Andy Fortner. who claimed second on his Kawasaki triple with a 3.521-second ride, and Jared McKay was his closest threat for the Alamo MX Park Central Illinois Motorcycle Club HC Wild Wade Fastest, Peters Triples By Boo NORTHROP NEOGA, IL, JULY 20 "Wild Wade" Schultz from Lisbon, Iowa, returned to his fast-time form at the Central Illinois Motorcycle Club hiliclimb on Juiy 20. Riding a Yamaha 750 twin, Schultz blasted over the 90-foot wali in 2.605 seconds to take the 750cc-c1ass win and the Fast Time award. His ride was very impressive, considering his overall fast time, with a 2.812-second time in the 600cc class. Wade has been hurt most of the year and missed half of the climbs, so it was especially good to see him back, riding hard. Schultz was a double winner also, taking the PushTed-c1ass win with a quick 3. I 32-seccnd run on his Harley - another convincing win, as Randy "Buzz" Green was next best with a 3.g77-second time on his Harley. Steve Shafer put his smooth-running Harley over the top in 4.018 seconds for the third spot. Neoga's own Matt Peters had a triple-win evening, his first coming in the 250cc class, where he topped the hill in 3.313 seconds for the win on his Honda, with Jon Creek running second on his Suzuki in 3.482 seconds. Kevin Ryan ran a 3.52g-second time on his KX250 for third, foliowed by Jared McKay and Cody Jenner. Peters' second win came in the 4S0cc class on his KTM 380; his 3.558-second run was fastest. Doug Campbell rode his old Husky 360 for the first time this season (it now belongs to Dave Peirson) and grabbed second place. Peters' third win came in the 600cc Four-Stroke class, where he rode his YZ400F thumper to the win with a 4.469second run, beating his brother-in-law Butch Fetters and his classy KTM 520. McKay and Jacob Tackitt are waging a mini-war of their own in the highly populated and ultracompetitive 600cc class. The 15year-old Tackitt started riding Gayle Jenkins' 1987 CR500 at Ottawa and has been doing exceptionally well. On this evening, he crashed the Honda through the lights in 2.835 seconds to take the class lead. The 16-yearold McKay was up to the challenge, however, as he flew his KX500 over the top in 2.812 seconds to take the class win and set the fast time to that point. Third Round a Charm at Alamo MX BY ROBERT BEAOPRE SPARKS, NV, JULY 20 With the variety of classes and competitors that arrived to contest the third round of the Alamo Summer Night MX Series, it may have been easy to overlook some of the smaller racers. But to do so would certainly be unfair, considering that some of the whoops and ruts on the course could swallow a SOcc machine whole in the event of a mjscue! In the 50cc (4-6) category, Anthony Walsh managed a 1-1 sweep against a sizable class of young racers, all of whom had to face the same course (excluding only the Pro/Intermediate rhythm section) as the majority of the big bikes. This included a challenging whoop section that at times proved exceptionally treacherous for the small wheels of the 50cc machines. Behind Walsh, another KTM rider, Bryson Olson, claimed second, while Kensho Keyes powered his Polini to third. The 50cc racing wasn't limited to the 4-6 class, though, as the Over 7 division took to the class with a comparably large gate of racers. The second mota of this class featured a major shake· up when some exceptionally sticky first-turn mud downed neariy half the field, including some of the top contenders. In fact, KTM-mounted Brian Sjogren found himself in the middle of the early chaos, but he still managed to come back to claim the overall win. Zach Spano placed his KTM in the second spot on the night, while Ty Siminoe, another victim of the second-mota trouble, piloted his KTM to third overall. Moving up in size a bit, some of the best racing of the night occurred in the BOcc Intermediate ranks, as Yamaha-mounted J.L. Bitz squared off against Kawasaki jockey Tyler York. The two exchanged moto wins on the night, with Bitz's 2-1 score edging out York's 1-2 taily after two motos of spirited dicing. York, however, came back to top the Supermini and 60l'c (Over 10) divisions to gain a bit of redemption for himself on the night. The Nevada Motocross Developmentprepped course developed some very nice lines over the course of the night, including Alamo MX Park: Tyler York (114) digs in on his way to the Supermini win at the third round of the Alamo Summer Night MX Series in Sparks, Nevada. Baer won the Sportsman final over John Lewis and Chris Klinefelter, and finished second to Klinefelter in the 250cc A final, and to Raun Wood in the 600cc A final. On the high banks of this quarter-mile oval, a good rhythm-riding 250cc two-stroke rider can keep up with and beat a 500cc Rotax rider. But to beat the fire-breathing fourstrokes, the 250cc rider has to get in front right away. In the Sportsman finai, Baer put his Battlefieid Harley-Davidson/Baer Racing Products Rotax in the lead over Klinefelter, John Lewis (also on a 250), and Raun Wood. Using the outside line, Lewis slipped by Klinefelter starting the second lap and set his sights on Baer. For the next four laps, they ran virtually side by side, with Lewis on the outside. With two iaps to go, Baer finally got a length or two of breathing room and took the win. In the 600cc final, Wood was first out of the gate, with Baer close behind. They quickiy ieft Joey Tyeryar and Doug Reinert to fight for third. While Baer kept ciose, Wood stayed in front the entire way on his Scoots PowerSports/Greenland Masonry Rotax for the win. The 250cc A final had many of the Sportsman participants returning, with Baer riding his uncle's just-completed 450cc Rotax. Klinefelter took the lead from Baer, Wood and Lewis at the start. Wood got by Baer at the end of the third lap and started pressuring Klinefelter, on the DMA Uphoistery/Deer Park Cycle Honda, for the lead until Wood's Honda seized at halfway. After being "attacked" by his bike in a practice crash, resulting in a possibly broken ankle, track owner John Winsett Sr. ignored numerous requests to sit out the night. Mike Keane took the Over 40 lead, with Doug MacDowell, Winsett and John Davis battling for second, and once Winsett got rolling after hand-shifting into gear, they were fighting for third. On the fifth lap, Winsett slipped under Keane for the lead, However, his lead was short-lived, as his foot touched a slightly raised part of the track, reminding him of his ankle, on the sixth lap. Once that wake-up call was given, Winsett circulated to an easy second. Austin Greenland took a pair of easy wins in the 100cc and 85cc (7-11) finals, and Kyle Schlimme did likewise in the 50cc Oil-Injected and 50cc (4-6) classes. While only two riders were contesting the 85cc (12-15), they rode one of the best finals of the night. R. J. Hart took the lead from Joey Parks, and by the end of the opening lap they were running side by side, with Parks on the outside of Hart the entire distance. They crossed the line side by side, with Hart getting the nod by inches. By LEN BREECH Results some ruts that assisted in teaching some of the sand-bred locals a few things about line selection in clay. Three of the four rounds of the series are past now, and the series is set to conclude with a sizable Pro purse for the final round on August 17th, but there wiil likely be little time to revel in the outcome, as the Nevada State Championship, which kicks off on August 2 in Fallon, will already be in fuil swing.
