KETCHaM LLVINGSTON, TN, JULY 21 The fifth round of the Mid·South Summer Youth Camp visited a brand-new site in livingston, Tennessee. It was the hottest race day so far, but the dirt was perfect, the sun was shining, and it was a great day to race. The Mini course was about half a mile long. It went down to one mudhole and then cue I .. n e vv so AUGUST 28,2002 71
