While Mike raced by himself out front, the Intermediates tried to keep pace. Clovis' Nicolas Baker got great starts in both motos and seemed to be trying exceptionally hard to keep Alessi in his Sights. Maybe he tried a lit· tie too hard, because he ended up going down in the first moto. Nevertheless, he was flying and came back with a solid second place in the last moto. Jeff Alessi was faster than everyone except his brother, but he had plenty of speed to take the victory in the Intermediate class. The Vet classes are normally pretty mellow, but on this particular night they provided some of the wildest action. The Vet Pro class had an unusually high turnout, boasting five riders. Brett Comer and Rick Hollenbeck had been dominating things up to that point in the summer, but they had a few new challengers to deal with. One was John Blair, who came in from Armona, California. The other was Frank Darnley, who was just returning to action after being out for nearly a year due to injuries. In the first moto, Hollenbeck got an incredible start and led the pack into the first tum. He was able to pull a little bit of a lead while the other riders tried to establish a running order. After a few laps, Darnley moved into second and methodically eliminated space between himself and the leader. Just before the finish, he appeared close enough to make a pass for the lead, but a few mistakes held him to second. Comer crossed the line third after a battle with Blair. Hollenbeck got another great start in the second moto but had some trouble in one of the back sections of the track and fell out of contention. Comer and Blair began a duel for the lead, white Frank Darnley struggled to overcome another bad start. Darnley caught the lead duo and started miXing it up. He got Blair first and then Comer in the whoops with a lap to go. All three riders stayed close together to the finish, but Darnley held on for the win. His 2-] finishes gave him the overall class victory. Summer is really for relaxing, and that's what the CMA's Friday night series is really all about. Good friends get together for some By EDDIE GRAVEUNE MADERA, CA, JULY 19 The central California motocross scene takes on a slower pace during the summer. It's too hot to run during the day, so the CMA holds night series throughout the wanner months to keep the truly hard-core riders happy. Everyone at Little Okie Raceway in Madera, California, got a nice surprise on July 19, though, when a gentle breeze picked up and the temperature got downright comfortable. Comfortable racers are fast racers, and the action on the track heated up nicely. Several SOcc riders literally came from all over the state to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of a Friday evening at Okie. In the 50cc (7-8) class, riders from as far away as Morro Bay and Salinas came to compete with the local boys. Landon Sullivan defended the home turf by going 1-1 on his new KTM. Behind him, things were more interesting. Brandon Condley and R.J. Mendez locked homs and went at it all night. Mendez was just able to claim second place in the first moto, but Condley came back and took it in the final. They tied in points, but Condley got the nod for second overall due to his stronger finish in the last race. The CMA circuit has had the opportunity to watch an exciting crop of young 65cc riders develop as they compete with each other on a weekly basis. At the core are youngsters Tyler Bereman, Jerry Cox Jr., Zach Summers and Anthony Deas. Bereman has been especially impressive of late, making huge strides in his riding. He and Cox got going pretty good out in Madera and put on a good show. They even had the older riders hanging on the fence to watch the action. Their high-speed game of chase saw each rider win a moto. Cox won the final and thus the overall, but everyone knew that Bereman would come back. He did. In the 6Scc X class, Bereman got a great start, rode a smart race and took the victory. That's one rivalry that will only get better with time. The 85cc Intermediates were faced with a serious challenge, in the form of Jeff Alessi. Jeff's older brother Mike was there as well, 62 AUGUST 28, 2002' "" U "" • e n e _os By STEVE STASER JENNINGS, FL, JULY 20 Vintage Five points leader Jon Jarvis from Simpsonville, South Carolina, took his Pirelli/Pit Bull-sponsored EX500 Kawasaki to a very hard-fought victory over the current champion in this class, Mark Morrow. The two riders swapped the lead no less than six times in the 103-degree heat. This was WERA Vintage's first visit to the new north Florida facili~ ty, located just inside the Florida border on 1-75. Jarvis grabbed the holeshot on the Vintage Five crowd, but Morrow's MRA Yamaha 400 stayed right on his tailpipe through the first lap; they crossed the line side by side to complete the first circuit. The Kawasaki rider dived into tum one first and got a drive out of two, and then stretched it to a lO-length lead going down the fast doglegs. However, back in the tight, twisty sections, Morrow worked his way back onto Jarvis's rear tire. The new track is unique in that it starts off in a series of fast, Wide-open kinks and then slows down to several tight twists and tums, and then comes a fast sweeper leading onto the front stretch. The duo traded positions for the next two laps but heard a rumbling coming up from behind. It was Julian "Pa-z" Poczatek, on the 650cc Ducati, who was catching the pair. Poczatek just happens to be vice president of operations at this track and a WERA member who knows the track very well. On lap four, as the trio approached turn 11, you could have thrown a blanket over the three of them. Something had to give... and something did. As Pa·z drove in from the outside, he had no room and ran off but kept it on two wheels. Jarvis lost ground in the incident but got thjngs sorted out and was back on the gas, but he lost about 20 lengths to Morrow. By the time he got back up to speed, things looked grim as he crossed the line and starter Chuck Edgeworth was displaying the white flag. Jarvis turned up the wick, put his head down and reeled in the fast Morrow by turn 12 and squeaked by the leader for a twolength Victory. "That had to be my fastest lap of the entire race," said Jarvis of his final lap. Pa-z motocrossed his way back onto the track and still salvaged third. Morrow started the day off with a win in race one's Formula 500 contest, over Quick Bikes' Dick Gruhn and Vintage Specialties' Lynnford Garland. Eric Cook took his second win of the season in Vintage One, over Nathan McManes and Royce Eaton. Doug Bowie rode his Cycle Specialties of Athens Ducati to the win in 350cc GP over Gary Smith's GSA-GP Vintage 305cc Honda. Race two saw Terry Scoggin blitz the entire Vintage Four field on his Scoggin Fabrication 650cc Ducati. The fast Duc pilot took the lead exiting turn two from the start and never looked back. Team Steve-O's Mark Nadelkov North Florida Motorsports Park: John Jarvis is on his way to the Vintage Five win at WERA Vintage's first visit to the new racetrack in Jennings, Florida.
