BY WOODY ECKES Thunder Cross Motorsports Complex: Matt Wall won the second moto of the 50cc (7-8) class and the overall at round six of the Thunder Cross Saturday Night Series in Okeechobee, Florida. 70 AUGUST 28, 2002' cue • II n II _ lIS NEilLSVilLE, WI, JULY 20 "This is what a dirt track used to be like in the good old days - a cushion track, not a slippery, narrow groove, like most tracks," said leland Johnson, a rider of the pre-brake era. A loose, rough track with many lines is what Bret Beyer used as he dominated the Pro 505cc class on his Rotax, taking a convincing win in the heat race and final at the AI Muth Memorial Race at the half-mile dirt track in Neillsville, Wisconsin. Pro Sport rider Henry Wiles, chasing advancement points all the way from Michigan, held second place with a fine ride for most of the final, but while closing in on Beyer in the later laps, he threw it away in turn two and ended up ninth. Benjy Carlson and Jeremy DeRuyter came home second and third. Pro Sport rider Brian Jenson from Minnesota suffered a serious head injury in the final, but as of press time he is recovering. With a hoieshot in the final, Beyer rode the rim in turns one and two for the maximum drive onto the back stretch to lead the 15-rider field to the checkers. Beyer took home $650 for his win, and this time the AI Muth traveling . trophy was his to keep. Lee Johnson rode his Rotax to victory in the Open Pro final, over Steve Kasten and John Huntertmark. Southern Wisconsin's Brock Schwarzenbacher took the victory in the Amateur 250cc class, while Madison's Joe Barr rode his KTM to the win in the Amateur 500cc class over last year's victor, Tim Ronnenberg. In the Vet class, Ken Hall of Illinois figured he had won the final when he received the checkered flag. Actually, he placed second; that's how far ahead Minnesota's Gerald Thrune was after a dominating ride on his 600cc Rotax, which he normally just uses to compete. in ice races. "Myoid race leathers shrunk, but a buddy borrowed me his and I didn't want to get them dirty," said an understated Thrune. Lee Johnson's mom bought the one-of-akind AI Muth memorial sweatshirt that's signed by all the riders and auctioned off, with the money going to a local charity designated by the sponsoring Marshfield T&T Riders. Along with this donation, $3 from each T-shirt sale went to the Steel Shoe fund, in a show of support to the riders. Results 250 AM: I. Brock S<:hwanenbacher; 2. Joe Bllrr; 3. Cliff Eckes Jr.; 4. U.S. 51 Fricker Snakes the Win By RACHAEL MOORE WAPELLA, Il, JULY 21 Jake "The Snake" Fricker dominated the aocc Senior class on his Tuf Racing/Parts Unlimited-sponsored Kawasaki at round seven of the lIIini Super Series. In moto one, Fricker, Mason Reich and the other young hopefuls raced down the hill to the first turn. Fricker pulled away with the holeshot and never looked back as he rode the track and led the pack. Josh Durbin and Reich battled for second. Durbin passed Reich on lap two in the new roller-coaster section. In hot pursuit was James Garret, and on lap three he passed Durbin for second. Unable to hold on through the ruts, Garret went down and 'Durbin retook second. Reich pulled back into third. In moto two, Fricker again took the holeshot and led to the checkered flag. This time, Reich had to contend with Travis Crocks. Both Crocks and Garret held off Durbin until lap three, when both riders had some bad luck in the whoops and Durbin took over third. Durbin put the heat on Reich, but Reich held his position to the checkers. Fricker got first overall, followed by Reich (3-2) and Durbin (2-3). In the Over 35 class, Billy Bowman pulled out front in moto one, followed directly by Rusty Ott. Bowman and Ott fought until lap three, when Ott passed Bowman in the whoops. Bowman stayed within striking distance as they went handlebar to handlebar through the rhythm section on the last lap, and in the last turn before the checkers, Ott brake-checked Bowman, forcing him to slow. Ott took first, followed a tire's length behind by Bowman. Bowman was determined to make moto two count and immediately took the lead. Suzuki jockey David Brill and KTM-mounted Rick Grebner battled for second. Brill held Grebner at bay to place second, while Bowman won with a commanding lead for first overall, followed by Brill (3-2) and Ott (1-5). With only 20. points separating the top five 125cc C riders in the lIIini Super Series, every rider was ready to vie for the holeshot. In moto one, more than 20 riders headed down the hill, and Josh Dalpiaz pulled the holeshot, pursued by Scott Burchett and James Bagby - all three were in the top five in the standings, so the battle was on. Dalpiaz pulled away by lap two,
