Madison County Fairgrounds Holstein, Hoff Battle It Out Action Sports Promotions Scoob Not Scared at Action Sports By RUPERT By X. PEU.ETT NELSONVILLE, OH, JULY 20 Clayton "Scoob" Fair was as surprised as anyone; he'd never won at Action Sports' technical and demanding circuit before. But this night would be his night to savor. With a smaller-than~average turnout at this exciting locale, many riders and spectators were lathered in sweat due to the excessive heat and humidity that had infiltrated the area. This evening would see some heated racing on the track, as the riders were trying to go as fast as possible to "unsteam" themselves. Scoob was just on the gas on this night, running in the difficult and speedy Over 25 club. Fair ran hard in both motos, finishing fifth overall with 5-4 results. It was the 250cc C class, though, that would make Scoob a hero: He finished a close second to David Leezer in moto one and then whisked his lightly modified Kawasaki KX250 over the tricky course to take the win in moto two. While Fair took the overall, Leezer's 1 ~3 finishes would give him the runner~up honors. The Pro classes were all about Jason Frecker, who bested Andy Willard's first-moto heroics in both the 125cc and 250cc A classes to take the class overalls. Results P/W 50. 1 J.T. Turner (Yem); 2. The tight, indoor-style track was built during the week inside the fairgrounds arena and gave spectators a good place to watch some great racing. The race was run in a supercross format, with heat races determin~ ing gate pick for the main. In the well·matched 125cc A and 250cc A classes, Holstein ended up with both wins, but they didn't come easily. Hoff seemed very fast all evening but made a couple of key mistakes that ended up costing him a chance at those wins. In the 250cc A heat race, Holstein took second, behind Hoff. Holstein also got second in the 125cc A heat, behind Brandon Kruger, who seemed to have the track dialed in immediately. Kruger came from a third-place start and was the only 125cc rider consistently clearing the large triple on his way to his heatrace win. Hoff kept the pressure on Holstein for second place until the last lap, when he bobbled slightly in the whoops and was forced to settle for third. In the 250cc A main event, Dusty'McDon· aid got a great jump out of the gate to get the early lead. McDonald was unable to hold on, though, as first Hoff and then Holstein made their way around him. Holstein then passed Hoff and pulled away for the win, as Hoff cruised in for second. Hoff got the holeshot in the 125cc A main. Holstein was again right behind him, putting the pressure on. Hoff looked like he would be able to hold Holstein off until he made a slight mistake in a small double~double section, forcing him to go wide in the next comer and hand the lead over to Holstein. Then Holstein pulled away, but this time Hoff didn't give up quite so easily. He charged hard and closed in on the last lap, but it was too little, too late, and Holstein held on for the win. Team Green's Cody Gilmore also showed up to dominate all three of the classes he entered. Giimore won the 125cc B, Schoolboy and Supermini classes. He· was only chal~ lenged once during the evening, as he came into the first tum of the 125cc B main in fifth place. It didn't take long for him to find the front, though, and by the third lap he was comfortably in the lead and pulling away to take the win. Results 50 JR: 1. Doug O~ting; 2. Tiffoni Dings. 50 SR: I. Glen Helen Raceway Park Gonzales Speedy at REM Summer Series By ROCKY HASH SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JULY 20 The second round of Racing Enterprises M.otorsports' No Fear Saturday Motocross Summer Series saw near triple-digit temperatures testing the racer's endurance, which made for tight racing action in many of the classes. The six-round series is being sponsored by No Fear, Wiseco, N-Style, Pro Valve Motocross Race Service, Superfeet, Smith, ARC Levers, VP Racing Fuels, One Industries, Mechanix Wear, Factory R&D, and White Brothers. This week's winner of the raffle for a complete set of No Fear riding gear was Dakota Tedder. In the first moto of Over 40 Intermediate competition, TV personality/helmet painter extraordinaire Jerry Bernardo took the win after he passed early leader Sarp Ramirez at about the halfway point in the contest. Once out front, Bernardo went on to win with three seconds to spare aboard his Yamaha YZ250. Ramirez came across the line in second place on his Yamaha/Honda of Redlands·backed Yamaha YZF, while Gary Gonzales rolled in third. Clay Nettleton was fourth, and Glen Page came in fifth. The start of the second moto was marred by a nasty crash that left first-moto winner Bernardo lying unconscious on the ground in a heap. The race was red·fiagged, and after a few tense moments, Bernardo regained con~ sciousness and finally was able to leave the track unassisted. On the restart, Gonzales took full advantage of Bemardo's absence, as he ripped the holeshot with his mighty CR500AF. With clear track in front of hjm, Gonzales simply checked out and went on to win the race comfortably. Nettleton started in second place and held that position to the flag. Ramirez suffered a poor start, but he charged all the way up to third by the end of the moto. Honda CR250 rider Rudy Chavez took fourth place, while Page again finished up in fifth. On the day, Gonzales' 3~ 1 scores were good for the overall class victory. Ramirez (2·3) was the runner-up, while Nettleton's 4-2 rides were good third place. Chavez (6-4) came in fourth, and fives were wild for Page, as his 5-5 tally was good for fifth place overall. Gregory Jones topped the 14 other 125cc Junior riders on the day, despite not winning a moto. Jones proved the worth of being consis~ tent, as his 2-2 finishes aboard his Kawasaki KX125 earned him the overall class win. Austin Boyd's first-moto win was backed up, with a third-place finish in the second go·~ around, and his 1-3 rides were good for sec~ ond overall. A crash late in the first moto hurt Yamaha 250F rider Ryan Hughes' chances fori the day, but his second-moto win and 8-1 overall scores gamered him third place. John. Minert (7·4) came in fourth, while Austin Humphreys rode his Suzuki to fifth place over· all with a 3·9 tally for the day. i Results 80 BEG: 1. Dakoto Tedder (Kew); 2. Myles Tedder (Yem); 3.1.
